How to unlock the Hardcorn Mode achievement in Costume Quest 2 - Definitive Guide

The Candy Corn costume is the first (along side the superhero) costume that you encounter in the game. Due to some moments in the game where you are surprised into battle, the simple solution to not voiding this achievement is to keep the candy corn costume on the opposite gender your playing as (the middle character)

The downside to going for this achievement is that it means you will have one less fighter seeing as the candy corn costume does not fight, but it insteads throws "witty" one liners. So you will be downgraded to 2 fighters instead of 3 until the final battle.

Beating the final boss:
The set up I used for this fight was as follows

Costumes:
Upgraded hotdog
upgraded candy corn
Upgraded thomas jefferson

Cards
Sour Dumps - maximizes all 3 special bars
Jelly Beaks - Resets all cards on active deck
Cthulhu Chew - Invunerable for one round

simply use attack on the dentists arms until you destroy his arms twice. attack his main body with your special for one round then use sour dumps. when he uses his build up move where he shows off his teeth use candy corns special to stop him. If you get low on health use Cthulhu chew and then Jelly beaks to reset the cards and rinse and repeat. Overall this isnt hard at all.

The achievement wont pop till a later cut scene but good luck!

At level eleven I used the Hot Dog, Candy Corn and Wizard. No cards needed and everyone survived.

If you enter a fight without the candycorn, end the game by going to the main menus and don't save. I did it and got the chevo

Would it have voided if someone else wore the costume besides the character that wore it at the beginning? because i think i did that.

as long as you have candy corn in your party during a battle it doesnt matter who wears the costume. I personally kept candy corn on the middle character just so i didn't confuse myself.

I don't do the fights with Candy Corn because I don't read the achievement list.

Do I have to start the whole game from the beginning and play through?

I thought this was going to suck, but the Candy Corn isn't completely useless; it works really well as a damage sponge character. It took probably 85% of the hits during my entire playthrough, and is still able to counter attacks for some reason, making it moderately helpful. It's just too bad you can't use the cards during the Corn's turn since they take up a turn. laugh

If you back out of the fight when he's not equipped does that void the achievement?

Does it matter if Candy Corn dies during any fight? Would that void the achievement?

It doesnt matter if Candy Corn dies in a fight if you are aiming to get the achievement.

This had a really delayed unlock for me. Beat the last boss and was sure I had completed correctly, but no unlock. Reloaded last save and had to do a fight or 2 to complete the card use achievement (still with Candy Corn), then beat the boss again, still no unlock, grrr. Had to wait another 7-8 hours for it to thankfully randomly pop while my Xbox wasn't even powered on.

Did anyone else take the achievement to come out? According to me I did all the attacks with the corn and defeated the boss and the achievement did not appear.

Reup: I had that fight with the final boss again and the achievement pop!

I beat the boss on my Series X but it didn't pop, reloaded and tried again but still nothing. So I went back to my One X, beat him a third time and finally it worked. Only thing I can think of is that it doesn't like the quick resume function.

Did not pop on the first xbox (xbox s) after several fights against the main boss. After playing the same savegame on another xbox (xbox one) all three achievements popped.

I did this on my first play through and didn't find it particularly difficult. In fact I don't think I lost a single battle in the entire game. I used Superhero at first, but eventually switched to Thomas Jefferson and the Wizard for their complimentary strengths. Even the end boss wasn't particularly difficult. Candy Corn actually works as a good damage sponge and attack magnet. I'd say probably half the enemy attacks in the whole game went to him.

To add to the above:
I recommend getting this on a second playthrough. It will take around 3-4 hours as you should know where everything is. I avoided most of the secondary missions and opted for a speed run.

This achievement isn't very hard but you will want to get it as quickly as possible. Maximise your party for each section. Each area you are in has certain enemies ie monsters, tech, magic etc so make sure that you change your character each section to match the enemies. Pressing LT and selecting each character tells you there strengths and weaknesses,

Make sure that the middle character is set to Candy Corn, that way it won't change when you need to quickly use a characters ability. Just keep looking for the pointy hat.

Go to Corvus as soon as the mission appears. He improves your combat making it much easier.

When you get to the final boss make sure that you have a healer in your party, my other character was Jefferson as his special is effective. I was only level 8 and it was a struggle compared to my first run. So make sure a healer is in.

The achievement pops as soon as the final boss battle is over.

MISSABLE

Near the start of the game when you first travel to the future, you will be given your first quest in the game titled 'Favor for Everett & Lucy'. This quest involves retrieving 2 costumes from the shed out back. This is story driven and will give you your first 2 costumes in the game, Candy Corn and Superhero. From this point forward you need to make sure you always have the Candy Corn costume equipped to one of your party members for every battle in the game. Doesn't matter who has it equipped as long as it's equipped. Changing who is wearing it won't prevent you from getting the trophy. The person wearing the costume can also die in battle and it still counts. You can also upgrade the costume to Chocolate Candy Corn and it will still count. If at any point in the game you have to swap out the Candy Corn costume for something out of battle related, always make sure you re-equip it before moving on and entering another battle. This should unlock right after beating the final boss.

For this achievement you need to keep the Candy Corn costume equipped for every battle. The Candy Corn costume is given to you as part of the story very early in the game.

What makes this achievement somewhat difficult is the fact that the Candy Corn costume cannot fight, and will make a witty remark for its turn instead of attacking. The only thing its really good for is soaking up enemy damage. The brown paint costume upgrade at Shady's shop will further increase its defense, which will most definitely help.

Another tip to make this easier is to be mindful of weaknesses and resistances. There are icons next to each of your party members and enemies life bars that indicate weaknesses and resistances. Doing a certain type of damage against an enemy weak against it will increase the damage dealt. If they're resistant, they will of course do less damage. Also don't forget to use your Creepy Treat Cards. Some of the more powerful ones can make tough fights super easy.

Remember to find a fountain to heal after every fight. There's no penalty for losing a battle, so just heal up and try again if you lose. If you ever start a fight and notice you don't have the costume equipped, quit to dashboard immediately before the game autosaves.

The trophy is easy to miss!

At the very beginning of the game you will have 2 costumes: a superhero and a candy corn (CandyCorn). Just never take off your corn suit. After the final boss, a trophy will drop.

PS the trophy implies a complication of the game, but in reality it is not that difficult. Corn has a little more life and it aggravates enemies, so there are no difficulties, especially if you use the cards correctly during the battle.
