You must first reach the bottom (Level 40) of the Earth Mine, the first one accessible in the Cavern. Activate the glowing stone and a cutscene will occur. Return to the entrance for another where you'll be allowed access to the Giants' Village. Cross the moss-covered tree just west of your farm, and after another cutscene (and introductory to enchanting your tools) the achievement should unlock.
Note: The mine elevator is not available on Level 35, as it normally is every five levels. So, it's best to come prepared with consumables for energy and clearing rocks (maybe even with some rope) when attempting to complete the last ten levels!

What does the rope do while in a cavern?
I just got the recipe for it, but not sure how it helps. I haven't made it yet.
I just upgraded my pickaxe to bronze and I've only reached level 15. Is bronze sufficient enough to reach level 40? I don't know where to find silver ore, other than to buy it.
I'll give the first thumbs up as soon as my achievement is scanned by the TA site. I appreciate the note at the end.

The rope will allow you to descend a level in the mine, but it's quite costly to make at 199 stone per rope.
Bronze pickaxe will be fine to reach level 40, your only concerns between 30 and 40 should be bringing food with you to replenish your stamina and having the time to make it to 40 in one go - I did it earlier but was pushing it to try and get it done inside a single in game day. All depends how easily you find the exit on each level.
No need to go buying silver ore - it'll be in the next mine you unlock :)
