How to unlock the Moonlight Greatsword achievement in DARK SOULS II - Definitive Guide

External image

You earn this achievement by fully progressing Benhart of Jugo's questline. If done properly, when you meet him in the Memory of Orro late in the game, he will give you his equipment and the achievement will pop.

You must talk to Benhart in several locations (always exhaust his dialogue) as you progress through the game and summon him to at least three boss battles which he must survive.

Dialogue Locations
•Between Majula and the Shaded Woods. Talk to him before and after you unpetrify Rosabeth.
•Next to the Central Castle Drangleic Bonfire
•Near the Pursuer's bird nest in the Forest of Fallen Giants
•Near where you start in the Memory of Orro

Summon Locations
•In one of the tents near the Royal Army Campsite bonfire (Boss: Prowling Magus)
•Right outside the Looking Glass Knight fog door (Boss: Looking Glass Knight)
•Near where you start in the Memory of Jeigh (Boss: Giant Lord)
•Right ouside the fog door to the final boss (Boss: Throne Defender/Throne Watcher and Nashandra)

GOOD NEWS! As far as I can tell. this achievement is not missable and can be gotten after defeating the final boss but before moving on to NG+.

I had talked to Benhart at each location as I played through the game, but I had never summoned him. After defeating the final boss I was able to go back and get this achievement rather than waiting to fulfill the requirements in NG+. Here's what I did:

I started by using a bonfire ascetic on the Royal Army Campsite bonfire in Brightstone Cove Tseldora.

WARNING: this resets all enemies and loot in the area and makes the enemies in the area as difficult as they would be in NG+. Furthermore, it carries on through successive playthroughs so in this area in NG+, the enemies will be as strong as they would be in NG++. Be sure that you are willing to accept this permanent change before using a bonfire ascetic!

Benhart's summon sign is inside one of the other tents near the bonfire. I killed all the enemies in the area, then killed the rest of the enemies along the path to the Prowling Magus battle. I then went back and summoned Benhart, then defeated the Prowling Magus with him still alive.

Next, I used a bonfire ascetic on the Central Castle Drangleic bonfire in Drangleic Castle. Benhart's summon sigh appears just before the fog door to the Looking Glass Knight. I summoned Benhart and defeated the Looking Glass Knight with him still alive.

Next, I used a bonfire ascetic on the Place Unbeknownst bonfire in the Forest of Fallen Giants. Just beyond this bonfire is the tree that you interact with to enter the Memory of Jeigh. Benhart's summon sign is in the memory, at the dead end straight ahead from where you start at the bottom of some steps. I summoned Benhart, entered the fog wall, sprinted past the two giants to trigger the huge rolling head, dodged it, then ran back and helped Benhart kill the lone surviving giant. We then killed the Giant Lord with Benhart surviving.

Finally, I went into the Memory of Orro and talked to Benhart, at which point he gave me his equipment and the achievement popped. Before I went back and used bonfire ascetics so I could summon Benhart to the boss battles, he would talk to me in the Memory of Orr but he would not give me his equipment.

Since he never seems to disappear from the Memory of Orro and you can go back and fulfill the requirements at any time before moving on to NG+, this achievement is technically not missable.

NOTE: If you're having trouble keeping Bernhart alive during boss battles, buy the Redeye Ring from Sweet Shalquoir (the cat) in Majula. With this ring equipped, enemies focus almost entirely on you and not on your allies.

For some reason his summon isn't appearing in the memory for me. I've summoned for Magus and Looking Glass Knight but his sign won't appear in Jeigh. When I go to Orro he is sat there though.

It wast there at first for me, either. Captain Drummond's was, though. Benhart's eventually just appeared. I don't know what to tell you :(

It's fine! I went back and did put a second Ascetic in Brightstone. So I still killed 3 bosses with him. Went back to Orro and he gave me his equipment. I did Magus x2 and Looking Glass Knight x1 and it worked out fine :)

His summon sign wasn't inside Memory of Jeigh at first. I had to go talk to him inside Memory of Orro then it showed up.

Is it confirmed that the bosses defeated carry across playthroughs? Because that definitely didn't work for me on Benhart. I had to defeat 3 bosses with him in the same playthrough (NG+) even though I definitely did one in NG as well.

I got the achievement now but i think that you must defeat 3 different bosses with him because i killed the priest and those 2 guy's before the final boss then i used the bonfire ascetic by the priest boss and i didn't get the achievement then i killed the final boss with him still alive and i got the achievement

The Throne Guardians do not count, as I already established here earlier. Nashandra does seem to count though.

Lets say he died in one of the battles, if I die on purpose after that and start from the bonfire again can I summon him?

Yes. Or you could homeward bone out. Just don't kill the boss and you can try and many times as it takes.

