Light the primal bonfire in the Black Gulch

How to unlock the Gulch Bonfire achievement in DARK SOULS II - Definitive Guide

This Achievement is for lighting the primal bonfire located in Black Gulch. This area can be reached by falling into the well in Majula while wearing the Silvercat Ring and going all the way to the bottom, then following the path until you reach The Gutter. You'll know you're there when you reach an area that's incredibly dark and basically requires you to keep a torch lit. Keep going and you'll hit an area that's lit more brightly. That's Black Gulch.

The boss himself is known as The Rotten, and is one of the four Old Ones. Your best bet with this guy is to attack from a distance, as he has a grab attack and a smash attack that can both kill you in one or two hits. Thankfully he's not very fast or smart. Just keep whittling away at him (preferably with a little help from someone else), and you'll take him out. The bonfire is just past him, through a small hole in the wall opposite of which you entered his room.

I missed this one because I didn't see the hole and went back to the nearby bonfire to exit. There is Sublime Bone Dust in the chest if you take the right fork inside the hole. The primal bonfire is in the left fork.

For this trophy you will have to defeat The Rotton boss and light the primal bonfire afterwards. There are 2 ways to access this boss:

1. Acquire the Silver Cat ring and use it to fall down the giant hole in Majula. You will get to a platform that is connected to a tunnel that will take you into the Grave of Saints. Beat this area and you can reach the next area. Or you can wait until you've beaten Earthen Peak / talked to Gilligan and have him come back to Majula and drop a ladder down for 12,000 souls, using the Silver Cat ring again you can drop down to the very bottom of the hole and skip doing the Grave of Saints. Be aware that you will have to beat the Grave of Saints for the Gnawing Covenant trophy anyways though.
2. From there just progress through the Gutter until you reach the Black Gulch.
3. Defeat the Rotten.

This boss is another boss where you can earn a point towards the Lucatiel trophy by summoning her but you will have to find her in this area first. This boss battle is fairly simple as well, just basic melee attacks and fire spells will get the job done. Watch out for a charged sonic boom like attack the Rotten does that will knock you back and deal good damage if you are close.

Story progression – can’t be missed. For this fight you need to defeat The Rotten in the Black Gulch. He is a large enemy that does primarily melee attacks (that can be blocked if you have the Endurance and a good shield) and some dark spells too. You can find a summon sign for Lucatiel in the hidden room to the right side of the chamber before the mist door, plus another sign for an archer near the wall on the left side before the door. Keep your distance if you can, as he has a dangerous grab attack, and bait him into one of his large swings or an overhead smash. Then step in and attack him while he recovers. Watch out for the many flaming pits in this room as they do a lot of damage to you, and none to him. He moves so slowly that you should be able to keep him at arms length and just dash away from him to heal if you need to. Once he dies you can go into the new room to activate the Primal bonfire.

Story trophy. Given after the boss "Rotting" at the end of the Black Cleft location. You can get into it through the "Garbage Garbage" location. The boss is quite nasty, but still not particularly difficult. Try to keep your distance and avoid walking into the fire. Get close and attack him after his weak attacks. Don't risk throwing more than 1-2 hits at a time so that you have some stamina and time to move back to block. Try to hit his hands - you can cut them off and make your life easier.

Quite an interesting boss. Simple if you just need to kill him, and a nuisance if you need to save Lucatiel.

You can call one NPC and Lukatiel to help, but if the NPC archer runs, then Lukatiel will stupidly strive to get into a fight, and this is fraught. I tried both pyromania and magic, but the most efficient and fastest (so that Lukatiel did not have time to die) was Heavenly Thunder. The boss is wide, and Heavenly Thunder hits the area. We run behind the boss and start casting. If you see that the boss does not allow you to cast, then run away a little and he will begin to aggro on Lukatiel. If you see that Lukatiel, to put it mildly, has begun to bend, then we run up to the boss and hit him once, he will switch to you.

Well, if Lucatiel is on the verge of death, then we step into a puddle of fire and die.

I fought him alone, my advice: close combat, wear light equipment (so that the total weight of armor and weapons does not exceed 70% of your carry weight) and then the character will tumble easily, I always tumbled counterclockwise around him, he just didn’t manages to hit you with his vertical strikes from top to bottom.
Weapon: I took a long sword (+ fire) the same one that was in the forest of giants, in the cave with the fire gecko.
