You can pet the creatures of Ava only after you have cured them of their infection or after you play the correct music to them on your flute. Each section of the map has its own song/music that needs to be learned before you can "tame" the creatures to pet them. You will learn the song as the first or second quest of each area.
Note that you cannot return to any section of the map except the grasslands once you finish them, meaning you need to pet each animal before completing the section. Also note that animals do not respawn after you send them off planet, meaning you need to pet at least one before rescuing all of them.
There are over a dozen of almost every creature in the game minus a couple of the end game ones. Making sure to pet the first of each animal you come across is the best way to ensure you won't forget one, however you can check each creature in the Avapedia to see if you've pet them or not.
