How to unlock the Master of Pyromancy achievement in DARK SOULS II - Definitive Guide

Let this serve as a guide to complement Nyxil's solution, which this it based on. The spreadsheet is great to get a sense of what you're missing without spoiling locations, but for those who want more detailed instructions on how to acquire anything, this is for you.

If anything is wrong or any vital information is missing, please feel free to comment and I will edit the solution. Some locations are missing at the moment, so if you have anything to contribute, please do.

Merchants you will need to find for this achievement:
Rosabeth of Melfia - Petrified at the entrance to the Shaded Woods, reached through a cave in Majula. Use a Fragrant Branch of Yore to bring her back to life (these are found throughout the game). You'll have to go here eventually, so she is technically not missable. Be careful of pulling her lever before she has relocated to Majula, as the enemy horde it summons may end up getting her killed.

Straid of Olaphis - Petrified in a cell in Lost Bastille, up the stairs from the room on the Bastille side of the bridge to Sinner's Rise. He never moves from this location.

Titchy Gren - The leader of the Brotherhood of Blood covenant. To find him, you'll have to cross the long bridge from Huntsman's Copse to the Undead Purgatory. Defeat the boss here (Executioner's Chariot), then you can continue up the stairs to find him. You will need to join the covenant to access his wares.

Chancellor Wellager - Right inside the gates of Castle Drangleic, a mandatory area. Just go up the stairs and he's right there, in ghost form. He never moves from there, but you will need to go to New Game++ to access some of his wares.

Grave Warden Agdayne - In Undead Crypt, shortly after the room with the mages after the first bonfire. When you get near his room, he will warn you to put out any lights you have with you. Do this, or he will turn hostile. As long as you remain in the dark, he will talk and sell things to you.

Now for the actual spells:

Fireball - Bought from Rosabeth (1200 souls).
Dropped by Salamanders in Forest of Fallen Giants. These guys are behind the door just before where you fight the Last Giant. You will need the Iron Key from the first room of the Iron Keep to unlock the door.
Found in No-Man's Wharf. In the chest right after defeating the Flexile Sentry aboard the ghost ship. Just climb the ladder and turn around.

Fire Orb - Bought from Rosabeth (3400 souls).
Dropped by Salamanders in Forest of Fallen Giants. See Fireball for location.

Great Fireball - Dropped by Salamanders in Forest of Fallen Giants. See Fireball for location.
Found in Brightstone Cove Tseldora. After killing the boss of this area, keep going and you'll find a little office of sorts. Kill the enemy here and he will drop a key. Use this to unlock the door back in the big room with spiders hanging from the ceiling, just before the even bigger room with all the spiderwebs. In here, after you kill a bunch of spiders, you'll find a chest with, among other things, this pyromancy.

Great Chaos Fireball - Reward for reaching Rank 3 in Brotherhood of Blood Covenant. This is not recommended as it requires huge amounts of PvP wins.
Bought from Chancellor Wellager in NG++ or later (17400 souls).

Firestorm - Bought from Titchy Gren (4500 souls).
Dropped by Poisonous Horn Beetle in The Gutter. Near the end of The Gutter there is a ladder you can climb up into a cave containing this giant beetle along with several of the smaller poison creatures.
Found in Drangleic Castle. In the really big room with archers on balconies and stairs leading up to them, this is in a chest on one of the balconies/upper floors.

Fire Tempest - Dropped by Guardian Dragon in Dragon Aerie. There are only three of these dragons and they do not respawn, so if you want more, either go into NG+ or use a bonfire ascetic on the area to respawn them.
Found in Shrine of Amana. (ADD LOCATION)

Chaos Storm - Found in Iron Keep. First off, make sure you have the Flash Sweat pyromancy. Attune it, and put on your best fire resistant gear. Now make your way to the big room near the end of the Iron Keep, where you can raise and lower a big central platform into lava. Make sure all the enemies are dead, then lower the platform. Climb to the upper level of the room and you'll see some urns there. These contain water which you'll need to douse yourself in to get some additional fire resistance. Smash them from right to left until you're soaked, then drop down to the middle level, then down to the lower level, on the left side of the room. Go down the stairs here, cast Flash Sweat on yourself, and run over to the chest at the end of the lava rocks. You should at this point be able to resist enough damage to safely retrieve the spell within.

Combustion - Bought from Rosabeth (1500 souls).
Found in Huntsman's Copse. If you go right from the entrance to the Skeleton Lords boss fight and enter the cave, you can find this past a tunnel after the necromancer and skeletons. You can see it from outside, it's the corpse hanging out of a cave opening.

Great Combustion - Bought from Titchy Gren (4800 souls).
Found in Drangleic Castle. Just outside the main gates of the castle, over on the right side in a chest.

