How to unlock the Abysmal Covenant achievement in DARK SOULS II: Scholar of the First Sin - Definitive Guide
1. Shaded Ruins. After the giant basilisk you will be going towards two ruined buildings (in front of the pass to the boss room), rather than go towards the boss, go to the grassy area just past the buildings, where there will be some planks on the ground. Step on them and you will fall into a room where Grandahl will be sitting. Talk to him to join the covenant.
2. Black Gulch. Go to where the two giant worms are, and drop down to a ledge, there will be a large door. Open this and Grandahl will be inside. You will need the Forgotten Key to open this. Drop down again, below the current ledge, then go into the cave. Inside are two giants, kill them to get the forgotten key. Go back, open the door then talk to him to join the covenant.
3. Drangleic Castle. From the King's Gate bonfire, go into the room with the statues that come to life and the doors. Activate the door in the far left corner by killing the statues next to it. Be warned: a ruin sentinel may be inside. Enter this room and walk to the middle of it, you will drop down a hole, sometimes the ruin sentinel will follow you. You will now be in a small cave with a darkdweller, there will be two conjoining caves, one has a bonfire and the other Grandahl. Talk to him to join the covenant.
Note: you do not need to join for the achievement to pop, you must simply reach the decision window (join: yes/no).
For this trophy, you need to speak to Darkdiver Grandahl at 3 separate locations in the game until he will ask you to join Pilgrims of the Dark. The locations are as follows.
Black Gulch - Part way through the area, 2 giant worm creatures will burst out of the walls. In the middle of where these worms appeared, there will be a ledge to drop down to. You may need to use a torch to see it. Drop down and you will see a door which requires the Forgotten Key (refer to Vendrick for the key location). Enter this door, exhaust his dialogue and he tells you to find him again.
Shaded Ruins - Just before you go up the hill leading to the boss, look to the right to see patches of grass. Walk around and you will fall down a hole and he will be right there. Exhaust his dialogue here too.
Drangleic Castle - At the King's Door bonfire, enter the room with all the stone soldiers and doors to open. You need to enter the door in the far left corner. This will lead you down a hole to another bonfire. Proceed further inside and you will encounter him yet again. Exhaust his dialogue and he will let you join the covenant.
Once you have joined, Grandahl will open a portal to a Dark Chasm of Old. You will be able to access the other dungeons at the locations above, but you must offer a Human Effigy to access these. During the third dungeon you will fight the Darklurker at the end.
PLEASE NOTE, YOU DO NOT NEED TO JOIN A COVENANT TO GET THE ACHIEVEMENT – JUST HAVE THE OPTION TO: You need to talk to Darkdiver Grandahl in three different locations to join the Pilgrims of Dark. They can be done in any order. After the third one he will let you join. He will give you the Abyss Seal and you can then offer an Effigy to open a portal (in each area you found him) leading to the Dark Chasm of Old. You need to get Rank 3 in this covenant for a spell, so offer an Effigy at each place you found him to open a portal, you then have to defeat the phantoms in each area and light the beacon (take Flame Butterflys to light your torch) before falling into the mist at the end. After clearing the third area you will not be returned straight away but instead have to face the Darklurker boss. Be warned that if you die you have to offer ANOTHER effigy to redo the area.
Shaded Ruins - To the right of the ramp that leads up to the scorpion boss you will find a hidden wooden floor to fall through by some trees. He is at the bottom.
Black Gulch - Behind the Forgotten Key Door. Accessed via a hidden ledge near the pools with burrowing worms and hand monsters. Dropping down two levels has a large arch door that is locked. The next ledge down has a tunnel leading to a large room with two faceless giants. Killing both giants yields a Forgotten Key and Soul of a Giant. This key can be used on the previously found door to access a small chamber containing Grandahl.
Drangleic Castle - Behind the Soul-Activated door in the far left of the corner of the large room adjoining the King's Gate Bonfire. The room has two torch bearing giant statues at the end, and a Ruin guardian behind each door. You will need to drop through the floor in the required room to find him.
-In Mirkwood, from the 3rd bonfire, go straight and to the right until you reach the road to the boss between two destroyed turrets. Go to the right one with tall grass, there will be a hole, jumping off we will get to the Altar of Darkness and Grandal.
-In the Black Cleft, on the way to the boss, you will see two giant worms. Jump onto the ledge that is between the worms. Here you will find a door, it is locked for now. Jump even lower and you will find yourself in a location with several giants. After killing them (poison arrows and the fog of darkness spell will help a lot), you will receive the key to that very door. Take the elevator up (opposite the elevator, in the urn, there will be 4 silver talismans) and again go to the locked door, behind it will be the Altar of Darkness and Grandal.
-In Drangleic Castle, not far from the first bonfire, there will be a room with stone statues coming to life and many doors that open with the souls of killed enemies. You need the far left door. There, like behind almost all the doors in this area, there will be a guard, kill him and in the middle of the room the floor will collapse under you, and you will find yourself in a cave. There are no enemies here, so walk boldly (in the re-release you will immediately stumble upon the Dark Stalker). Here you will find Faraam's Set, a bonfire, an Altar of Darkness and Grandal. After talking to him a third time, you will have the opportunity to join the covenant.
