Each character has a total of 6 hope fragments that you must collect from them in order to fully fill out their report cards.
The first of the 6 is given to you automatically from the story, after that it is up to you to hang out with them during Free Time to collect the rest.
Giving them presents is necessary to collecting more hope fragments (excluding the first 2) and completing report cards. These can be acquired from the MonoMono Yachine at the 1st island beach or the Main Menu, the vending machine in the 1st island supermarket can be used as well.
Also note that it is impossible to collect every single hope fragment in a playthrough. Any fragments you miss can be earned in Island Mode, which is unlocked after finishing the story.
