How to unlock the The Nameless King achievement in DARK SOULS III - Definitive Guide

This is a very hard two phase fight; the transition from the slower-paced first phase to the often chaotic second phase can be a little jarring, and will likely lead to a few deaths. You may be great at Souls (I consider myself above average), but this fight can shove your face in the sand and laugh at you if you aren't prepared. Once you accept that, then you can ruin this hollowed King's day. To access this fight within Archdragon Peak, you first need to acquire the "path of the dragon" gesture after the Oseiros boss fight in the Consumed King's Garden. After that, return to Irithyll Dungeon and use the gesture next to the bodies where you acquired the dragon torso stone, then you will be teleported to Archdragon Peak. Continue through Archdragon Peak until you reach a gigantic bell (you can't miss it), pull the nearby lever and the boss will become accessible.
My personal ring setup was the ring of favor, thunder stoneplate ring (for the second phase of the fight), cloranthy ring (extremely helpful if you are dodging often in the second phase, and the silver serpent ring (this can be swapped out for a fire stoneplate to make the first phase easier).

King of the Storm

For the first phase of the fight, you will be fighting the King of the Storm (a very recognizable figure in the Souls mythology for anyone who has played DS1) on top of his Thunderdrake. I would suggest using a weapon with an upward/downward strike in order to capitalize on more opportunities when the dragon is vulnerable, otherwise you will only be able to hit his head (which takes far more damage than the legs) when it is on the ground.

Fire Breath
The dragon will cock his head and release a concentrated stream of fire. Once you learn the tell, this is an extremely easy way to rack up damage on the head/neck for the first phase.

Aerial Firestorm
This attack will look very familiar to anyone who has fought Kalameet in DS1, but it can be a little more difficult to dodge. As soon as you see the dragon fly straight up, unlock and run/roll as fast as you can in the opposite direction. If you are having difficulty dodging this, then the fire stoneplate ring will be your best friend for the fight.

Sword Swipes
The King will swipe/thrust from multiple angles in a series of up to 3 attacks. The swipes are deceptively slow, and you will likely learn the timing just from dodging too early a few times. Simply rolling into the swipes or far enough away from the spear lunges will leave the dragon open to a counterattack.

Lighting Spear with Spear Follow-up
The dragon will circle you in the air and the King will throw a lightning spear. Lock on and dodge as soon as the King jerks his hand to throw the spear. The King will follow up the lightning spear with a swipe of his spear every time. The timing for this is pretty forgiving and predictable after seeing it a few times.

The Nameless King
I don't think anyone would argue against this being the most difficult fight in DS3, and one of the harder fights in the Souls series. The King has a very diverse moveset with a series of deceptively slow attacks, some very fast attacks, and lightning attacks. Describing the individual timing of each of his attacks would be of little use, but my video below includes his entire moveset. It is worth mentioning that you can occasionally stagger him and follow-up with a high damage attack if you press rb next to him (very similar to the visceral attack from Bloodborne).

Awesome suggestion, I just updated it. It's a very Dark Souls (obscure) way of having to gain access.

The only way I was finally able to beat him, was to maintain my distance from him and bait him into the jump-and-slam/thrust attack. This lets you get a few hits in before rolling away.

You still haven't actually put in there how to access this boss. You explained getting to the zone, which is a start. Anyway, I fought a dragon and cleared the entire zone and am pretty sure of what I need to do to fight him...

Wow this guy is a major jerk. Hard enough to get to phase 2 w/ some estus left, let alone have a shot to kill him. He keeps hitting me when it seems like I should have dodged his attacks :(.

Just gave it an extra update.
There is an interesting ring that might help you out. The carthus bloodring extends the i-frames during rolls if you want to make the timing a little more lenient for a dodging-centric strategy.

I died more than any other boss, but once I had the timing down it was a very satisfying kill!

I would suggest being unlocked for the majority of the first phase of the fight. It's much easier to see when the king is raising his weapon to strike that way.

This boss is pretty easy if you have the dragonslayer greatshield, it pretty much blocks 95% damage of all his attacks (lightning) also doesn't consume much stamina.

The camera makes this way harder than it needs to be , the amount of swings and misses I have on phase one is a joke and i'm not even locked on that was far worse angry

Beat the Nameless King on 2nd try. The thunder-drake phase was harder than I thought because of the camera angle. Sometimes I missed the blocking because of this.

^Wow, I didn't even think of that. Good call. Are summons hard to come by on NG++? I'm solid with Souls games, but have way less patience these days. I'd gladly gank squad him with 4 and make a joke of it. I heard the Dragonslayer Armor shield is pretty OP on him too.

