You can enter combat, flee, use items, and attack, as long as you do not kill an enemy in the combat encounter this will not be voided.
For islands with a combat goal (such as hunt a monster) there is always a non-combat option (such as getting a high standard with the locals and asking them to take it out for you.
Does not have to be 5 islands in a row, once you've done this for any five islands it will unlock. That said this is much easier earlier in the campaign.
Can be combined with the Pacifism Ain't Easy achievement:
The Pacifism Ain't Easy achievement in Curious Expedition 2 worth 51 pointsPlay the entire campaign without killing anything in combat