I've seen that happen when MANvsGAME was fighting the Darklurker of all things. When she split, one half just kinda stood there and did nothing for the entire fight laugh

You should highlight his locations and available summons more. All the info is here, but don't burry it in an essay. It would be nice to just see a block of bullet points summarizing those. The possible bosses especially.

This is a very well put together guide! It was extremely helpful, and I got the achievement pretty easily with it. Thank you so much!

Double check in with Benhard at the memory of Orro before you use a bonfire ascetic at the Place Unbeknownst. I could not find his summon sign anywhere out side the Lord's fog gate; so I defeated the boss alone in the memory of Jeigh. Went on to finish the other bosses to complete the game and touched Benhard's summon sign in the correct places and still could not get his gear. So, I used an ascetic outside the memory of Jeigh and went in and no summon sign! I left without fighting the boss and went back again and entered into the memory of Orro (behind where I fought the Pursuer) to talk to Benhart for the third time and he gave me his things sword! Got the achievement but wasted an ascetic. Weird.

I had only summoned him for Looking Glass Knight and Memory of Jeigh. I had thought that I was going to have to summon him for the Throne of Want, but as I ran through Memory of Orro for a 2nd time so I could get the giant soul Benhart was still sitting at the doorway and he gave me his equipment then as I talked to him a 2nd time in this memory.

I could summon him to Duke's Dear Freja too in Brightstone Cove Tseldora. When you are in front of the fog door, it is behind a pillar well hidden. I just searched the whole last floor and came to find hes summon sign there, so I guess also this boss fight counts towards the achievement. I haven't got it yet, so I can't confirm it yet.

Unless they patched him in for some reason, the NPC summon for Freja is a completely different one. His name escapes me right now, though.

Freja has always been a different summon- Ashen Knight Boyd.

I am so sorry, my mistake. When I summoned him he had that Moonlightsword as the original, so I thought it was him. But I have already summoned him to Prowling Magus and Looking Glass Knight, so I am only missing one last boss. But cheers for wonderful guide!

I can confirm that the Throne Watcher/Defender do NOT count towards his three wins. It might count if you use an ascetic there, but not otherwise. I did that fight with him and left (didn't have the Ashen heart yet, no Nashandra), but I still had to do two Prowling Magus fights to get him to give up his sword, since he survived the Looking Glass Knight fight the first time I did it.

Good news! You come across Benhart in

If you summon him here it counts toward the three kills needed to get his armour. I only killed the Magus Congregation and Looking Glass Knight, summoned him
, met him in Forest of Fallen Giants, exhausted his dialogue and he gave me his gear.

Finally got this one today. I tried to have him (and Vengarl) survive both the throne peeps and Nashandra in one swoop but I died to Nashandra (yes, shocking) so fought her again with Benhart. That fight counted, thank goodness! I also NEVER saw his (or anyone else's) summon sign in the memory either so I have no idea what's going on there.

Funny story: On my NG+ fight with the Giant Lord - My second/third attempt caused him to completely glitch out so he stood there and did nothing! He let me bash his legs in and he toppled over more easily than the pushover that is Dragonrider. Anyone else encounter this (on any other boss as well?)?. I'm not complaining, though laugh.

After unpetrifying Rosabeth of Melfia, speak to him and exhaust all his dialogue, he will now be able to be summoned for 3 boss fights, you will need to summon him for at least 2 of the fights and keep him alive. These are the boss fights and his summon locations:

The Throne Defender/Watcher battle does not count towards the achievement. This is why it takes some people 3 battles with Benhart and others 4.

You can also use Bonfire Ascetic to battle the same boss multiple times and it counts towards the three fights. I got the trophy after using him for three Looking Glass Knight fights. After you have done this the next time you see him you get the trophy, you don't have to get go through all his locations.

To add to on this, Benhart can actually be summoned for 5 boss fights, they are
*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***

I've heard differing stories, as my friend got the equipment from him in Memory of Orro just after 3 boss fights, but when I tried he wouldn't give it to me, I had to summon him for the Giant Lord fight, which he survived through and then he gave it to me.

I researched a bit, some people are getting the equipment after 3 successful summons, and for some it requires 4 so just keep that in mind if you aren't getting the equipment after 3 boss fights.

This is one of the more annoying trophies in the game. What you have to do for this trophy is summon Benhart for at least 3 boss fights and have him survive at least 3 of them. For example you can summon him for 4 boss fights and have him only survive 3 and you can still get this trophy. After you've done that you will have to meet Benhart in every location and exhaust all dialogue options in order for him to finally show up in the Memory of Orro as soon as you enter the Memory of that Giant. Speak with him there and he will give you his equipment and this trophy is yours.

