How to unlock the Shortening of the Way achievement in Curious Expedition 2 - Definitive Guide
Sandworms are most likely to appear on Drylands maps but could also show up on Archipelagos. They can spawn on desert spaces so you could potentially see them after triggering a desert shrine event, but they are rare and so very unlikely.
If you're trying to grind out the achievement, create a save in Paris and then save scum dryland maps. Run around the map quickly to reveal desert spaces to see if you have a sandworm, if not then dashboard and reload.
Note that sandworms are one of the strongest creatures in the game so you will need to have a decent party/gear and play on the lowest difficulty.

For reference, I had a full party (with a mercenary), all level 5-6, on lowest difficulty.
The worm had 400 hp, got 2 attacks per round, hitting upwards of 35 hp and stunning two of my characters each time. It was immune to being stunned and weakened, but could be poisoned, burned & bled.
Tough fight, but managed it with no deaths in 4-5 rounds. Opening round my party did about 100 hp damage and applied 30+ of poison (thank you giant spider!). Each round we dealt less damage due to the stuns, but getting poison applied in that first round really helped.
