How to unlock the Blue Belt achievement in Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues - Definitive Guide
I want to preface this by saying I HIGHLY recommend making a checklist of all challenges on all belts that you can refer back to outside the dojo. If you're going for a full completion, you'll end up replaying most levels to get S rank for a collectible anyway, but keeping a reference handy will cut down on additional run throughs.
Karate Challenges are specific goals that, as you complete them, will give you coins towards upgrading your characters. At the end of each level, you'll be taken back to your dojo where you can check on your progress and claim any finished challenges.
If you play through both campaigns on a single save, any progress from the first campaign will transfer over to the second campaign. A few of these Challenges are dojo-specific, so be sure to complete them before moving on to your second playthrough as the first playthrough will lock out after defeating the final story boss. In addition, the descriptions of some Challenges are a little misleading or confusing, so I'll try to provide clarification where needed. The list of challenges for this belt are as follows:
My Streets - Finish 5 Street Goons with Ground Attacks
(Ground Attacks are performed by standing over a downed enemy's torso, pressing to get on top of them, then repeatedly pressing to attack. The game can be very finicky in regards to the window of time and/or hit detection on getting on top of a downed enemy but you'll get the hang of it eventually.
Street Goons are the enemies wearing knit caps and sleeveless shirts with a plaid shirt tied around their waist. Next to the standard Skeletons, they're the easiest enemies in the game to manage.)
I'm Faster - Finish a Speedy Goon with a Running Attack
(Speedy Goons are the blue Street Goons. They do move a bit faster than the standard Goon but they're still not much of a threat. Double tap and hold the left stick to run in any direction, then press either or to perform a running attack. When you start running, you can keep running until you let up off the left stick or hit/get hit by an enemy. Use this to your advantage to make sure you're in position when attempting to hit with your running attack. The running attack must be the kill shot in order for this to count.
Completing this challenge will also unlock its corresponding achievement:)
Halloween Throws - Finish 10 Skeletons with Throw Attacks
(Throw Attacks are performed by grabbing an enemy and then pressing . Some of the throw animations may include a punch or knee, but as long as you only press , it will count as a throw. You can punch an enemy once to stun them in order to grab them easier. The throw has to be the kill shot in order for it to count.
You can also perform a parry on an attacking enemy by standing near them and pressing just before they attack. If they are glowing red during the wind up, you'll grab them and either slam them into the ground a few times or spin throw them off the screen. This does not work on the Big Boned Skeletons.
Lastly, you can perform a throw attack on a downed enemy by standing at their feet and pressing , regardless of whether they are face up or face down. If they're laying at a weird angle, you won't be able to do this, but most of the time, this option to throw will be available.
Skeletons are the most plentiful enemy in the game so you should get this during normal play.)
Bat Off - Finish 3 Baseball Bat Skeletons with a Baseball Bat or similar weapon
(Baseball Bat Skeletons are yellow and always carry a bat. They also always drop their bat once they're defeated, so if there's a few of them on screen, knock one out and use their bat to work on the other one. These enemies frequently use charge attacks and cannot be knocked out of their wind up, but the attack is relatively slow and predictable. If you stand behind them while they attack, you can unload on them the second they stop glowing red and take them out fairly easily.
Any weapon that you can swing will count towards this, including golf clubs and guitars. You'll easily get this as these "wieldable" weapons give you a big advantage with the massive amount of damage they dole out.
Completing this challenge will also unlock the It's Open Season achievement:)
Gravity Defiant - Finish 5 Big-Boned Skeletons while they are in the air
(You shouldn't have any trouble figuring out which skeletons are "big-boned". These portly gentlemen move slower than the regular skeleton enemies and seem to hit a little harder but they're still not too much of a threat.
You will likely earn this through normal play, but there are several Dojo ( and face button) and Personal ( and face button) skills that lift enemies off the ground. I'm not sure if juggling them in the air against the side of the screen counts but as I said previously, you shouldn't have any problems getting this organically if you play through the main story.
Completing this Challenge will unlock its corresponding achievement:)
Nothing to See Here - Throw 5 Security Guards at the Screen
(Security Guards are slow moving with a powerful, yet very predictable wind up attack that you can parry with relative ease. His punch has a longer animation than his kick, but it shouldn't take long to get the timing down for both of them. Stand in front of him and hold after he starts glowing red. You'll grab him and immediately pitch him towards the screen. Do this five times to complete the Challenge.
If you don't have it already, you should also get the Turtles Style achievement while working on this Challenge:)
Ray of Light - Finish Raymond with Regular Attacks
(Raymond is a Security Guard that can only be found near the end of the Mills St level. You can whittle his health down in any way that you like, but the final blow must be either a regular punch or kick ( or ). Since he's the de facto boss of the level, you'll have a continuing stream of other enemies to give you headaches, so pay close attention to Raymond's health so as not to accidentally finish him off with a non-regular attack.)
