How to unlock the Selfless Giver achievement in DARK SOULS II - Definitive Guide

There are a total of 9 Covenants you can join and gain ranks in. Each of them have 3 ranks, and require some sort of offering or action to rank up in. The list of Covenants and requirements is as follows:

(Covenant) - (Offering or event). (Amount for Rank 1, 2, and 3, in that order).

Way of the Blue - Kill invading phantoms. 1, 5, 10.
Company of Champions - Offer Awestones. 10, 25, 50.
Blue Sentinels - Offer Tokens of Fidelity. 50, 150, 500.
Bell Keeper - Kill Belfry Invaders. 10, 30, 100.
Brotherhood of Blood - Offer Tokens of Spite. 50, 150, 500.
Heirs to the Sun - Offer Sunlight Medals. 10, 20 ,30.
Rat King - Offer Rat Tails. 10, 20, 30.
Dragon Remnants - Offer Dragon Scales. 10, 20, 30.
Pilgrims of Dark.

Now obviously the Blue Sentinels and Brotherhood of Blood are completely out, as they have insanely high requirements, according to the guide. No one I've seen has been able to actually confirm how to rank up in those. Company of Champions also makes the entire game harder for the player, so that's probably not a good choice either.

All of the rest are rather easy all around. Bell Keeper is good for anyone who likes PvP and should be self-explanatory once you find the covenant at the beginning of each belfry, Way of the Blue will have you waiting for someone to invade you, either player or NPC invader, and Heirs of the Sun are good for people who like to co-op bosses, and is probably the easiest covenant for anyone with an internet connection and Xbox Live.

Heirs of the Sun

Rat King

Dragon Remnant

However, for people who play offline, and the people who simply don't want to play with others, there is a much better, single-player choice: Pilgrims of Dark. This Covenant requires no offerings to rank up, and instead, you must meet Darkdiver Grandahl in three locations around the world and progress in his questline to reach the full rank. The locations are as follows:

- Behind the door in Black Gulch opened with the Forgotten Key, which can be found in a cave below the door by killing the two Elite Giants.
- After dropping through the false floors in the Shaded Ruins.
- Behind the soul-activated door in the far left corner of the large room next to the King's Gate Bonfire in Drangleic Castle.

Meet him at those three places, and then he'll allow you access into the Dark Chasm of Old, which you need to go into at each of the three places you met him (by offering Human Effigies), clear the areas within, light the torch in each, and then defeat the Darklurker boss. The achievement should unlock after this whole questline.

Also, I should probably add from personal experience: the Dark Chasm of Old SUCKS. If you're not a faith or caster build, you probably shouldn't attempt it. I managed to get through each of the areas as a melee build, but I had to use a soul vessel to respec to a faith build to defeat the Darklurker.

Well I did all those steps and was able to join but it did not max it out. Do I actually have to play through the dark chasm?

ya I got owned by the first enemy in the cark chasm, and it wont let me back in there. so I guess you have one chance to do the dark chasm, unless I messed something up somehow that wont let e back in.

No, you have to offer Darkdiver Grandahl a Human Effigy for him to open up the portal again. He'll appear at whatever portal you go to now. I got owned too :/

I'd like to mention you need to max out the Heirs to the Sun covenant anyways to get a Miracle you can't get anywhere else. You also need to max out the Pilgrims of the Dark to get some unique Hexes, including the Darklurker's Soul to trade for a Hex.

If you're just going after this achievement and you have online capability, I'd say just go for Heirs of the Sun. You do have to do it if you want to 1000 pt the game, though.

I did a one dark chasm under drangleic castle and got rank one when I spoke to the dark dude, then I did the one in the hole in shaded woods and spoke to him again but he didn't give me rank two. Is this normal? Should I bother doing the third one or has something gone wrong?

I don't think I've ever gotten them close enough together hit both. I'll keep trying, but I only have a finite number of times I can do it since it take 1 human effigy to reopen the portal every time. Unless there is a place I'm unaware of that sells infinite numbers of them. This is the final boss that I have left in the game to my knowledge. It would kind of suck if I'm left in a situation where it's impossible to encounter.

I actually got this by complete accident whilst in the Way of the Blue. Turns out AI invaders count. Freeing that guy in Ardias Keep causes him to invade you in multiple areas, which helps in that regard (He can be hard to kill though)

Tip for the Darklurker boss: Try use pyromancy spells and those amber/twilight herbs that restores spell uses. This boss is extremely weak againts fire ! I personally totally owned this boss for using only a Great Fireball, Flame Swathe and Firestorm pyromancy's.

