You can earn Ampoules from doing well in missions and from buying the item backs, you end up with hundreds spare so dont be afraid of just slaping them on (You get the option when setting up a mission, on the same page as Dragon/Wingman Selction.

Ampoules are stat boosters that are single use per mission. You will get plenty of these from drops while playing through a level, you can also buy them from the shop. Equip an ampoule before starting, and play through 10 missions.