Gimme a Hug - Finish 5 Hippie Hipsters with Grab Attacks
(The Hippie Hipsters are slow moving female enemies that carry a big sunflower. They have a surprisingly long range attack as well as an area of effect attack that remains active on the ground until the effect dissipates. That being said, they're really not much of a threat except on occasion when part of a larger crowd.
If you kick or punch her once, you can stun her and then walk into her to initiate a grab. Once grabbed, press or repeatedly to do a grab attack. You must finish her while grabbed for the attack to count.
Completing this Challenge will also unlock its corresponding achievement:)
So 2000's - Finish 5 Angry Emos with Flying Kicks
(Angry Emos are green or purple enemies with spiky black hair that do a charged slide kick. They will block the majority any heads-on jump attacks and knock you down in the process. The good news is that you can move north or south in mid-air at any time. The strategy that worked for me was beat them within an inch of their life first. Then, position yourself to be slightly further north or south on the screen than they were, jump kick towards them (hold for maximum height, then press ) to get them to spend their block, then move up or down into them at the last second to connect. This is easier to do if there aren't multiple enemies on screen to back them up but with practice you can pull this off. I'm not sure if the Dojo or Personal Kick Skills work for this as I did all mine with regular jump kicks.)
Empty Cans - Finish 10 Spray Painters with Grab Throws
(Spray Painters are the female enemies on roller skates that attack with spray paint and spinning kicks. Unlike the Halloween Throws Challenge, you will only get progress on this by grabbing her and pressing . Remember to make this easier on yourself by stunning her first with a regular punch or kick, then move into her to grab her. Parry throws and ground throws do not work for this Challenge.)
Better Dojo - Finish 10 Dojo Students with Dojo Skills
(I believe that both the Cobra Kai/Miyagi-Do enemies as well as the Topanga Student enemies work for this, but I got this through normal gameplay. At a certain point, you will start to heavily lean into using Dojo and Personal Skills to make the game more manageable anyway, so you'll likely get this organically as well.
Dojo Skills are performed by holding down and pressing either , , , or . The game will unlock two of the four Dojo skills before the end of the first level. The other two can be purchased from your Dojo's "store" using the coins you get from defeating enemies and completing Challenges.)
Air Raid - Finish 5 Topanga Students with Aerial Kicks
(Topanga Students are the female enemies in the royal blue gis. There are five of them in the first few screens of the All Valley Tournament Arena level and are rather plentiful the rest of the way throughout. Regardless of how the Challenge is worded, there is no difference between a Flying Kick and an Aerial Kick. Beat on her until she has a sliver of life left, then keep jump kicking at her (, then ) until you knock her out. Unlike the Angry Emos, Topanga Students don't block incoming jump kicks, so you can keep jumping all around her until you connect.
FYI - This was one of the Challenges that I had to complete in a single level as it never saved my progress until after I completed it.)
Repairs Required - Finish 10 Chop Shop Guys with Johnny (Cobra Kai)
(Chop Shop Guys are muscular enemies wearing gloves and a large apron. You meet your first one in the Shopping Mall level but they are pretty plentiful from then on out. They have more health than the standard enemies with a variety of grab and kick attacks.
As long as you're swapping Johnny in when these guys are on screen, you should complete this Challenge easily.)
Strike Out - Defeat 3 Baseball Fans with Robby (Miyagi-Do)
(Baseball Fans are female enemies wearing a baseball uniform and attack with a bat. You'll find them on almost every level, so just swap in Robby when you see this and you'll get complete this Challenge in no time.)
Into the Backfield - Finish 5 Football Players with Grab Attacks
(Grab Attacks are performed by grabbing an enemy then repeatedly pressing either or . Football players have several health bars, so you'll want to beat them down to roughly half their last bar or less before grabbing them. Remember to stun them first with a single punch or kick to make them easier to grab. These guys are everywhere, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to knock this out.)
Payback - Finish a Biker with a Bottle or similar weapon
(Bikers are the enemies in all leather with a black helmet with sunglasses. They use projectile chain attacks that stun you for several seconds and leave you open to get railroaded if they're part of a big crowd. They usually have about two bars of health, so you'll want to soften them up a bit first.
Bottles and cans definitely work for this Challenge, but you might be able to get this using any throwing weapon. Bikers show up frequently enough that you should get this with no problem.)
As a side note, I've found some of the challenge counters will either reset to 0 at the end of the level or only show your x/y score from the previous level, then reset when you go into the next one. On my playthroughs this seemed to happen to random challenges on different belts. If you find one the challenges is not progressing, try to fulfill all the requirements for it on a single level. I recommend the longer story progression level (larger icons on the map) as it will give you plenty of cannon fodder to work with.
