The description is misleading - the game was updated to allow melee for this achievement as well, but the description wasn't changed.
You can unlock the Spear to start with on Makya 'Eagle' May by reaching the second boss area while playing him. Start a new game as him with the spear and just melee everyone on the level to death with

My Tomahawk weapon broke while melee killing enemies. I found a broken bottle and finished a few more off, but it too broke. I killed the last 2 enemies simply using melee with a gun in my hand and the chievo still popped.
