How to unlock the Master of Infusion achievement in DARK SOULS III - Definitive Guide

External image

Weapon infusions are done by Andre the Blacksmith in Firelink Shrine. Infusions modify the properties of a weapon and are intended to tailor a weapon to complement your character's stats for better performance.

In order to earn this achievement, you'll need to find the four coals that "unlock" certain infusions and return them to Andre in Firelink Shrine. You'll also need to find at least one of each of the 15 different infusion gems. Then you simply need to have Andre apply each infusion to a weapon, which can be done to a single weapon (infusions don't stack, FWIW) or across multiple weapons.

Refined, Raw, and Fire infusions are available by default.

The Farron Coal unlocks Heavy, Sharp, and Poison infusions.
From the Halfway Fortress bonfire, drop down from the ledges on the right side and follow along the right wall and enter a doorway at the end. Turn left and you will see a Black Knight. The coal is on a corpse behind him.
External image

The Sage's Coal unlocks Crystal, Blessed, and Deep infusions.
From the Farron Keep bonfire. head to the left and follow the wall around until you reach a small building guarded by a Darkwraith. The coal is on a corpse in this building.
External image

The Giant's Coal unlocks Lightning, Simple, and Chaos infusions.
From the Anor Londo bonfire. head up the steps and then out to the left. You will reach a room where the Giant Blacksmith from Dark Souls 1 is dead. He is holding the coal.
External image

The Profaned Coal unlocks Dark, Blood, and Hollow infusions.
From the Ithiryll Dungeon bonfire, work your way down to the lowest level of the dungeon that is patrolled by several warden enemies. The coal is on a corpse in a cell directly opposite the room with two large rats.

Specific Gem Locations
You will likely find many of these as random enemy drops, from Crystal lizards, or in various locations as you progress through the game. These are some specific locations should you be missing any.

Refined
Dropped by a Blue Knight just before the Dancer of the Boreal Valley boss room in High Wall of Lothric (where you first meet Emma just before killing Vordt).

Raw
From the Dragon Barracks bonfire, drop from the bridge then work your way around to the left and up some steps. Enter the building and the gem will be on a corpse on the right.

Fire
Obtained by defeating the Fire Demon in the Undead Settlement as part of the Siegward questline.

Heavy
Given by Hawkwood in Firelink after several interactions.

Sharp
On a corpse on a ledge below the first bridge in the Catacombs of Carthus (by an illusory wall that leads to a tome).

Poison
In Farron Keep near the Keep Ruins bonfire you'll find three large tree enemies gathered around an item- a poison gem.

Crystal
Dropped by a crystal lizard in the grey stone structure near the Crystal Sage area.

Blessed
On a corpse in the rafters area of the Cathedral of the Deep.

Deep
From the Cleansing Chapel bonfire, take the shortcut door that leads to the lift that takes you just outside the huge room with the giants. Take the second hallway on the right and the gem is on a corpse at the end.

Lightning
On a corpse at the base of a monument one level below and in front of Pontiff Sulyvahn's boss door.

Simple
Dropped by a crystal lizard on the platform above the Pontiff Sulyvahn bonfire.

Chaos
Dropped by a crystal lizard in the Demon Ruins found by where you drop in from Smouldering Lake.

Dark
Dropped by the giant rolling skeleton ball near the Catacombs of Carthus Bonfire that breaks when a specific enemy is killed (a skeleton wearing a black witch hat on the level above).

Blood
From the Church of Yorska bonfire, proceed through a dark room full of semi-invisible enemies. Once outside, look to the area on the right and the gem is on a corpse at the base of a tree.

Hollow
From the Farron Keep Perimeter bonfire, look for a hole in the wall that leads to a ledge where the gem is on a corpse.

Do you have to have one weapon with each infusion, or can you just cycle through infusing one weapon with each of the infusions?

You just have to have done the infusions. You could use the same weapon. I definitely did not have all 15 different types in my inventory at once.

This achievement is definitely bugged. I had all 15 gems to get the achievement in one go. 15 infused weapons later and nothing..

