How to unlock the Moonlight Greatsword achievement in DARK SOULS II: Scholar of the First Sin - Definitive Guide
Alternatively: You can simply summon him for Prowling Magus, kill Freya, go back and bonfire ascetic for Prowling Magus again. Clear the way the first time (so Freya ambush is no longer there) then do Prowling Magus so that you have met the conditions (three victories with Benhart alive). After second bonfire ascetic onwards Freya will not ambush and doors will be open, so summon Benhart and run through. Once you have done this talk to him when you next meet him in Drangleic Castle. Thanks to DIRTFATHER for this method.
There are a total of five places that you meet him and can summon him.
He must survive the boss fights for it to count. Therefore, I suggest you clear the path between him and the boss before summoning him. Also, you can use the Redeye ring (purchased from Shalquoir in Majula) to take the heat off him during the boss fight. If he dies then you can either leave (homeward bone/Darksign) or die, then you can try again.
If you miss one of these locations then you are still all right. If you have missed more than one then you may be able to use a bonfire ascetic to redo the location.
Remember that to summon phantoms you must be human, to become human use a human effigy. His summon sign will also not appear if you have the Name-Engraved ring equipped or you have your summon sign down. Thanks to New Legend PL for this.
Locations and Bosses:
1. Shaded Woods/Brightstone Cove Tseldora:
Benhart is first found sitting on the ground just before the entrance to the Shaded Woods, this is in front of the room where Rosabeth is. You must exhaust his dialogue, then unpetrify Rosabeth (See 'Change of Clothes' guide), and finally go back to him and exhaust his new dialogue.
You can then summon him for the Prowling Magus boss fight in Brightstone Cove Tseldora. His summon sign is in a tent in the Royal Campsite (where the first bonfire is).
2. Drangleic Castle:
He is in the room with the bonfire just after fighting Twin Dragonriders. Exhaust his dialogue.
You then need to summon him for the Looking Glass Knight boss. His summon sign will be just behind a pillar in front of the fog gate.
3. Forest of Fallen Giants/Memory of Jeigh: (Requires Ashen Mist Heart)
Benhart is found in front of the Giant Tree that holds the Memory of Orro. This is located just after the Pursuer boss battle area. Exhaust his dialogue. Note: he only appears here once you have talked to him in Drangleic Castle. Furthermore, you must examine the Giant Tree and enter the Memory of Orro, he will be inside and you must exhaust his dialogue.
You now need to summon him in the Memory of Jeigh. To get here, go down the ladder from the Cardinal Tower bonfire in the Forest of Fallen Giants and then across the bridge. Across the bridge is a door (You must have beaten the Last Giant to open this), go through and turn left. You should come to an open area with a King's Gate. Equip the King's Ring and enter, take the bonfire. Continue through outside to see a Giant Tree. Examine the tree to enter the Memory of Jeigh. His summon sign will be just before the stairs to the fog gate.
Note: you cannot kill the enemies to the boss before you summon him, I managed this by running past everyone to the boss, he followed me and the enemies ignored us.
4. Throne of Want/Memory of Orro:
You must talk to him in the same locations as described in the 3rd location for him to appear in the Throne of Want.
His summon sign will be to the left of the fog gate. You must use him for Nashandra, note: Throne Watcher and Throne Defender do not count towards this achievement.
5. Dragon's Rest:
In the Crown of Sunken King (previously dlc) area called the Dragon Sanctum, at the bottom floor. You can summon him to help fight against Elana, the Squalid Queen. His summon sign will be between some rubble at the opposite end of the room from the fog gate. Thanks to CraZy Marty 695 for this info.
Inherit the Items:
You can finally inherit his gear in the Memory of Orro after three of the above. Simply talk to him and he will give you his set and sword.
Note: it appears that if you have already summoned him three times before talking to him outside the Memory of Orro he will give you his gear first. (i.e. completed locations 1, 2, and 5 above). Thanks to vSully for this info.
You earn this achievement by fully progressing Benhart of Jugo's questline. If done properly, when you meet him in the Memory of Orro late in the game, he will give you his equipment and the achievement will pop.
You must talk to Benhart in several locations (always exhaust his dialogue) as you progress through the game and summon him to at least three boss battles which he must survive.
Dialogue Locations
•Between Majula and the Shaded Woods. Talk to him before and after you unpetrify Rosabeth.