If you want to go him/her againts with any melee combination, try use a fire-based weapons (black knight weapons for example) or charcoal pine resin. Ohh and dont forget to use any armor that has a good dark and fire resistance (this boss also uses a fire-based attack by shooting 3 large fireballs).

Also dont worry about those human effigy's. You can use Ring of Life Protection that saves a humanity and souls every time when you die. Downside is that this ring breaks every time you die but can be repaired by every blacksmith for only 3000 souls !

@Janenzki: you still need a human effigy to re-enter the chasm every time you get killed.

Thought I should mention that for offline players, Way of the Blue would actually be another option. Scripted invasion count as well so as long as you can kill 10, you should be golden. Though I'm unsure if Dark Phantoms that are just roaming the level would count as invaders. Haven't found much to confirm or deny it.

You shoudln't advise the the Dark Chasm as a means to get this achievement. It's stupidly difficult and out of your way to complete the game.

It's not that bad, especially for faith and caster builds. I could make a video guide if you really wanted it.

By Nyxil on 17 Aug 2014 21:32
I am a faith build and I still found it overly difficult; plus needing a human effigy each time was making it worse. It's handy to know this is an option of course but I really wouldn't do it unless I absolutely had to.

Plus I'm guessing 99% of the people are going to want to complete the game in which case - it is a totally unnecessary headache.

By Sneaky G Wizard on 18 Aug 2014 07:44
Actually, you need to get to Rank 3 in Pilgrims of Dark to get the Climax Hex, which is required for another achievement. There's no other way to get that hex as far as I know.

I stand corrected then redface

But I genuinely think that the solution for this achievement should include clear information about the covenants you'll have to complete for the 100% anyway. You may as well work on one of those, seeing as Pilgrims of Dark is one anyway you wouldn't even need to change the guide.

+1 toast

Any hints on how to beat the Darklurker? I have a tough enough time getting her down to 2/3 health, but at that point she splits in two! And those homing dark blast shots are deadly!

By Level 75 Noob on 27 Mar 2014 18:04
Try to use a shield with the highest Dark resistance you can find, as all of her attacks can be blocked. If you're a melee character, try and stay as close to her as possible and bait her melee attacks to give you a chance to strike. If you're a ranged or a mage character, just go for the highest damage spells you can use, use a Soul Vessel to respec if needed. When she splits in two, it's not like Pinwheel from DkS 1, meaning doing damage to either of the Darklurkers will do damage overall. So if you can get them close together and hit them with either wild weapon swings or an AoE spell, you can damage them both at the same time, doing double the damage. That's all I got :P

I believe that Heirs of the Sun its the easiest covenant to max out.

To find this covenant, from the bonfire "The Mines" in Harvest Valley, turn right and then right again and you will enter a area with two giants in a "poison fog" and a guy with a hammer on a bridge. Take out that guy (don't worry about the giants, they will not attack). Turn left after the small bridge, watch out for the big guy and eventually you will be in a cave with a broken statue that you can kneel to. This is the Heirs of the Sun covenant. Enter it and now you will get a Sunlight Medal every time you help other players with bosses.

Relax ( ;) ) for a while, enjoy this fantastic game and eventually you will reach Drangleic Castle. This is the place to farm Sunlight medals.

In this area there is a boss (or two bosses you will meet at the same time in fact) - The Dragonrider duo. They are located right after you speak to the queen who ends up saying "...". (I still don't know if anything happens if I attack her, lol)

I believe that the Dragonrider duo is one of the easiest bosses, despite being two at the same time. Also, there is a bonfire right after the fight named "Central Castle Drangleic" which is great.

Leave a white sign soapstone outside the boss area, wait for someone to summon you and you are ready to go. Being three players against the Dragonriders is a walk in the park almost every time. With some skilled players, some luck and patience you can farm 30 Sunlight medals in a couple of hours. You will also get a lot of souls. I think I ended up with about ~150 000 souls.

Offer 30 Sunlight medals to the covenant and pop goes the achivement!

Good luck!

Great guide. I was SL200+ in NG+ and put the soapstone down in these two places.. Within 90mins I had 10 medals. (I'd already offered 10 earlier)
Also, might be worth noting, that you can actually farm Sunlight Medals. They are a rare drop from the Giants with Hollows on their back in Harvest Valley. Also, the very first enemies in Things Betwixt on NG+ have a chance to drop them too. Covetous Gold Serpent Ring is recommended when farming. Along with any other items that boost item discovery (Jesters Cap, Prisoners Hood, Rusted Coin etc.) I got my last 5 Medals this way in about 15 minutes.

