You will need a melee weapon for this - enemies can drop them or you can find them on the ground. You can also unlock the Spear to start with on Makya 'Eagle' May by reaching the second boss area while playing him to ensure you have a good weapon. Don't use it much on the way to the 2nd boss though, or it will be too damaged.
The Big Knife upgrade is helpful here to do more melee damage, but not necessary.
You cannot damage the bear with bear traps or you will void the achievement, so find an area to fight him in the arena that doesn't have any. I also tried to make sure he always charged into a wall so he wouldn't go flying into a bear trap off screen.
Attack the bear once or twice with your melee, then role perpendicular to him dodge his attacks. Rinse and repeat.

I made it here with extra life upgrade (6 total hearts), Big Knife upgrade, and the Spear. I took the bear down to empty life and hit it at least 3 more times before I died. Stupid bear never died even with no life showing. So pissed right now
2nd attempt I had 2 extra life upgrades plus extra life from 1st boss for a total of 9 hearts, spear, and big knife upgrade. No way I should have lost, but bear charge hit me through my dodge roll 3 times in a row (3 hearts each). Maybe a little more pissed than before lol
I don't even know how many attempts that took me, but right at the end of stage 2-3 I found a Heavy Hammer. It is a 2-hander, so couldnt carry any other weapons but finally took the bear down with this. Good luck, cause this chievo sucks

Makya 'Eagle' can also start with a tomahawk that does more damage. Not sure how to unlock said loadout but I had it available after rescuing my partner as him. Also, a pitchfork does more damage than the spear should you find one.
During phase two, when the bear starts charging, I recommend keeping your distance and baiting out the charge, then getting a few hits in when the bear is recovering.
Throwing your melee weapon should count as a melee attack as per another achievement.
P.S. The screenshake effect, as seen in the vid, is something you can disable in the settings. Just FYI. :)
