How to unlock the Simulation Winner achievement in Dakar Desert Rally - Definitive Guide
To get this tough achievement you need to complete 2 Simulation races in the Career mode, note that you need to get 1st place back to back, if you place second on any stage before the last you must run the entire event from start again.
1. Dakar Experience 2020,
2. Dakar Experience 2021.
You can tackle this 2 events in whatever vehicle you desire but I recommend only 2: Car or Bike.
Big rigs are too slow but cant really do slow, they have a 140kmh limit but their overdrive will get them to that speed and beyond easily, plus it makes the run even longer timewise. The SxS is another choice but cars just outrank them. We say no to the quads, that's it.
Bike:
Lets start with the Bike, its main pro is that you don't have a speed limit, so you can just pedal to the metal in the straights, downhill and in the clear tracks.
However the cons are severe if you are not a veteran sim driver, first you must manually scroll the road book, just like the real event, you must drive fast, look for where you are going, look at the road book and scroll manually all at the same time.
Secondly you cannot take any abuse, bikes are fragile, so going to fast into a tight curve can and will send you flying costing you time, wheels are brittle with the abuse on bumps or harsh terrain and a tire pop before any checkpoint means auto restart.
Thirdly since you don't have a co-driver (well talk about him later) you can easily miss a turn when your brain goes into auto drive mode on a long stretch of track/traces.
Cars:
Rally cars/trucks are best suited for this events. You can fine tune them to hit specific speeds to avoid hitting the 170kmh speed limit on the leveled stretches. My car recommendations are those that have a 5 or 6 speed rating, not the high speed ones, it easier to go fast on a slower car vs having to constantly monitor your speed and not paying road attention. However I did my runs with a 2021 Toyota Hilux so your milage may vary.
Here is my recommended tune set up:
Front tire toe in: -0.5
Wheel air pressue: 24-25psi
Ride Height: increase to 60mm
Suspension stiffness: lower to 80%
Brake Bias: set to 50%
leave everything else to default.
This tune will make the car hit 158-160kmh in fifth gear, if the car goes into overdrive 6th just quickly brake to avoid going more than 165kmh, this way you avoid those pesky +10sec overspeed penalties.
Driving tips:
Drive as flat out as possible, beware the dune sections, always brake before the crest to avoid a hard fall and breaking the front of the car, before a speed zone (30, 50 or 90) use the compass tracker and when the 600 meter point comes in then brake hard till you are in the 60-80kmh range and then hold the acceleration half way so you don't over speed and get a punishing +2 minutes on your time which spells restart.
Co-Driver:
Lets face it he suuuuucks at giving you directions, he's either too late or too early, mixes up keep right-left with turning right-left all the time. What he is good at is telling you the km amount before a roadbook point of interest, what cap you must focus on open offroad terrain and if you are moving away from where you are supposed to go.
Cheese:
Unlike the IRL event you can restart the tracks over and over thus you start to remember the track layout and most importantly some long stretches where you can go offroad and cut around to the next checkpoint since the AI will always drive the complete route.
Second cheese is that each track has 1 or 2 main Checkpoints, the game will save your progress up to that point meaning that if you suffer a catastrophic event then you just press start and select "Return to Garage", then you can start from the last checkpoint instead of the whole stage.
Third cheese is to save scum, to do this each time you get 1st on a stage let the game save and then exit the game for the cloud save to be overwritten, if you get 2nd on the last stage quickly delete the save file whilst in game to trigger a game close, then just reopen the game and let the save file sync and start from there.
Times to beat:
Lastly here are the times to beat the AI for guarantied 1st place:
Dakar 2020:
Stage 1: sub 33 minutes
Stage 2: sub 28 minutes
Stage 3: sub 41 minutes
Dakar 2021:
Stage 1: sub 48 minutes
Stage 2: sub 50 minutes
Stage 3: sub 38 minutes
Stage 4: sub 43 minutes
If you can beat these times (including any time penalties) you are going to get 1st 100%.