Hope that helps anyone struggling to get summoned. Again, great guide! +1

The easiest covenant to max out id say would have to be the sunlight covenant. They are located just past the 2nd bonfire in harvest valley. When you get to the upper room with the poison pots and the fat dude make a left amd go into the cave. This is easiest because it just requires you to help people in coop. Each time you beat an area boss you get a sunlight medal. I'm not sure of the exact number, its quite a few, but every so often just go and offer your medals to the altar in the cave.

edit: not as easy as I thought but still probably the easiest. It takes 10 medals for the first reward. 20 for the 2nd. And 30 for the last reward and max devotion.

it's easiest for noobs, but it stilll time consuming - defeat 30 bosses with somebody who can fail. 30 player kills is 5 times faster.

I just farm garbage bosses like the covetus fat worm or the last sinner knight guy. Super easy for the amount of effort needed. If you farm fat worm, the sunlight altar is practically right arpund the corner.

Leave your sign by Prowling Magus and Congregation in Brightstone Cove. Boss fight takes about 30 seconds with fire weapon or pyromancy

I just went with the rotten for a while. I'm only about half way done with that cov tho. I agree with the guy above.the abyss cov is fastest. Its literally 4-8 enemies in each area then the boss. Cakewalk. Dark lurker is easy for mage classes like myself but can be really cheap tho. Still even with a few deaths its 2-3 hrs max. Can be done in like less than an hr tho.

You can also farm Sunlight Medals if you're having trouble being summoned/summoning. The dark magic giants with hollows on them in Harvest Valley drop them. As well as the first enemies in Things Betwixt in NG+ It's recommended to use Covetous Gold Serpent Ring and Jesters Cap. Anything that boosts item discovery as they'rea relatively rare drop.

I earned this naturally by playing through the game to the end. Check in every so often with Crestfallen Sauldren; on the steps east of the far fire. As you defeat the NPC invaders you will progress naturally through the covenant. I killed 8 NPC chapter spirits, two of whom spawned multiple times which pushed me way past the 10 kills needed for the achievement. Unsure if online player dark spirit kills count (those that appear red upon invasion).

If you have joined other covenants, no matter. Join the Way of the Blue when speaking to him and get your rewards. The achievement after you report to Sauldren and receive your final reward.

Mega Spoiler*****Alert****Below

A tip: wait to release Navlaan until after you have completed the game. Then pop back into Drangleic Castle where you spoke to the Queen; Aldia's keep before the dragon boss site; The Gutter near the ladder leading to Havel's armor behind the stone door. The ladder is the first LOWER platform to the left of the spawn fire in upper gutter. You may not see it until you take out the two torch carriers there. Navlaan spirit also invades at the fire behind the King door in Forest of Fallen Giants: on the way from a memory near the end of the game nearby and below the cardinal tower fire. The N dark spirit also spawns in Tseldora Cove at the bridge over the stone spikes on the way to the boss fight area. And he spawns at the bridge just prior to the Dragon Shrine.

I found it easier to defeat him without interference from other enemies. Hit him rapidly with soul arrows and he cannot cast his dark spells. My Int was 67 at the time, SL over 170. High cast speed 186 with buffs. Good Luck!

When your total reaches ten kills, he rewards you with a ring and the achievement unlocks.

The two covenants that are the fastest to reach maximum rank are either Heirs of the Sun or Way of Blue.

Heirs of the Sun

If you join Heirs of the Sun, you are awarded a Sunlight Medal anytime you have successful (jolly!) co-operation. You can achieve that through either of the White Sign Soapstones. Using the standard one will require you to defeat the boss without either you or the host dying; however if you use the small stone all you have to do is keep you and the host alive until you reach the time / kill limit.

An alternate way of getting Sunlight Medals is to summon people who are already in Heirs of the Sun; their summon signs are a much brighter orange and their characters are orange / gold as opposed to the standard white. For each covenant member you summon and are successful with, you will be awarded. This route is helpful early on as accessing this covenant isn't until a significant way through the game, and you do not need to be a member to be awarded these medals. You will need 30 medals in order to reach Rank 3.

Way of Blue

This is the first covenant you can join in the game. You rank up in this covenant by defeating invaders (I'm not sure if NPC invaders count towards rank, but I'm guessing they don't). You will need to defeat 10 invaders to reach Rank 3.