Summons are all relative to your SL, not NG cycle in DS3 (luckily)

Finally ‘got gud’ after 100+ tries. Finally got him with a Deep Battle Axe+9, chloranthy ring, ring of favour, thunder stone plate ring & lightning resistant shield. 1st phase was easy but always got smoked by his combos. Just learn the timing, don’t spam roll and have a dark weapon to get him down.

Damn I was dreading this boss, but when it came down too it, only took 4 tries was quite rewarding.

If i had any tips, i'd say don't lock on to anything during the first form.
And on the second form don't greed for hits, and focus on dodging more than dealing damage

Best advice i have is on your first playthrough save him until you've done most everything else, you should be leveled enough to explore most of the ringed city if you own it. grab the +3 rings in the dlc and aim for 40 vigor if you don't have the dlc just find the basic versions. Ring of steel protection+3 , ring of favor+3 and thunder stoneplate ring plus all that health should give you enough buffer to learn his move set which becomes very easy to read and you'll be able to brush off mistakes a bit easier. stick to one or two fast hits with each opening and dont freak out trying to heal when there is no opening you'll die more from that than being low health.

I think I'm decent at souls, but this guy's timing I just couldn't get down in a reasonable amount of time, and I hated redoing phase 1. For laughs I tried just using a bow in phase 2, and beat it on my first attempt. He is much less aggressive when you keep a distance. You still need to dodge plenty, but it's far less in-your-face.

Good guide.

I would suggest explaining what to do to access this boss.

And something that helped me with the first phase was positioning- always trying to stay in front of the Dragon. Not under or behind. If I maintained a slight distance in front, I found it easier and safer to engage.

If you have a friend who is a tank, re-allocate to a FTH/INT/DEX build the and rest in health. The dragon is weak to lighting so hit its head with your strongest lighting spells ( I only had Sunlight Spear at the time) from just outside his hit area, and Lighting Stake when close. Then when he is by him self he is weak to fire, Chaos Orb or Vestiges him to oblivion. I was at SL190 and used the Witch, Suns, Estes & Favor rings. It helps to wait until NG++ as you have to kill him there anyway for the +2 Covetous Gold Serpent Ring. Although, the Dragonslayer armor is very good in my Miracle Knight build, so getting that early is a big help.

The Nameless King is the most difficult boss in Dark Souls III. But still have an easy way to pull it through.

Equip 'Dragonslayer Greatshield / 猎龙大盾' which can be exchanged with 'Soul of Dragonslayer Armour / 猎龙铠甲之魂' will give you a strongly protection of lightning-attack and the most attack type of the Nameless King is lightning so it let you against most attack directly.

If you don't own 'Dragonslayer Greatshield / 猎龙大盾' you can equip 'Havel's Greatshield / 哈维尔的大盾' instead which drops by a NPC in 'Archdragon Peak / 古龙顶端', it still provides considerable protections by all attack type.

For the most reduction of lightning damage, you can equip 'Thunder Stoneplate Ring / 雷方石戒指' which also found in 'Archdragon Peak / 古龙顶端', and the rest of rings are 'Chloranthy Ring / 绿花戒指' and 'Ring of Favor / 宠爱戒指'.

Here is my DVR of phase 2 of the Nameless King, hope it helps

OPTIONAL BOSS. Found in Archdragon Peak.

You need to get the Path of the Dragon gesture from the room behind the boss in the Consumed Garden, then use it by the dragon statue in Irithyll Dungeon to get to this location. To access him you must reach the large bell and then pull the lever to activate it. You can then drop onto the fog floor by the lever and go forward to the boss gate. He is a tough fight and uses a lot of lightning so any protection you have against that would be handy.

He comes in two stages. The first is with him on his dragon. He has a range of attacks: he does a one, two or three hit combo with his spear, he charges his spear with lightning and then dives forward to smash the ground, the dragon flies straight up and then breathes fire directly below him (run as soon as he starts doing this), he flies in a circle and lobs a lightning spear at you and then swoops straight at you after or the dragon breathes fire in an arc ahead of him. In truth this stage is the easier one. Stay just in front of the dragon (rather than underneath or the side) and bait the spear or lightning smash attacks, roll through them and smack the dragons head two/three times then back off (or shield up). If he does the sweeping breath attack roll to one side of the head get some strikes in. You can dodge roll past the lightning spears. At some point you will stagger the dragon – get close to the head and hit RB to do massive damage in a triggered animation. Then get a couple more hits in as he recovers. Once the dragon dies it’s onto stage two.