Fire Whip - Bought from Titchy Gren (3800 souls).
Dropped by Bell Keeper Phantom in Belfry Sol. Belfry Sol is reached by using a Pharros' Lockstone on the contraption in small room found through a door in the same room of the Iron Keep where Chaos Storm is found. The little black dwarf phantoms here drop pyromancies, although very rarely.

Poison Mist - Bought from Rosabeth (3400 souls).

Toxic Mist - Acquired by trading the soul of the Royal Rat Vanguard with Straid (1500 soul cost). The Vanguard is encountered in the Grave of Saints, reached through the pit in Majula.

Acid Surge - Acquired by trading the soul of the Royal Rat Authority with Straid (1500 soul cost). The Authority is encountered in the Doors of Pharros area which you'll pass through on your way to Brightstone Cove Tseldora, and is fittingly enough best fought using pyromancy.

Lingering Flame - Bought from Straid (6700 souls).
Dropped by Undead Jailer in Lost Bastille. These are the big cloaked guys with halberds/axes.

Flame Swathe - Bought from Straid (9500 souls).
Dropped by Bell Keeper Phantom in Belfry Sol. See Fire Whip for location.

Forbidden Sun - You will have to complete a questline for Royal Sorcerer Navlaan in Aldia's Keep for this. You must be hollow to talk to him, and he is found by entering the keep, going to the end of the ground floor and following the hallway right. Going left leads to a lever that releases Navlaan from his cell, so don't pull it. He will give you three tasks before giving you the spell. First, he wants Gilligan's ladder miniature. At this point in the game, Gilligan is most likely sitting by the pit in Majula, where you can just talk to him and buy the miniature (ADD PRICE). Next, he wants the helm of Cale the cartographer. If you encountered him in Forest of Fallen Giants, he can now be found downstairs in the manor in Majula. To get his helm, all the flames on the his map need to be lit. To achieve this, just light most of the bonfires and kill all the main bosses. If all flames are lit (which also gives you the Curious About Maps achievement), talk to Cale again and he will give you his gear, incuding the helm. Finally, Navlaan wants the staff of Felkin, the Sunset Staff. Felkin, a merchant right before the first bonfire in Huntsman's Copse, will give you the staff if you talk to him with at least 20 intelligence AND 20 faith. Otherwise, you can kill him for the staff (he is required for some hexes though), or find one in Aldia's Keep by killing the mimic outside. After all this, he will give you Forbidden Sun. Also not that you actually do not lose the items, you merely show them to Navlaan.

Flame Weapon - Acquired by trading the Old Witch Soul with Straid (10,000 soul cost). This soul is dropped by the Lost Sinner only in NG+ and onward.

Flash Sweat - Bought from Rosabeth (2300 souls).

Iron Flesh - Bought from Rosabeth (3500 souls).

Warmth - Bought from Agdayne (5200 souls).
Dropped by the rats in Grave of Saints.

Immolation - Found in Belfry Sol. See Fire Whip for how to get there. First, you have to ring the bell in the back left tower to open a gate further on. Climb the ladder in the other tower, go across the rooftop, drop down at the end, and go through the doorway there to find the chest with the pyromancy.

Totally didn't know about Chancellor Wellager selling things on NG+ thanks so much, saved me so much hassle. if only i could upvote more than once.

Please note that you CANNOT use bonfire astetic for Chancellor Wellager as opposed to Majula where you can do that for the armorer to sell the butterfly suit.

"Bought from Chancellor Wellager in NG++ or later (17400 souls)."

That is the better way. As far as I know, reaching rank 3 in the covenant requires 500 PvP wins, and it seems like you lose a win point every time you lose as well. Not very pleasant.

I see, I was being stupid. I thought you meant 500 PvP wins and then it will be available to buy. My bad, please accept my upvote as a means of apology :)

No worries. I should probably add little bullet points or something to separate the methods for getting spells, I'll get to that later.

Should also be noted... On top of 500 wins required for chaos fireball,a loss is -1! Hats off to anyone cheap (skilled..ptf) enough to pull this off...

little tip for getting Chaos storm:
Equip the third dragon ring, Flame Quartz +1 or +2 ring, cast Flash Sweat, break the water urn, use a Red Burr, and an Elizabeth Mushroom. You won't lose any health when getting the spell.

Oh gosh... I dont know what hell is wrong with this game. I mean, I pulled a damn lever and lose the Navlaan's Quest. Now i have to do this in the NG+.

I know that I will have to get in NG ++ for Great Chaos Fireball anyway, but this lever thing still sounding stupid to me.

You cannot upvote a solution if you have submitted one yourself for the same achievement.

