How to unlock the Gathering the Magic achievement in Costume Quest 2 - Definitive Guide

You will come across most costumes in the game through story progression and without really having to look hard. The only one you will have trouble with is the Solar System

Once you have them all, just start combat and use their special ability.
I made a video of all the costumes in the game :)

Does it have to be done on your primary character, or anyone in the party?

You can get all of them through story progression except for the Solar System and Wolfman costumes. Those two are both optional quests.

It should also be noted that the Robot costume doesn't have a special (I don't think it can even be used in combat), and the Candy Corn's special can only be used during the fight with the final boss, meaning you can miss this if you don't take the Candy Corn into the final battle. Fortunately, if you didn't you can just reload your save and it will start you right before the final battle.

I got this achievement WITHOUT using Robot (it is stated above that it doesn't have a special) and WITHOUT using Candy Corn's special. I didn't have my Solar System costume fully upgraded either and it still unlocked.

Tive o mesmo problema de Rackie, e o resolvi da mesma form também. Muito obrigado

This seems to be bugged for me. I had no problems with it unlocking on the 360 but for some reason it won't unlock on the Xbox One.

I went through every costume's special one after the other at the end to make sure I hadn't missed any and I watched their animations too as I had been skipping them. I also tried using the pharaoh's special to revive a party member after healing them didn't seem to work either.

Any ideas? I'd rather not have to go through the entire game again just for one achievement.

Edit: I quit & closed the game, reloaded it and used the Black Hole's special and it unlocked. Was just strangely bugged for some reason.

Out of all 12 costumes only 10 of them have specials, the Candy Corn and Personal Floss Robot costumes do not have a special. The Candy Corn costume, as a unique circumstance, has a special called Sparkle that is a scripted part of the final battle as long as you have it equipped, but it is not required for the trophy. You must first have your special meter charged before it becomes available to use in battle. Corvus will teach you about them in the game's combat tutorial as part of the story. You must use all of the following specials at some point during the game.

  • Sweet Justice (Superhero costume)
  • Laughter is the Best Medicine (Clown Costume)
  • Terrordactyl (Pterodactyl costume)
  • Declaration of Destruction (Jefferson costume)
  • Doomstick (Wizard costume)
  • Gift of Life (Pharaoh costume)
  • Night Terrors (Wolfman costume)
  • Mourning Coughy (Ghost costume)
  • Super Sized Combo Meal (Hot Dog costume)
  • NoooooOOOO! (Solar System costume)

Each of the 12 costumes has a powerful special move that can be used in combat. Usually a high damage nuke or a healing ability. You earn some special meter every turn in battles. Once the yellow meter is full, you can press during your turn to use the special for that costume. Special meter is carried over to the next fight, so don't worry if you don't earn enough in a single fight.

Keep note of which ones you've already used, or just equip each costume as you collect them to help you keep track of which ones you've already used.

The majority of costumes are story related so they're hard to miss. Some will require you to locate hidden chests in each area. Any time you reach a new area you can buy a map from Shady's shop that will tell you how many costume pieces you've collected or are missing in that area. The Wolfman and Solar System costumes are likely the only ones you'll have any trouble with. See "Cryptzoologist" and "Cosmonaut" for help with those.
