How to unlock the The Stone Shattered achievement in Crawl - Definitive Guide
Background:
1. Bosses are chosen randomly at the start of each game. You will have no idea which boss is assigned to any particular game until someone challenges it for the first time. There are three bosses, so you only have a 33 percent chance of it being Tezekcal. If it's not the boss you want, all you can do is start over.
2. Any player can challenge the boss after reaching level 10 by heading to the portal room. There is one portal room per floor, and you really can't miss it.
3. If you challenge the boss and lose, it is ok. You will be kicked out of the boss room with minimal health and the game will continue. However, a boss can only be challenged THREE times per game, not PER PLAYER.
In other words, if you challenge and lose, then an AI challenges and loses, then another AI challenges and loses, that is IT. The game is over.
Tips:
When you start the game, win the face-off so you can be human first. if you lose, start over. Being human first is not the hugest deal, but every little advantage helps.
Survive as long as you can, but dont be upset when you die; it's expected.
While you're playing as a monster, you can "cheese" the AI in a way that would not work against a human. The AI will not learn from you like a human would, so you can take advantage of that.
For instance:
Hang back, attacking from afar while the other monsters attack the human. Watch the human's health closely. When it is nearing death, rush in for the last hit. Only the monster who gets the last HIT becomes the human again. By playing this way, you can get the last hit most of the time.
I recommend picking the Teok or Murkan deity at the start of the game. Both of these come with the SPIKE WORM monster. Once you have enough wrath, level up the spike worm monster once, and then its special attack will have you borrow underground, travel across the room, and leave spikes in your wake. If you keep doing this over and over, you can kill a human by yourself without him ever hitting you. Let him get close, travel to other side, let him get close, travel to other side. He will keep falling for it, and keep stepping in your spikes every time.
You should challenge the boss by level 11. If you wait much longer, the AI may challenge the boss instead and win.
BOSS STRATEGY
Tezekcal is a strange golem-like creature lying in the sand. His hands and feet also lay in the sand and can attack you, but the AI is not very smart about it. To damage to the boss, you must first attack the voodoo priest. Once you've damaged the priest enough, the boss's mouth will open and you can attack the boss himself for a few moments. This repeats until the boss is dead.
A human player would realize that you are attacking the voodoo priest, so would keep control of the arms/legs near the priest. But the AI doesn't think like that. They will attack wherever you are. So hang back - away from the priest - and let the AI control the arms/legs close to you. Then rush in and hit the priest a few times, then run away. By the time the AI takes control of the arms/legs near the priest, you have run away.
Keep repeating this strategy. When boss's mouth is open, no one can attack you, so go to town.
After beating the boss, the achievement will unlock.
