After finishing the Guild Rank 4 missions and
, you'll unlock the ability to use an Awakening skill. To use it, charge up 3 full bars of awakening and press L3 to use the skill.

In order to even use an Awakening Skill, you need to progress through the story and do a rank 5 quest in Tetyu Temple called Vessel of Goddess. Once you do this quest, you will be able to use Awakening Skill when the Awakening Gauge reaches 3 (lower left corner). When it hits 3, press 
to activate. It's more efficient to use this when the enemy's guard is broken for massive damage.
