How to unlock the Pontiff Sulyvahn achievement in DARK SOULS III - Definitive Guide

Pontiff Sulyvahn is the 8th boss you will fight and the most deadly out of them all at this point if you allow him to be.

Pontiff uses a mix between magic and fire swords and can shoot out magic projectiles from time to time. When I said deadly before I did mean it and here's why, Pontiff is very fast, his movement speed can allow him to get behind you in a matter of seconds & if he hits you with a combo it is going to deal some very major damage.

The hardest part though is when he splits into two. His double or phantom in this case will mimic all the attacks and movements he does so if you get caught in a combo from both then you're most likely to die.

However, there is a way around this if you use stamina correctly. When he gets on his knees and has black aura around him don't charge him as you will get shoved back and hurt. When he is standing still and not moving if you have been careful with your stamina you can kill the phantom as it spawns by hitting the boss damaging both at the same time.

I, too, had trouble with Sulyvahn. Then I tried parrying, and the first part of the fight became easy, and defeated the guy right away. I assume parrying would be effective in the latter half as well, although I resorted to more classic approach, panic-rolling and swordmashing.

Black Hand Gotthard, Pale Londor Shade, and Anri can be summoned to this battle (two normally or all three if you use the dried finger).

I have serious problems approaching the boss fight. Those Irityll knights seriously own me every single time, even on a speedrun

It didn't unlock for me at first either, what worked for me that I simply ported back to the Firelink Shrine and quit the game and closed it from the dashboard after reloading back into my save it unlocked for me

Found in Irythrill of Boreal Valley.

There are three potential summons outside of this guys room (says it all really) depending on your progress: Black Hand Gottard, Londor Pale Shade and Anri of Astora. All help is appreciated. The boss has swords that do fire and magic damage so plan accordingly. He does a number of slashes and stab attacks, plus a magic infused whirl attack too. At half health he will summon a rather annoying clone of himself to annoy you.

The best plan is to either stay at mid range to bait his lunge attack, then punish him and get back to range. Alternatively, with a strength build you can get in close and strafe him until you get a good opening and then attack. Cheap but effective.

In the first phase, it is best to try to stay behind his back, after the boss has carried out a series of blows, make 1 blow to him and then again stand behind the shield and wait for the boss to turn his back to us. If you follow this tactic, then in the first stage you will spend only 1 estus, this is very important, because at the second stage his clone (and he himself) will not give you peace. At the second stage, you really need to kill his clone as quickly as possible and then finish off him himself. Another tip: when the boss enters the second phase, I recommend not hitting him, but moving away, because his transformation destroys 75% of your HP

His shadow appeared twice for me. I heard that this is rare, but it’s better to be more careful

His fast movement and sweeping attacks make him quite a difficult boss.

Right before the entrance you can summon an NPC if you are in human form. In this case, the boss will usually attack him. All we have to do is come from behind and attack.

In the second phase he will summon a clone, if you kill the clone, then a little later he will summon him again. The advice is to quickly deal with the clone and attack the boss as much as possible.

When the boss summons a clone, you can destroy about a third of the clone's health, because... they stand motionless. The trick of the second stage is that the boss repeats the movements of the clone; in fact, you can predict what the main body will do, so I recommend focusing on the mirage.

This boss is quite easy to parry. To do this, take a buckler or target, as they have large windows for parrying, unlike other shields.

The boss is difficult, but if you calculate his timings, then even without a shield you will spend 3 times this time, in the second you don’t have to kill the clone, he helped me predict the boss’s attacks, it is best to hit after the first blow in flight, after which he will not be able to fight for a short time moves and when he hits the ground once

Wear yourself with rings that increase strength, if you have any, take the shield for 100 from physical damage. During the fight, stay close to it in constant movement with the shield at the ready, rolls to a minimum, try to go behind your back and hit in breaks after its series. the second stage when he starts summoning a clone, don’t rush, the clone doesn’t come out right away, hit exactly when the clone appears (so that the entire green stamina bar goes to the clone), then you will either get rid of him immediately or there will only be one hit left. Then one on one old scheme, when calling the second clone, hit the pontiff this time, right away, until you finish it off.
