Once you get to the point where ur about to put the Shantari Crystal on the pedestal save your game in the room beforehand because as soon as you put the crystal in it goes to a cut scene and str8 into the fight.
Obviously dont use any magic so this is going to be alot harder if your a mage but it is do-able. just remember to use block when he uses quick attacks and move out of the way when he uses heavy attacks. and thrash away at him inbetween. only use swords and daggers. arrows are next to useless.
if your low on health run around the other guys standing around while u heal yourself. dont use healing magic. only potions. if you use magic all the other grunts will attack you in which case you wont get the achievement.
this is easiest done as an assasin with the lightning daggers equipped. i did it on hard like that.
it also doesnt matter which difficulity you do this on.

i have once. i just loaded a previous save and it corrected it. i have heard the other people have had to start a new game sometimes though. unfortunatly the game is rather glitchy.

Does it allow you to use rings? Like the regeneration ring?

Just to add to ALLOballo's solution - Remember you can save the game at any point; so if you get him down to half health, get some distance and save the game. I was the mage on hard and used this method to defeat him. Slowly, but surely.
Hardly defeating him loyally, but certainly without magic!

The achievement is only unlocked if you beat the Aratrok without using magic.
I did this on hard with an assassin, with a sword. Head to head Aratrok has just more power and health, and i tried a few times to beat him in a straight fight which I struggled, so essentially I stumbled on the below technique & solution:
- Save before and during the battle (if needed)
- Health potions are ok to use.
- Use a powerful sword only (no magic of course!)
- Keep moving backwards and to the side (Important)
If you hit this constant moving right (keeping away from the edges) he'll just follow you and not attack at all. Leaving you to just continually hack and slash away at him, if you use strong attacks he stops following so just stay with the normal attacks. After a couple of minutes his health will deplete and finally he will be defeated... and pop!
