How to unlock the Dancer of the Boreal Valley achievement in DARK SOULS III - Definitive Guide
The Dancer can be fought when you meet and kill Emma in the cathedral in the High Wall of Lothric. It's not recommended unless you are highly skilled as the Dancer is one of the more difficult bosses in the game.
The other intended way to defeat the first three Lords of Cinder (Abyss Watchers, Aldritch, Yhorm). When you do this, you will teleported to the High Wall cathedral, where you can start the fight.
The Fight
The Dancer has a weakness to Lightning, so bring weapons buffed with Lightning. All her attacks do high damage and require almost-perfect dodging. Don't bother trying to attack the Dancer from a distance as she will close in on you instantly. There are three attacks in particular to watch for:
Grab Only used in Phase One, the Dancer will perform a slow sweeping grab with her empty hand. Getting caught by this will almost certainly kill you so either roll backwards or towards the grab, as rolling sideways will get you caught.
AoE Explosion The Dancer will raise her hand and press it into the ground. This will cause a fiery explosion around her. While she is immobile during the attack, keep some distance unless you want to tank the explosion.
Fiery side attack She'll stick the sword into the ground and move it around in a semi circle, which will cause the line to explode. Move around her when she does this and hit her when she's done spinning. If you don't feel up to the risk, move away.
When she reaches 50% hp, she will gain access to another sword and proceed to spin horizontally multiple times before stopping and doing 2 more rapid spins. While it may seem counter-intuitive, attack her while she pulls the second sword out and stick to her rear as she spins around. You'll be completely safe and untouched, just remember to roll when she does the rapid spins. From here, it's just a matter of dodging her fast combos and finishing her off.
As a side note, you are able to summon the Sword Master for help if you have defeated him outside Firelink Shrine and have not killed the Vordt of the Boreal Valley. Because you need to kill Vordt to progress past High Wall, you will have to kill Emma to take this road which, again, I do not recommend.
Found in the cathedral at the end of the High Wall of Lothric.
After killing three Lords of Cinder, Emma will teleport the player to her, giving them the Basin of Vows and the means to summon this boss. Alternatively, kill Emma and take the basin from her corpse to reach Lothric Castle earlier.
Summons
If you have not yet killed Vordt of the Boreal Valley, you can summon the Sword Master (only if the player has defeated the Sword Master outside Firelink Shrine). This can only be done by killing Emma.
Strategies
Melee
Strategy 1: The first stage of the fight, the dancer will only have one flaming sword. The best strategy here is to stay as close as you can to her back. She only has a handful of moves that can reach the whole way around. One of the ones that can reach you is her grab attack which is properly devastating. Get in hits where you can and drop her health to around 60% (unconfirmed amount, somewhere between 60-50%) and she will pull out the second, dark sword. Immediately after she does this, she will do an attack where she spins in multiple angled circles, followed by a horizontal spin. After this attack, she is vulnerable for a brief amount of time in which you should attack. After you get your hits in, stay as far away as possible to avoid the rest of her attacks. Eventually she will do this spinning attack again, at which point you attack in the recovery period. It is slow but it is the safest method for those struggling to dodge her attacks.
The columns in the throne room can be used to effectively stop her advances and to make her spin in place during her spin attack in phase 2. By having no lock-on and moving around the column she can be rotated and kept in place for a very long time. However her swords hit through the column so it's best not to hug them. A good way to bait her spin attack is to run between columns on opposite sides, she will try to cover the distance really fast and will spin in one place once she reaches the column.
The boss can be bled, so bleed weapons such as katanas, the Morningstar, etc., are very useful during this fight.
Magic
Strategy 1: Since the Dancer can be bled, the miracle Gnaw is extremely useful. The boss is not very aggressive in her advancing; all mage builds should have a fairly easy time regardless. The Dancer is so weak to Dark Magic like Black Fire Orb, Gnaw or Dark Edge.
Found at the High Wall of Lothric.
After you kill three Lords of Cinder (Abyss Watchers, Aldritch, Yhorm) you will be teleported back to Emma. Speak to her. If you then approach the altar behind her this fight will trigger so be ready. The boss has a number of curving attacks but in the first phase she is quite slow and predictable, roll through her strikes and be ready to keep rolling in case of combos.
Get her health down to halfway and she pulls out a second sword and becomes more deadly. Get away from her when this happens as she instantly goes into a long combo that is hard to block. Wait for her to finish and get some hits in. She can now leave trails of fire as she moves to be careful of that, roll through her attacks to the back or side and get a hit in then get out of dodge.
NOTE: You can access this fight far earlier when you meet Emma – by killing her and swiping her key item, which lets you get to Lothric Castle much sooner if you fancy it.
A rather inconvenient boss, the attacks are sweeping, especially in the second stage, and they hit very hard. There is only one piece of advice: stay back and call a partner, or better yet two.
Drops - the soul.