It's not just this achievement. Almost everyone has at least one random achievement that doesn't unlock properly in this game. For me, it was Master of Sorceries. It shows as 100%/Locked in the game hub but I was still able to unlock The Dark Soul. It's something with Xbox LIVE, not with the game because the game thinks I have all the achievements. All we can do is wait and hope it gets sorted out.

I'm not sure. Somebody would have to test it. I'm not sure if the trigger is performing each infusion or possessing a weapon with each infusion.

I've met the requirements for this achievement on 3 separate NG+ runs as well as doing a new character and it still isn't unlocking. I tried the 15 dagger method, infusing one weapon with all 15 gems, putting them in the storage box, dropping them and picking them back up. Nothing works. Please if I'm missing something or if anyone has found a workaround, I'd love to hear it.

EDIT* - I finally was able to unlock this achievement today (11/01/23). I accidentally picked up a blessed shield but discarded it immediately. I didn't pick up any other infused weapons for this run. Any time I quit the game, I also did a hard quit so Quick Resume wouldn't happen. I infused weapons as I got the coal's and gems required. This popped when I picked up the Profaned Coal and returned it and infused the last three weapons (dark, blood, hollow) in one go.

I guess I'm next on this list of the people that the achievement didn't pop up for... It's definitely bugged. Not the only one bugged either. I +10 a lothric knight greatsword and didn't get the reinforcement achievement, then +10 a lothric straight sword and then got it... so I guess some of them you gotta do more than once? Lame :/

My best guess is that there is confusion with the game with having done one of the infusions. I would try them all a 2nd time, If that didn't work, I'd do it on a new character.

And if I started a new character, I'd do them all at once. But beforehand, once I had everything ready, I'd quit and close the game to ensure a cloud save, then open back up and do them all back to back and if the achievement didn't pop, I'd open the dashboard and delete the local save through the DS3 game icon, which would close the game and force a cloud save reload upon relaunching, after which you'd get a chance to try the infusions again 'for the first time.'

I had this glitch my first playthrough. On my new game + run I skipped picking up any infused weapons after I finished my second run I put all my infused weapons in storage. I bought 15 daggers and infused about 7 daggers before the achievement popped. Hope this helps out

After farming the Ghrus for the Watchdogs Covenant, I ended up having around 20 Rotten Ghru Daggers. I went through and made 15 different daggers 1 of each infusion one after the other. The achievement popped on the 15th gem (Hollow in my case).

I'm not sure why it would count towards this, but I've also upgraded a weapon to +10 and used both Twinkling Titanite and Titanite Scale to upgrade weapons as well, so I've used all of the materials at some point. I have not used a Shriving Stone, however. Probably not even connected, but hey, you never know... :D

Yup its bugged for me also. I just found my last gem I needed. The dark gem. Went to infuse a weapon with that. And no achievement popped. There is known achievements that are not popping. I have a friend that her wolnir kill didn't grant a achievement pop. So I have this one bugged. A quantum break one bugged. And 5 achievements on Fallout 4. That are stuck at 100% Unlocking. This is starting to get old.

Well I got it finally.
I tried everything I mean everything !!!
Started new char and ran through the game picking up one gem and all coals did the trick.

Few tips for others:

I would NOT get the deep axe from the mimic. OR the darkwraiths dark swords they drop. I think this makes the game think you have the infusion.

Once you get a certain gem use it right away ! Mark it off your list.

Using same weapons aka daggers is fine.

If you did pick up or wait to infuse later and it don’t pop try again if not. You will need a new char.

This is only from my experience

I also had trouble unlocking this achievement on my first character. Tried in, NG, NG+1 and NG+2 but nothing would work. Eventually had to start a new character, and took me about 5 hours to collect all 15 gems and 4 coals, and thank god it worked.

I think Psychotic Mr L and Subzero323 both gave some great advice. One more thing I would add is more of a general observation: I've had I think 5 achievements in this game (2 covenant, 2 boss, and this one) not unlock properly the first time, and had to get them on NG+ or later. I noticed that for all 5 of these achievements that didn't unlock had something in common: they all happened an hour plus into my gaming session.

