How to unlock the What a Jerk! achievement in Dance Central - Definitive Guide
This song is harsh. My advice is:
1. Break it down! It's invaluable with this song, it varies a lot, and has a lot going on. Some of the moves have deceiving parts that can easy lose you your combo if you don't nail it perfectly.
2. It's a very leg-heavy song, so wear short shorts/leggins or whatever shows your legs off best. Wearing baggy jogging bottoms, I noticed it struggle to track my legs well.
3.Stick with it. If you keep messing up, or not making the five stars or whatever, just keep at it. You'd be surprised how much leaving it and coming back to it later will effect how well you do.
Here is a video of me playing the song, and just making 5 stars. Just so people can see how the song goes:
Good luck!
Also, your tip 3 is great advice. If you're not getting it, then getting more and more mad and more and more fatigued certainly won't help. Walk away and come back to it tomorrow.
The beat is actually more in sync with the lyrics
# Teach me how to jerk, teach me, teach me how to jerk. #
You'd be surprised of how feeling the wrong beat can put you off. If you need help counting the beat try clicking it out with your hands while playing.
Other than that it's just getting a feel for the moves, so here's a breakdown/explanation of every move in the song. These explanations don't mean anything unless you've seen the routine first.
Low Jerk Lean right for the first two beats, then left for the second two. Keep your arms up and folded infront of you and jerk outwards with your knees on every beat.
Reject You are going to come across a lot of these, so make sure you have this down, it's like reverse cycling with a hop-skip. This basic move has your arms folded infront of your chest while rejecting with your legs. Each 'backpedal' lasts two beats and you start with your right leg first. It's difficult to explain how to do it, so break it down slowly.
Side Jerk left and right Basically Low Jerk but with all four beats on one side.
Note: The first time this comes up you lead with your right leg, the second time, you lead with your left.
Jump Clap Down, clap left, down, clap right. For the down, push your arms down towards the floor in a sort of rowing motion. For the claps, bring your arms together over your head while kicking out your following leg.
Da Push A little bit complicated as the seperate moves are on One, AND, two, three, four. Away, look, up, right, left. Turn away for the first beat with your knees bent, then look using your right hand to pose, then extend your legs for the up. Then push back right, then left with your arms extended outwards.
Reject Pop Basically a Reject while you are turned slightly right, let your left arm drop down and tap your chest with your right hand. The hard part here is going to this directly from the end of Da Push.
Slow Mo Jerk left and right One, two, three, four, AND. Slide, hold, hold, jerk, jerk. Slide to your side with your arms up, hold for two beats, then jerk your arms down and knees in, then up and out, then down and in. I've overcomplicated it with this explanation, but this one is just a matter of timing.
The Stranger One, two, three, AND, four. Right, left, swing, swing, swing. Swing your extended right arm in while raising your knee, then do the same for the other side, then swing your right shoulder in, then left shoulder, then right shoulder. Not complicated, but you need to get the timing right.
Clean Dip 'n' Kicks More in sync with the lyrics:
# Now watch me clean dip!.. You see the clean kicks? #
Arms down, then up on "clean", then down on "dip", then up, then kick right leg, then kick left leg. When kicking your legs push your arms out.
UFO Left leg in front, and then shake your arms up high to how the dancer is doing it.
P.D.G.S. Pause, drop, go, stop. One on each beat. Pose, then bend your knees to drop down, lean back and make a 'boxing' stance, then push your arms out.
Chest Iso After watching a couple people it seems you can do this or you cant. Hands just infront of your chest and keep your hands, legs, and head still, rotating your shoulders while slightly moving up. If you can do it, you'll get an easy Flawless, if you mess up it'll fail you. If you want to play it safe, go into the pose and slowly raise your elbows up, you should end up with a Nice. It's possible to practice, but if you want to get it perfect, practice infront of a mirror.
Sexy Jerk left and right Put your leading leg out infront, beind both knees and pop your leading knee out on every beat. At the same time put both hands on your head, bring them down slowly then clap on the last beat.
Dip It & Stop left and right Dipping, is oddly a very small gallop. Lift your left heel, then your right heel on every beat. At the same time, move your hand that your supposed to be moving up, then put it infront of you for the fourth beat.
Side Reject Turn slightly right, then Reject.
FREESTYLE! I used this part to take a breather and get a sip of water. What? I was thirsty! Up to you what you want to do with it. Freestyle scores you no points, regardless of if you get a Flawless.
Pause Step Reject ; Rejectin left and right Pause, step, backpedal, backpedal. Pose, then drop your leading knee and lift the other one, then fold your arms and reject for six beats. Not easy, make sure you know which leg you are supposed to be moving!
Knee Down Down ; Down Down left and right Knee up and slap it with your hand, then plant it down infront of you, then twist out and in on every other beat. You need to be a bit lower at the end of the move than when you started. There is a slight difference between the two sides. For the right side you should have both arms up and folded, for the left side you only need your left arm up and folded. Either way let your leading elbow guide you when twisting.
Dip It ; Keep Dippin left and right Gallop and lean to right side slightly, then lean to the other side on every beat. You do not need to turn a full 90 away from the camera, 45 is enough. Make sure to raise your arms for the # Hold that # on the fourth beat.
UFO Front ; UFO Back The arm swing is slower than UFO and is on every half beat. Left leg out infront and raise the respective leg needed on the fourth beat. You should be leaning slowly slightly forward slowly for Front and slowly slightly backward for Back.
Finishing Move This is similar to Snake, crouch down then snake right and upward.
If that confused you, which I'm sure it did. Watch ButterflyEdge's video to clear it up. There are a couple of things to point out in her video.
First, and most importantly. She is far away from the camera enough so it could pick up her entire body! If you are too close, it won't detect your limbs, far away and it won't bother tracking you!
Secondly, instead of watching what Mo (the dancer) is doing, watch what she is doing instead. She isn't exaggerating the moves as much as Mo is and is passing the moves, so you don't need to either!
It really is all about getting a feel for the moves and stringing them together, which requires PRACTICE, and patience. It really isn't as daunting as it looks once you Break It Down and take your time. You might get it with very little effort, or maybe a lot of effort, but it is possible!
That help me a lot !!!
I tried maybe 30 times before I got it down.
It's a hard song, but once you get your knee movements down it's all about how much stamina you have and being able to transition from move to move.
Dippin is probably the easiest, so is the UFO.
The "down" part relies on your knees more than your hands I've noticed.
I hope my videos help. First one should be me failing to get 5 stars by about 2,000 points.
Second one is immediately after the first one I tried it again after a brief rest.
This achievement unlocks after getting 5 stars on Teach Me How To Jerk by Audio Push.
A few important tips:
1) The difference between the Slide Jerk and the Low Jerk, aside from the time you spend leaning to each side, is in arm placement as well. The Slide Jerk has your arms as if you were pumping from your chest. The Low Jerk has your arms out practically in front of your body as if you're ready to check someone.
2) The Knee Down Down moves are NOT symmetrical! It's going to be natural to assume they are and to mirror the move, but this will cause you to fail it every time. The first part, using your right arm and leg, firstly has both arm up in front of your chest. Secondly, it starts with your arm moving inward and leg moving outward. The second part, using your left arm and leg, has your right arm at your side, and starts with your arm moving outward and your leg moving inward.
3) The forward-facing Reject always starts with your right leg up and your left leg moving forward