You might want to add that this is missable because you can fail Navlaan's questline if you release him.

"Great Chaos Fireball - Reward for reaching Rank 3 in Brotherhood of Blood Covenant. This is not recommended as it requires huge amounts of PvP wins."

Does this mean there is a better way to get it? Or by not recommended do you just mean the achievement isn't recommended because this one is a pain?

I've made a Google Drive spreadsheet checklist for all spells and gestures and the like, telling you where and how they can be purchased, found, or obtained. Here is the link:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ag_8zDTp7F7jdGh...

Hopefully everything's correct! Be warned, you will have to play a ways into New Game + to get this, and if you do not want to join and rank up in Covenants, it will take you until AT LEAST New Game ++. If you don't want to play that far, you will need 500 Tokens of Spite to offer to the Brotherhood of Blood Covenant to reach Rank 3, in order to get Great Chaos Fireball. A Token of Spite is rewarded for every successful multiplayer invasion. Have fun :)

EDIT: Please tell me if you can confirm anything that contradicts or adds to this list, I've found a few that weren't on it in game and added them myself. Also, I am not sure exactly how ranking up in either the Blue Sentinels or the Brotherhood of Blood works, all I know is that this book says 500 Tokens, so if someone really dedicated to those covenants could shed some light, that'd be appreciated too :)

I can confirm it's not NG+++ to buy the spell, it's NG++ and you don't have to kill Looking Glass Knight or Nashandra.

Ah, that's a very good point. I'm really surprised that upping the bonfire intensity would change the soul drops of the bosses, that's amazing. Yeah, if that's a reliable method, that's a great way to obtain those boss spells early. The only problem would be getting to NG ++ to buy the other spells from Chancellor Wellager, since bonfire intensity carries over between playthroughs, so you'd be facing NG++ strength enemies in NG+ in those areas.

Bonfire Ascetics also appear to affect shops as well as enemies and chests. In Majula you can use them to make the armor merchant sell a Butterfly set on an earlier playthrough. So I would assume using a bonfire ascetic on the first bonfire in Drangleic would also change Chancellor Wellagers items for sale. Currently working on making my way back through the game to check whether it actually works or not. Unfortunately you must kill the bosses of the area before you can use ascetics and the boss for his bonfire is the last boss.

Wow, that would be incredible if it does do that. I think I'll try that out myself, I haven't started NG+ yet, and have been waiting to do the Dark Chasm in NG.

Unfortunately it doesn't appear to work. There must be a check other than just NG++ to determine whether or not he sells them.

The check I believe for Challencor Wellager is to beat the Looking Glass Knight and the Endgame boss in NG++ before he further expands his wares. Perhaps if you ascetic those two it'll work?

By Antonysj on 24 Mar 2014 22:58
That's what it says in my guide as well, but Torash said that you only had to get to NG++, so I'm not sure.

Just a question on Wellager: has anyone confrimed if we can use aesthetics to get him to sell the spell before moving onto NG+? That would be so much nicer than going through the game 2 more times lol. If so, which bonfires should we use the aesthetics on and whats the actual requirement?

Me and my friend managed to buy Flame Weapon in the middle of our first ever playthrough. He also bought the hex Numbness with the soul that dropped from the Rotten in intensity 2.

We were doing the achievement for inheriting Lucatiel's gear, and decided to use Bonfire Ascetics to reset The Lost Sinner boss so we could bring Lucatiel to the fight. Once The Lost Sinner was dead on Bonfire intensity 2, it dropped the Old Witches Soul and with that we could buy Flame Weapon from the guy in the cell in Bastille. All Bastille bonfires were on intensity 1.

Could it be that Bonfire Ascetics can be used to circumvent the need to do full NG+ playthroughs for all the spells by just using them on bosses that drop the required souls in NG+ and beyond? Has anyone else done this?

HIGHLY recommend on NG++ (if you are trying to get to the castle asap) is to delete the patch, go offline and glitch the door leading from the shaded woods towards the castle. Saved me a lot of pain and suffering.