•Next to the Central Castle Drangleic Bonfire
•Near the Pursuer's bird nest in the Forest of Fallen Giants
•Near where you start in the Memory of Orro
Summon Locations
•In one of the tents near the Royal Army Campsite bonfire (Boss: Prowling Magus)
•Right outside the Looking Glass Knight fog door (Boss: Looking Glass Knight)
•Near where you start in the Memory of Jeigh (Boss: Giant Lord)
•Right ouside the fog door to the final boss (Boss: Throne Defender/Throne Watcher and Nashandra)
GOOD NEWS! As far as I can tell. this achievement is not missable and can be gotten after defeating the final boss but before moving on to NG+.
I had talked to Benhart at each location as I played through the game, but I had never summoned him. After defeating the final boss I was able to go back and get this achievement rather than waiting to fulfill the requirements in NG+. Here's what I did:
I started by using a bonfire ascetic on the Royal Army Campsite bonfire in Brightstone Cove Tseldora.
WARNING: this resets all enemies and loot in the area and makes the enemies in the area as difficult as they would be in NG+. Furthermore, it carries on through successive playthroughs so in this area in NG+, the enemies will be as strong as they would be in NG++. Be sure that you are willing to accept this permanent change before using a bonfire ascetic!
Benhart's summon sign is inside one of the other tents near the bonfire. I killed all the enemies in the area, then killed the rest of the enemies along the path to the Prowling Magus battle. I then went back and summoned Benhart, then defeated the Prowling Magus with him still alive.
Next, I used a bonfire ascetic on the Central Castle Drangleic bonfire in Drangleic Castle. Benhart's summon sigh appears just before the fog door to the Looking Glass Knight. I summoned Benhart and defeated the Looking Glass Knight with him still alive.
Next, I used a bonfire ascetic on the Place Unbeknownst bonfire in the Forest of Fallen Giants. Just beyond this bonfire is the tree that you interact with to enter the Memory of Jeigh. Benhart's summon sign is in the memory, at the dead end straight ahead from where you start at the bottom of some steps. I summoned Benhart, entered the fog wall, sprinted past the two giants to trigger the huge rolling head, dodged it, then ran back and helped Benhart kill the lone surviving giant. We then killed the Giant Lord with Benhart surviving.
Finally, I went into the Memory of Orro and talked to Benhart, at which point he gave me his equipment and the achievement popped. Before I went back and used bonfire ascetics so I could summon Benhart to the boss battles, he would talk to me in the Memory of Orr but he would not give me his equipment.
Since he never seems to disappear from the Memory of Orro and you can go back and fulfill the requirements at any time before moving on to NG+, this achievement is technically not missable.
NOTE: If you're having trouble keeping Bernhart alive during boss battles, buy the Redeye Ring from Sweet Shalquoir (the cat) in Majula. With this ring equipped, enemies focus almost entirely on you and not on your allies.
2. After defeating Nashandra, you will receive the Ashen Mist Heart.
3. Use the Ashen Mist Heart to enter the memories of the past and obtain the Moonlight Greatsword. To do this, go to the Shrine of Winter in the Dragon's Sanctum and use the Ashen Mist Heart to enter the memory.
4. Once you are in the memory, follow the path until you reach a room with several statues. In this room, you will find the Moonlight Greatsword.
5. Pick up the Moonlight Greatsword and exit the memory. The trophy will be awarded to you when you return to the present.
6. If you want to keep the Moonlight Greatsword in your inventory, you will need to defeat the final boss again and obtain the "The Scholar" ending. This ending can be obtained by defeating the final boss with the Moonlight Greatsword equipped.
This achievement needs some planning to make it as easy as possible so try to do things in the order I list them in order to make life easier on yourself. For more information on specific bosses/locations my walkthrough is here.
You first find Benhart sat on the path leading to the Shaded Woods, before the door blocked by the petrified Rosabeth. Speak to him here until he repeats himself and then un-petrify Rosabeth with a Fragrant Branch of Yore. Then head back to Benhart to speak to him again and learn a gesture, make sure he repeats himself.
Once you get to Brightstone Cove you will find his summon sign in one of the tents in the Royal Army Campsite (same tent that has a suit of armour stood in it) but don’t call him yet. Instead follow the path past the boulders and into the church, kill all the peasants and spiders leading up to the fog gate in there and THEN head back to summon him. This means he’ll have full health for the boss. Take him back there and kill the Prowling Magus and his Congregation – MAKE SURE THAT BENHART SURVIVES THE FIGHT OR IT WILL NOT COUNT. He needs to survive 3 of the 4 available boss fights for you to get his equipment. To make things easier you can buy the Redeye Ring from the cat in Majula for 6,700 souls as this will force the enemies to focus on you rather than the NPC.
