How to unlock the Selfless Giver achievement in DARK SOULS II: Scholar of the First Sin - Definitive Guide

This achievement is gained by getting to rank 3 in any of the covenants. This can take a while as most covenants are multiplayer. However, the PvE covenants can be used if you are offline.

The following is a list of how to get to rank 3 in each of the covenants:

Co-op covenants (PvE, PvP):

1. Heirs of the Sun. You must give 30 sunlight medals to the statue in Harvest Valley. These are obtained by helping people beat bosses while you are a gold phantom (sunbro). Do this by placing your White Sign Soapstone whilst in the covenant.

2. Way of the Blue. You must defeat 10 invading phantoms. This can be done quickly by going to a pvp hotspot such as the Iron Bridge.

NPC invaders also count towards the total, making this a fast and easy covenant to get the achievement with by just joining and playing through the game. Some of these NPCs only appear while you are offline, but if you are offline the normal ones should still appear. Thanks to GoGoActionTeam for this information.

Invader covenants (PvP):

3. Brotherhood of Blood. You must have 500 rank points at once. A point is gained by killing a player opponent either in the duelling arenas (Undead Purgatory), or in an invasion (where you are the invader). However, you will lose a point if you lose in the duelling arenas. However, the Scholar of the First Sin edition now makes it so that when you defeat a Blue Sentinel which has been summoned to protect a Way of Blue member, you gain +2 covenant devotion.

4. Blue Sentinels. You must have a total of 500 victory points. These can be gained by invading someone as a blue phantom, winning in the duelling arena (Cathedral of Blue). Alternatively you get +1 devotion when defeating a dark phantom whilst summoned to help by a Way of Blue member.

5. Bell Keepers. You must defeat a total 100 trespassers in Belfry Sol and/or Belfry Luna. Just equip your ring and get killing.

Summoned covenants (PvP):

6. Rat King. You must give the Rat King 35 rat tails. These are obtained by killing players as they attempt to get through either the Grave of Saints or the Doors of Pharros. Equip your ring and stand in one of the areas for summons to occur.

7. Dragon Remnants. You must give 30 dragon scales to Magerold in the Iron Keep. These are earned by defeating a dragonbro in combat, or being summoned and winning the fight as a dragonbro.

PvE covenants:

8. Pilgrims of Dark. You must clear all three of the dungeons (Dark Chasms of Old) which are located in the same places as Darkdiver Grandahl (see abysmal covenant guide), then defeat the boss, Darklurker. Finally talk to Grandahl once Darklurker is defeated.

9. Company of Champions. You must offer 50 awestones to the Victor's Stone (Where you entered the covenant). Awestones are gathered by defeating red phantom invaders and various enemies whilst in the covenant.

I'm unsure then, perhaps your game is bugged. Try getting this achievement in a different covenant, I got mine through the Pilgrims of Dark.

I too am having the issue of not ranking up. I've given 23 and I should be at LEAST Rank 2 but I'm still on 0.

I honestly have no idea why that is happening to you, I gave 30 medals yesterday and got to rank 3 without issue.

I found that, due to the uncertain nature of online play (not connecting, few summoning signs, lag etc etc) that the easiest covenant to rank up in was the Pilgrims of Dark. However, for new players they might find this path tricky due to the tough nature of the dungeons and the Darklurker boss fight.

I got this with Way of Blue as NPC invaders count towards the rank up total. You only need to kill 10 invaders and this is much easier in SotFS as there have been a lot of NPC invaders added in. The achievement popped as I killed the 10th one without even having to go back and talk to Saulden. I should also note that it looks like some of those invaders only show up when your offline.

Worth noting too, if you're going for all achievements you may as well do pilgrims of dark as you need to max devotion to them for a hexe.

So I have reached rank 3 in the Way of the Blue covenant and this didn't unlock. Has this happened to anyone else and if so is there a way to make it unlock?

Just getting the medals wont do anything, you must give them to the statue in Harvest Valley where you joined the Sunbros.

Interact with the statue and there will be an option to 'Offer Sunlight Medal', just do that 30 times and after the 30th you should get a message saying that your devotion has gone up (third time this will happen) and you will receive Sunlight Spear (miracle) as well.

If you have done the above then I would try getting a couple more and do it again, just in case any didn't register or you miscounted.

Quozul's solution is excellent, detailed.... mine is simple.