So maybe this game has some issue where the longer you play it, the more likely something in the code is messing up. I think this is a FromSoftware games issue as I've had similar issues on dark souls remastered and DS2 SotFS as well.

My advice would be before you know you're about to get an achievement, save the game and quit out, then re-launch it. When I did this, the achievements always popped. (And I suppose if it didn't, you can delete the local save and retry)

Got to unlock on the first try these are things I did from reading everyone’s tips and doing research on it

1) did the dagger method, bought all 15 of them from the merchant in firelink shrine, and did all of them in one go without leaving the infusion screen.

2) made sure I didn’t have any other infused weapons in my inventory, and didn’t infuse any weapons prior to going for the achievement. If I did have any infused weapons in my inventory, I discarded them, I didn’t save them in the item box, or leave them, I just discarded them.

3) I made sure to quit out and save in firelink shrine, then on the dashboard quit the game completely. Then I hard reset the Xbox.

4) made sure I had the Xbox app opened the entire time, and with DS3 achievements opened during all of these steps.

5) started the game back up and immediately went for the achievement and didn’t do anything else.

6) The achievement didn’t pop until I did all 15 infusions and completely backed out of the blacksmiths menus. Then it took about 5 to 10 seconds to pop. It popped on the app first before the Xbox.

There are a total of 14 Infusions that can be performed at Andre the Blacksmiths station in Firelink Shrine using infusion gems that you will find throughout the game. I would suggest using the Fextralife wiki to find detailed locations for gems. In order for most of these infusions to be possible to perform, you will require the following coals,

Farron Coal
Sage Coal
Profaned Coal
Giant's Coal

In order to obtain the achievement, you must perform the following infusions on any weapon,

Lighting
Dark
Deep
Hollow
Fire
Chaos
Blood
Refined
Raw
Heavy
Sharp
Poison
Crystal
Blessed
Simple

Note: You do not need to use the shriving stone at all in order to obtain this achievement.

To infuse a weapon you need to take it to Blacksmith Andre in Firelink Shrine, you most have to relevant coal and the necessary gem stone. To get them all you’ll need the following:

Farron Coal – found in the Road of Sacrifices. From the Halfway Fortress bonfire go straight ahead and drop down the ledges on the right side, past some poison beasts and crucified undead and into a door at the end. Hand a right here and head down to a Black Knight the coal is on a body just past him. Allows Heavy, Sharp and Poison infusion.
Sage’s Coal – found in Farron Keep. From the first bonfire head left through the swamp until you come to a tower guarded by a Darkwraith, the coal is on a body inside. Allows Crystal, Blessed and Deep infusion.
Profaned Coal – found in Irithyll Dungeon. In the same large room where you find multiple jailers and Karla the Witch is locked up. On the left side (facing the main exit) is a room full of malformed beasts, the coal is on a body in this room. Allows Dark, Blood and Hollow infusion.
Giant’s Coal – found in Anor Londo. From the bonfire, head up the stairs and hand a left. Enter the doorway through here to find the coal on the giant blacksmiths corpse. Allows Lightning, Simple and Chaos infusion.

You’ll also need the relevant gems which can be found in a few places or dropped by enemies, but here is a helpful guide:

Fire Gem – can be chosen as a starting gift or dropped by the Fire Demon you fight with Siegwald in the Undead Settlement.
Refined Gem – on a corpse between the two dragons in Lothric Castle or dropped by a Crystal Lizard in the Grand Archives.
Heavy Gem – speak to Hawkwood at Firelink after you kill the Crystal Sage or dropped by Crystal Lizard in ravine (on way to find Irina) in Undead Settlement.
Raw Gem – kill Crystal Lizard on roof with Pus of Man enemy in High Wall of Lothric or can drop from the hollow enemies in this area.
Crystal Gem – kill Crystal Lizard in the building before Crystal Sage boss fight or dropped by Sorceror Hollows in Crucifixion Woods.
Hollow Gem – from the Farron Keep Perimeter bonfire turn around and head forward until you reach a hole in the wall to your right, drop down to a ledge with this item on a corpse or drop down off the roof in the Grand Archives (after the first Gargoyle) and find it on a corpse in a corridor behind you.
Deep Gem – in Cathedral of the Deep, head around the room with the giant and up the stairs, then go left up the next stairs and head up to a balcony with an Evangelist enemy the gem is on a corpse here. Also dropped by Deacons of the Deep on your way to Anor Londo or in Anor Londo itself.
Blessed Gem – in Cathedral of the Deep make your way up to the rafters above the giant and head to the right side, it’s behind a Knight with a Greatsword, also in the rafters of Lothric Castle if you drop down the hole in the building after the three Gold Winged Knights.
Poison Gem – from the Keep Ruins bonfire in Farron Keep go forward and look right to see three large Ghru standing around a corpse holding this item or grab from a corpse in the toxic swamp area in the Profaned Capital.
Sharp Gem – kill a Crystal Lizard just above the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire in Undead Settlement or on a corpse by a whip wielding skeleton in the Catacombs of Carthus.
Chaos Gem – on a corpse in Smouldering Lake past all the Giant Crabs (turn off the ballista first) or from a Crystal Lizard near the start of the Demon Ruins in this area.
Lightning Gem – by the large alter in Irythrill of Boreal Valley, just below the Pontiff boss fight door, or one will be on a corpse after the first enemy you encounter in Archdragon Peak.
Bleed Gem – down the steps from the Church of Yorshka bonfire leads to a dark room full of invisible enemies, go through here and drop to a ledge on the right side when you head outside. It’s also a rare drop from the invisible enemies.
Simple Gem – in Irythrill Dungeon cross the bridge in the first area and go left, head down some steps to find one on a corpse. Alternatively after the Pontiff boss fight head outside and left around the building, under the bridge and up the stairs. Go back on yourself and head back inside where you fought the boss to find a Crystal Lizard to kill to get a gem.
Dark Gem – in the Consumed Kings Garden look under the left set of stairs just before the boss room or they can drop from Pus of Man enemies here and elsewhere.

As it turned out, you need to harden it yourself. An item with depth hardening was dropped for me, but the trophy did not appear until I had hardened another weapon to depth.

As Vladsseven correctly noted, instead of the “stone of loss” there should be a “deep gem”. There are 15 types of stones and 15 types of hardening in total. The Stone of Loss removes the hardening from a weapon.

Also, to use all the gems found, you need to find all the coals and give them to the blacksmith.

It is not necessary to have them in your inventory. I used all the hardenings at once on one weapon. It took about 140 souls and 15 stones + the 16th which removes the hardening from the weapon.

If someone suffered as much as I did, then I will make your life easier: TO RECEIVE THIS TROPHY, YOU MUST HAVE ALL IMPREGNATED WEAPONS IN YOUR INVENTORY.
It didn’t fall out for me because I soaked the same sword with different crap and nothing happened. In short, you take all the junk out of your pocket and start sharpening it one by one. Then everything is fine.

Also, it is important to HARDEN the weapon, and not to find a weapon of a certain type. For some time I puzzled over why the trophy did not fall, although there were all 15 types of hardened weapons in the inventory, and then I remembered that I found the deep ax and did not harden it myself from Anri.

There are 15 impregnation options in total. Stones for this are quite rare, but each location has at least 1 stone for improvements.
I advise you to save this trophy for the end of the game. After you explore all the locations, you will have at least 1 stone of all types. Save the save to a flash drive, then take the simplest weapon and upgrade in order. Once you get the trophy, reload it and all the stones will remain unused.

An important point, if you harden like me at the end of the game, then:
1. merge your save to the cloud just in case
2. Please note that when hardening weapons in a row, the impregnations (sharpenings) themselves are shifted in the menu, so you can get confused and miss one of the options.
3. The weapon does not have to be on you, just be careful, the trophy is not glitchy and will definitely fall out.