After that you will meet him again by the Central Castle bonfire in Drangleic Castle (just before the platform that takes you up to King’s Passage). Speak to him until he repeats himself and then continue onwards. Once you access Kings Passage clear out all of the enemies and find his summon sign to the left of the fog gate leading to the Looking Glass Knight, it helps to summon a second player if you can as the Knight can do severe damage. Ensure he survives the fight and continue.
Once you have the Ashen Mist Heart (from the Ancient Dragon) go back to the birds nest in the Forest of Fallen Giants (just past where The Pursuer fog gate fight was) and speak to him there until he repeats himself. You can now use the Ashen Mist Heart to enter the Memory of Jeigh, his summon sign is straight ahead of you and down some steps (be sure to call him rather than Drummond) and have him help you defeat the Giant Lord.
Once that is done you can speak to him in the Memory of Orro in order to get his equipment and the achievement. If he died on one of the fights you can also summon him at the Throne of Want to assist you with the last boss, then head back to the Memory of Orro afterwards (DO NOT START A NG+ IF YOU ARE DOING THIS) as he will be there permanently. If you missed a fight or he died (if he dies before the boss is dead then you can let it kill you and summon him again, though obviously you need to use an Effigy or Life Protection Ring to be human again) you have two options. Either try again on NG+ OR use a Bonfire Ascetic at the relevant bonfire (Royal Army Campsite, Central Drangleic Castle, Place Unbeknownst, Kings Gate) to make the boss respawn and attempt the fight again. If you do the latter the boss will be tougher and (in some cases) have allies. You can theoretically use this method to get all three boss wins on ONE fight if you feel like it (so defeating the Prowling Magus three times on one playthrough via Ascetic use would be fine). But you still HAVE TO speak to him in the required places and have the wins before talking to him in the Memory of Orro (though he will stay there indefinitely so you can use the Ascetic method at your leisure).
For this trophy, you must exhaust all dialogue with Benhart of Jugo at all possible locations. You must also summon and have him survive at least 3 boss battles in the game. Once you have done this, he will show up in the Memory of Orro and give you his equipment. You can fight same boss 3 times using Bonfire Ascetics and it will count towards the total. If he dies in a fight, you can allow yourself to be killed and retry the boss again. See below for locations and possible boss fight summons.
Majula - Just before heading to the Shaded Woods, you will see Benhart sitting on the ground. Exhaust his dialogue and he will mention a scary statue. Now proceed further and unpretify Rosabeth, return to him, exhaust his dialogue again and his sign Brighstone Cove Tseldora inside one of the tents for the Prowling Magus fight.
Drangleic Castle - Right next to the central castle bonfire. Exhaust his dialogue and you can summon him for the Looking Glass Knight battle. His sign is just outside of the boss fog.
Forest of the Fallen Giants - You will find him sat near the crows nest beyond where you fought the Pursuer. If you have already fought 3 bosses so far using Ascetics like I did, he will give you his equipment here. You can summon him for the Giant Lord boss in the Memory of Jeigh as long as you exhaust his dialogue in Memory of Orro first.
Throne of Want - You can summon Benhart for the Throne Watcher/Defender and Nashandra battles, his sign is just outside the fog.
- Traveling Mage
- Mirror Knight
- Lord of the Giants
- Bad Queen Elana
PY.SY: He must remain alive during the battle.
Brightstone Tseldora Bay: a summoning sign in one of the tents near the first bonfire of the location, inside there is a practice dummy. To summon him, you need to talk to him in Majula. Summoned to fight the Wandering Mage.
Drangleic is a summoning sign to the left of the wall of fog for the Mirror Knight.
Jate's Memory - Down the stairs from Captain Drummond's sign. To summon him, you need to talk to him in the memory of the giant Orro. Summoned to fight the Lord of Giants. You can summon either him or Captain Drummond (you need to summon Benhart to get his set and achievement if you still do not have the required number of bosses killed together).
Throne of Desire - the summoning sign is located to the left of the wall of fog to the Protector and Caretaker of the throne. The summoning sign will also appear before the battle with Nashandra if you defeated the Protector and the Overseer of the Throne without having the giant line with you. The summoning sign will be in the same place where it was before. Also, you can additionally summon Vengarl from Forossa (to do this you need to talk to his head in Mirkwood). In the Throne of Desire, Benhart's summon sign will appear in any case, even if you have never spoken to him in the entire game.
Dragon Sanctuary - for the battle with the Fel Queen Elana. The summoning sign is on the opposite side of the fog.
