Basically you must reach level 40 in each of the mines as they open. This should pop once you hit level 40 in the Fourth mine (Fire). No real tricks to it as the opening to lower level seems pretty random.
Best bet is to use explosives as you unlock the recipes, but be careful they can hurt you, but they tend to clear multiple rocks each version clearing more and more, plus they do not use energy up to use them.
Upgrading the pickaxe obviously helps as well. I had gold pickaxe when I did this and each rock took 1 hit and the osmium rocks took 4 to break
Edit: In the game settings you can change the game speed, set it to 50% to give yourself a ton more time in the mines. Stamina restoration items will help a lot as well

Lowering the game speed to 50% in settings to drastically slow down the in-game time progression makes this a cake walk. Adding enhancements from Giant village to your pickaxe %chance to one shot rocks/ %chance to not loose energy is extremely helpful. Stocking Stamina restore items is useful as well. Personally, never used explosives even at 100% speed just found no need.

By the time I even heard about lowering the game speed to 50% I had completed already, but yes it is definitely helpful