By talking to Benhart in certain spots you will be allowed to summon him for certain fights. Below is the list of where you can talk to him and summon him:

1. Before the petrified Rosabeth, and then again after you've unpetrified her.
- This will allow you to summon him at the Royal Army Campsite bonfire, inside one of the tents. You'll have to go with him through the level until you reach the Prowling Magus and Congregation boss fight.
2. At the Central Castle Drangleic bonfire.
- His summon sign will be right outside the Looking Glass Knight battle
3. Near the crow's nest (after the Pursuer Boss battle in the Forest of Fallen Giants) + Inside the Memory of Orro.
- You will be able to summon him in the Memory of Jeigh down the stairs from where you start.
4. You can also summon him at the Throne Watcher boss battle (and he'll automatically stay for the Nashandra fight if you automatically are put into the final boss fight after you beat the Throne Watchers but he only needs to survive the Throne Watcher battle).

You do not have to meet the NPCs or fight the bosses in the order they were listed. You can also summon them for the same boss in the same playthrough by using Bonfire Ascetics as confirmed by players.

If Benhart dies, you can simply choose to die and redo the boss battle resummoning him or quit the game and reload it and summon him again. If you've already completed a boss battle I would recommend just trying to go for this trophy in NG+ but you ca use the Bonfire Ascetic item on the bonfire closest to the boss to respawn that boss and summon Benhart for that battle again. I do not advise doing that because the bosses will be harder making it harder for Benhart to survive, so only do that if you are extremely overpowered and can kill the boss quickly or have another strong human phantom to help you kill the boss before Benhart is killed.

This achievement needs some planning to make it as easy as possible so try to do things in the order I list them in order to make life easier on yourself. For more information on specific bosses/locations my walkthrough is here.

You first find Benhart sat on the path leading to the Shaded Woods, before the door blocked by the petrified Rosabeth. Speak to him here until he repeats himself and then un-petrify Rosabeth with a Fragrant Branch of Yore. Then head back to Benhart to speak to him again and learn a gesture, make sure he repeats himself.

Once you get to Brightstone Cove you will find his summon sign in one of the tents in the Royal Army Campsite (same tent that has a suit of armor stood in it) but don’t call him yet. Instead follow the path past the boulders and into the church, kill all the peasants and spiders leading up to the fog gate in there and THEN head back to summon him. This means he’ll have full health for the boss. Take him back there and kill the Prowling Magus and his Congregation – MAKE SURE THAT BENHART SURVIVES THE FIGHT OR IT WILL NOT COUNT. He needs to survive 3 of the 4 available boss fights for you to get his equipment. To make things easier you can buy the Redeye Ring from the cat in Majula for 6,700 souls as this will force the enemies to focus on you rather than the NPC.

After that you will meet him again by the Central Castle bonfire in Drangleic Castle (just before the platform that takes you up to King’s Passage). Speak to him until he repeats himself and then continue onwards. Once you access Kings Passage clear out all of the enemies and find his summon sign to the left of the fog gate leading to the Looking Glass Knight, it helps to summon a second player if you can as the Knight can do severe damage. Ensure he survives the fight and continue.

Once you have the Ashen Mist Heart (from the Ancient Dragon) go back to the birds nest in the Forest of Fallen Giants (just past where The Pursuer fog gate fight was) and speak to him there until he repeats himself. You can now use the Ashen Mist Heart to enter the Memory of Jeigh, his summon sign is straight ahead of you and down some steps (be sure to call him rather than Drummond) and have him help you defeat the Giant Lord.

Once that is done you can speak to him in the Memory of Orro in order to get his equipment and the achievement. If he died on one of the fights you can also summon him at the Throne of Want to assist you with the last boss, then head back to the Memory of Orro afterwards (DO NOT START A NG+ IF YOU ARE DOING THIS) as he will be there permanently. If you missed a fight or he died (if he dies before the boss is dead then you can let it kill you and summon him again, though obviously you need to use an Effigy or Life Protection Ring to be human again) you have two options. Either try again on NG+ OR use a Bonfire Ascetic at the relevant bonfire (Royal Army Campsite, Central Drangleic Castle, Place Unbeknownst, Kings Gate) to make the boss respawn and attempt the fight again. If you do the latter the boss will be tougher and (in some cases) have allies. You can theoretically use this method to get all three boss wins on ONE fight if you feel like it (so defeating the Prowling Magus three times on one playthrough via Ascetic use would be fine). But you still HAVE TO speak to him in the required places and have the wins before talking to him in the Memory of Orro (though he will stay there indefinitely so you can use the Ascetic method at your leisure).

An easy way is to burn the embers of hostility in locations where his sign is present, thereby reviving the boss. You can summon him 3 times per 1 boss (for example, in Brightstone, a traveling magician and parishioners) and then he will give you equipment