As soon as you get to Majula, join the Covenant of the Blue - the guy Saulden who will offer that you join is sitting at the foot of the obelisk close to the Majula bonfire.

You don't need to wear the ring or do anything really. Just be a member.

Play the game as a member of this covenant.

Every time a red phantom invades your world and you kill them, it counts towards this achievement. This happens quite often, because the NPC phantoms count, too.

You need to kill 10 red phantoms.

If you visit the cat merchant in Majula, you can check your rank in the covenant. The achievement will unlock once you've reached rank 3.

Thanks, easy method.

I misread my rank: 2 as '2 invaders killed' and wondered why it wasnt increasing shock

Do these include the NPC phantoms that invade throughout the game??

You should update your guide to say that the reason this makes the achievement easy is because there are NPC invasions that periodically happen.

You need to reach Rank 3 with ANY Covenant for this to unlock. You need to get two to Rank 3 for other achievements anyway (as you need the requisite spells) so aim for those. The two are: Heirs of the Sun (once joined the need 30 Sunlight medals for max rank – gained by helped other players beat bosses or being helped in turn by members of this Covenant) and Pilgrims of the Dark (need to find the Darkdiver in three places and then complete the small dungeon in each of them and light the beacon, then defeat the final boss). For a guide to all covenants and requirements go here.

For this trophy, you must gain maximum rank in a single covenant. This will come naturally as you are required to max out Heirs to the Sun and Pilgrims of the Dark for some a miracle and a hex.

For Heirs to the Sun, you can farm sunlight medals from Dark Magic Giants in Harvest Valley, or Falconers in Brightstone Cove Tseldora. The drop rates are extremely low however, so be prepared to spend a good few hours doing this.

A much faster method is to simply lay down your white soapstone outside boss fogs and help 30 players kill bosses. I recommend the Skeleton Lord if you are between 300,000-700,000 SM. I got summoned every few minutes here. It also helps to equip yearn to distract the skeletons to keep the host alive. Another great location is the Smelter Demon. Plenty of players want help to defeat him.

For Pilgrims of the Dark, you must speak to Darkdiver in all of his locations to join the covenant, then complete all 3 of his Dark Chasm of Old dungeons, defeating the Darklurker at the end. See Abysmal Covenant for more info.

The easiest way, in my opinion, is to level up the Covenant of the Azure Road (the man at the obelisk in Majula). For rank 3 you only need to kill 10 phantoms. NPCs or living players make no difference. And it can be done much earlier than the covenant of darkness.

In my opinion, the easiest way to do this is by joining the Heirs of the Sun covenant - for help after calling the player and killing the boss of the location you get a medal of the sun , take 30 pieces and the trophy is yours, you will also receive a Solar Shield (price 10) , Solar Sword (price 20), Miracle Spear of Light (price 30).

The Covenant of the Azure Road is very easy to farm. I completed this achievement in about 40 minutes. Location "Citadel of Aldia" , burn the coal of hostility and run up the wide staircase, where brother Lucatiel from Mirra invades you (at the same time collecting location goodies), knock down your brother, run up the stairs one flight, a cotton mob falls on top of you, knock down him, take 2 coals of enmity and return to the fire, burn the coal of enmity again. Do this 10 times and the trophy is yours.

It doesn't matter which covenant is easier to farm if you're going for platinum. Either way, you will have to bring the “Pilgrims of Darkness” and “Heirs of the Sun” covenants to the maximum level to obtain the “Master of Corruption” and “Master of Miracles” achievements, respectively.

In my opinion, the easiest way is the Pilgrims of Darkness...
As soon as you enter them, clear out 3 dungeons, which the Old Man opens for 1 human figurine (don’t forget to light a torch in each dungeon), and at the exit from the 3rd dungeon (it doesn’t matter in what order you clear them) you will be attacked by a boss - Hiding in the darkness... By killing him you will immediately receive rank 3 in the Pilgrims of Darkness... The dungeons themselves are easy, it will take 20-30 minutes to clean... The boss is certainly not the easiest - but if you wear everything from darkness, then you can very easy to kill
The trophy will be given immediately after killing the boss.

Maximize any covenant. You will get this achievement anyway, because... For other achievements, you will have to pump the covenants of the Pilgrims of Darkness and Heirs of the Sun to the maximum.

And it’s even easier to join the Cote d’Azur at the very beginning. NPC phantoms, of which there are a lot in the re-release, also count towards leveling it up.