You'll need to either purchase or find all pyromancies available in-game. You can purchase them from various merchants in-game and/or find them spread throughout the world, the pryomancies you'll need are

Fireball – Bought from Rosabeth.
Fire Orb – Bought from Rosabeth.
Great Fireball – Found in Brightstone Cove. Just before the primal bonfire you'll get the Brightstone key. Return to the enterance of the spider area and open the locked door.
Great Chaos Fireball – Reach rank 3 in the Brotherhood of Blood (500 successful invasions) or bought from Wellager after getting to Drangleic Castle on NG++
Fire Storm – Bought from Titchy Gren
Fire Tempest – Found in the Shrine of Amana. From the third bonfire, head back towards the second bonfire while staying as far left on the path as you can. You’ll find a treasure chest hidden in the water. A torch makes it easier to see.
Chaos Storm – Found in the Iron Keep. In the room after the Smelter Demon where you can drop platforms into the lava, there is a chest on the far end of a strip of molten rock. You need to equip gear with a lot of fire defense, cast flash sweat, and roll into a vase filled with water nearby. Quickly run down the path in the lava and open the chest.
Combustion – Bought from Rosabeth.
Great Combustion – Bought from Titchy Gren
Fire Whip – Bought from Titchy Gren
Poison Mist – Bought from Rosabeth
Toxic Mist – Bought from Straid. Requires Royal Rat Vanguard soul.
Acid Surge – Bought from Straid. Requires Royal Rat Authority soul.
Lingering Flame – Bought from Straid
Flame Swathe – Bought from Straid.
Forbidden Sun – Reward for completing Navlaan’s 3rd assassination mission.
Flame Weapon – Bought from Straid. Requires the Old Witch Soul, which is dropped by the Lost Sinner in new game plus or after using an ascetic.
Flash Sweat – Bought from Rosabeth
Iron Flesh – Bought from Rosabeth
Warmth – Bought from Agdayne
Immolation – Found at the end of Belfry Sol, accessed by using a Door of Pharos after the Smelter Demon in the Iron Keep

This list has been taken from the strategy guide and like the guide it has one error.

Great Chaos Fireball - You don't need to complete NG++ to get it. As soon as you reach Chancellor Walleger in NG++ you can buy it for 17400 souls. I found this and YouTube videos confirm this wasn't a fluke.

Also you can get through the Shrine of Winter almost straight away in the game due to a jump glitch ( as long as you don't have update 1.03 installed) so you can get there without lighting the primal bonfires.

My bad, I'll add the edit that you just need to get to Drangleic.

As for the Jump glitch, mind posting a link on how to do it?

There are 21 pyromancies in the game. Below is the list of them and where to get them:

- Fireball
Purchasable from Rosabeth of Melfia or find it in No Man's Wharf after the boss fight in a chest or kill the Salamanders at the bottom of the Forest of Fallen Giants.

- Fire Orb
Purchasable from Rosabeth of Melfia or kill the Salamanders at the bottom of the Forest of Fallen Giants.

- Great Fireball
After beating the Duke's Dear Freja and killing the enemies after that to light the bonfire you'll get a key drop, use it to enter the room to the right in the building where the hanging spiders are before you climb the ladder to reach the webbed area down to the boss. This can also be dropped from the Salamanders at the bottom of the Forest of Fallen Giants.

- Great Chaos Fireball
You can purchase this in NG++ upon entering Drangleic Castle from Chancellor Wellager or you can reach rank 3 in the Brotherhood of Blood which requires 500+ PvP wins.

- Firestorm
Purchasable from Titchy Gren. Also dropped by the giant beetle in the Gutter or found in a Chest in Drangleic Castle.

- Fire Tempest
Found in the Shrine of Amana in a chest hidden away in the water. Using Rhoy's Resting Place bonfire head backwards and search the area fully with a torch to find the chest. This spell can also be dropped by one of the 3 dragons in the Dragon Aerie.

- Chaos Storm
Found in the Iron Keep, from the Ironhearth Hall bonfire enter the room where you pull the lever to drop the a platform with enemies into Lava. Make sure you have flash sweat and roll in some jugs of water at the top of the ladder then head back down and jump to the chest in this room and hopefully you'll survive long enough. Having fire resistant rings/armor helps as well as drinking your estus flask by mashing square to recover health as you lose it before/after opening the chest. See the video posted here for a complete walkthrough:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ddixZ_kXEY

- Combustion
Purchasable from Rosabeth of Melfia or found in Huntsman's Copse in the skeleton cave on a corpse that leads to a dead end.

This last scroll (Great Chaos fireball) can actually be bought from the ghost in the castle, the only condition is that he only sells this scroll in NG++. All other scrolls can be bought, found or exchanged for souls in the first playthrough (+1 scroll is exchanged for souls in the second playthrough, this is Flame Weapon).

To complete NG+ and NG++ faster, you can jump over the temple of winter and not collect great souls. You need to remove the patch and put the jump on .

It is worth noting that to buy from the ghost on the stairs in Castle Drangleic, you need NG++ (beat the game 2 times).
Raising the bonfire level with the coal of enmity will not help here.

I personally, having quickly obtained 4 great souls, reached the ghost in 3 hours. All the bosses already in this playthrough do not have time to come to their senses and what is happening. So it's not too stressful.