---

From my personal experience, I chose the Heirs of the Sun route as it is very easy to be summoned at every boss relatively frequently (especially as you progress further into the game). Put your sign down 2-3 times at each boss and you should have 30 medals in no time. These are the bosses I had the easiest time to be summoned for:

You need to reach level 3 in the Pilgrims of Dark covenant to get a Hex for the "Learn all Hexes" trophy, so maxing out in a different covenant is just making more work for yourself (assuming you're looking to plat the game).

Gave the solution a thumbs down because it doesn't mention how to get the medals offline (and there is a way). Also, v_Sully is incorrect as you also need sunlight medals to get a miracle for the all miracles trophy.

You need to reach Rank 3 with ANY Covenant for this to unlock. You need to get two to Rank 3 for other achievements anyway (as you need the requisite spells) so aim for those. The two are: Heirs of the Sun (once joined you need 30 Sunlight medals for max rank – gained by helped other players beat bosses or being helped in turn by members of this Covenant) and Pilgrims of the Dark (need to find the Darkdiver in three places and then complete the small dungeon in each of them and light the beacon, then defeat the final boss). For a guide to all covenants and requirements go here.

If you're planning on fully completing the game you'll get this one along the way. To acquire all the Miracles you'll need to reach Rank 3 with the Heirs of the Sun Covenant by offering 30 Sunlight Medals to the Altar of Sunlight to obtain the Sunlight Spear. You'll also need to reach Rank 3 with the Pilgrims of Dark Covenant by completing the 3 instanced areas and defeating the Darklurker to get Profound Still and then trading the Darklurker's soul to Straid of Olpahis to obtain Lifedrain Patch.

If you are going for platinum you have to max out 2 covenants (Heirs to the Sun and Pilgrims of Dark) in order to get their rank 3 miracle and hex.

Maxing out Pilgrims of Dark just requires you to beat all 3 of Darkdiver's dungeons (Dark Chasm of Old). Be aware that you will have to offer a Human Effigy to Darkdiver every time you want to attempt a dungeon so it's best to make sure you do not die too much when attempting the dungeons. Also be sure to bring Flame Butterflies in order to light the giant torches in the dungeons. Getting this to rank 3 will get you the Climax hex and Darklurker's Soul which is required for Lifedrain Patch hex (trading to Straid). I recommend you watch the 3 videos below for how I beat the dungeons so you do not get caught off guard and end up wasting Effigies:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojAah8gP_q8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o9IUBOWEIc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXTe9823dBo

Maxing out Heirs to the Sun just means being in the Sunlight Covenant and acquiring 30 Sunlight Medals and giving them as offerings to the Sunlight Shrine. Below is how you can get the Sunlight Medals (taken from the Dark Souls II Wiki):

- Random from from the giants ridden by hollows in the Harvest Valley area
- Random Drop From Falconers in starting area (NG+)
- Can be obtained by helping another player beat a boss while in the Heirs of the Sun covenant
- Can be obtained by defeating a boss with a player who is in the Heirs of the Sun Covenant
- Can be obtained by phantom after summoning time limit expires (Phantom Duty Fulfilled)

the offline option is the covenant of the Pilgrims of Darkness, their 3rd rank is to go through 3 dungeons where you need to light a fire and kill all the mobs, after the boss and rank 3 is ready...

For me, Azure turned out to be easy (in Majula on the stele), I joined from the very beginning of the game and as I progressed it worked out on its own, I didn’t even think about it and forgot that I was in some kind of covenant. Of course, you always have to be online.

Can be easily completed in the Azure Path covenant, simply summon and defeat 10 red phantoms, easiest on the bridge in the Iron Citadel, players' favorite place for PVP

The simplest option is the Azure Path covenant, you can join it in Majula from the character Sad Solden, he will ask you a couple of questions to which we answer - yes, after which you join the covenant and receive the Blue Ring (increases your health by 5% of yours) like this A player from the Blue Guardians covenant can come to your aid in the event of a red phantom invasion.
To get the maximum rank in the coven you will need to kill 10 red phantoms, the easiest way is to burn one ember of hostility at the first bonfire in the Tomb of Saints location, then run from the second bonfire to the stairs, simultaneously clearing out the rats, when the inscription appears (IMPORTANT! YOU MUST BE OFFLINE!) Your world has been invaded by the same spirit: Roy the explorer, we go upstairs and kill him, after which we repeat a similar procedure 10 times. And we return to Solden after:
1st killed phantom, gives a ring of bloody bite (increases resistance to bleeding), raises us to rank 1 in the covenant.
The 5th killed phantom gives the spell silence (magic) and increases to the second rank.
And on the 10th killed phantom, it gives us a ring with a blue tear stone (at 30% and below health, it increases physical defense by 30%), and raises us to the maximum rank 3.
