A few times when I've run upto an enemy to melee him he's melee'd me back and sent me into MIA, so the best way i've found to do this is shoot the enemy first so the enemy starts to hunch down in pain and then whack him quick before he recovers from the gun shots, the best level for this is most probably the first level as there's not loads of enemies running at you at any one time.
