Enemies are found in the Caverns, which is the same place you mine for ore: Leave your farm via the north path just west of your farmhouse, go left past the ranch and north next to the "Caverns" sign post.
At first you'll only have access to the Earth Cavern, which has around eight different enemy types in it. The deeper you go, the more enemies you'll find. You'll need to reach floor 40 in this cavern to unlock the Water Cavern, where newer enemies can be found. It unlocked for me after killing the venomous wasp type enemy in the Water Cavern.