This bit is brutal. The King has a number of VERY fast combos and attacks, some so quick they can break your lock on and hit you in the back. At close range he will use rapid combos and try and kick you. At medium range he will do a rapid dash attack or jump in the air and try and smash you (this has a long recovery so is good for getting a hit in). At long range he will do a wide sweeping wave attack followed by a single quick wave attack (you can dodge both if you roll sideways enough) or just the single wave attack which has slight homing properties. DO NOT GET GREEDY, stick to single hits. Personally I used a bow and arrows, kept massive distance and hit him two/three times with arrows, dodged the long range wave attacks and dodged like crazy when he got close until I had range again. I still needed a lot of healing as the timing for dodging is not that generous. Good luck.

The boss is located in the location - Archdragon Peak.

One of the most inconvenient bosses in the game. The battle is divided into two stages.
First, the boss flies on a dragon. Wait for the moment when the dragon's head is close to the ground and attack the head or neck. Legs do virtually no damage.
Second phase. Here the boss appears before us on his own two feet. During the battle, he combines physical attacks with magical ones. In addition, it moves quickly. It's better to beat him with partners. One distracts him, the others hit him from behind.

It is best to go through 3. At stage 1, we can easily remove 200-1000 HP with magic damage.
At stage 2, we dodge the blows with rolls, the other 2 hit us in the back. He re-aggross to the last one to hit. Repeat until his death. It’s good to have a mage on your team (at stage 1 he can go solo, at stage 2 he can injure 100-300 HP). The best protection against fire and lightning.
PS. Three of them took up to 12 attempts.

An excellent tactic is a crossbow. mine is +10 and killed his chicken and himself in about 5 minutes. keep your distance from him and that’s it. when he takes off, just forward and somersault, and the main thing is to keep your distance so that not a single blow hits him. + be careful not to run into the walls, otherwise it may be difficult to dodge him

Tactics for the nameless king.

When playing solo, you need to remember the following:
1) at the first stage, the dragon can be stunned - we hit with a fast sword (I use Iriitil at +5) three or four times and roll away, in the 3rd or 4th cycle the dragon falls and you can carry out a powerful counterattack;
2) at the first stage, constantly stay in front of the dragon’s muzzle, so that you can see the rider; the roll should be done immediately after the start of its striking movement; if done earlier or later, the blow will go straight at you;
2) at the second stage, keep an average distance, first take a shield with high lightning resistance (100 physics and 89 lightning), put on a ring with a yellow stone and a ring of physical protection. Maintain your distance and wait for the jump, when the boss makes a high jump, roll to the left and forward and then deliver two quick blows and again break the distance with two or three rolls. The battle is long and mistakes cannot be made.

It is advisable to have the maximum number of flasks with estus and purchase heavenly blessings and equip sibgrau, there are not enough flasks, the boss damages a lot and often.

The first stage is not a problem, you don’t need to worry too much. I beat him with the Iretil sword, sometimes a state passes when you can do a “repost” or whatever it’s called here. In short, it’s better to stay close to the boss, 1-2 hits and a roll. I killed him solo using this tactic.

The boss is not as scary as they say. I killed one even without a coal fortune, the main thing is to study his attacks and a little skill.
In the first stage there should be no problems; after several attempts you will be able to kill the Wyvern without wasting much bottles. the main thing is not to go under it and strike it on the head after successfully dodging the king’s attack.
Next comes a fight with the king himself. kept a medium distance, often dodging his attacks to the right side and avoided most of his attacks and series of attacks including the shock wave. Direct explosive strikes of lightning did not reach me due to the distance, and I dodged the lightning from above after a split second as the king raised his sword. As soon as the boss flies up for a further attack, we somersault in his direction and after he lands, we do two blows to the back and retreat again, somersaulting under his blows, not earlier, otherwise you will miss a series of these blows. He also has a similar attack, only a little faster and from the side, your actions are the same, somersault under him and after the attack do one hit instead of two.

I will share with you tactics and equipment:

Scholarship - 40
Durability - 40
Strength - 30
Intelligence - 60
Vera - 30

Left hand: Scholar's candelabra
Right hand: Staff of the pre-court sorcerer +7

On the head: Crown of Dawn

Rings:

Ring of Magic Power
Ring with a young dragon
Ring with a Furious Dragon
Sage's Ring +2

Distributed estus: normal - 8, ashen - 7

Enchantments: Hovering Soul Cluster, Crystal Soul Spear.

Tactics:

Enter the arena, a clot will immediately appear and go hit the chicken with a crystal spear, it only takes 3-4 hits, because in this uniform it will take 1000+ HP from it, replenish your intellect stamina with ashen estus.
The second stage, again the incoming clot of souls and from a distance hit the souls of this reptile with a spear. Literally 6-7 hits and you’re done. everything took about 3-4 minutes.

The first phase does not cause any problems, you will quickly get used to it. The main thing is to take your time, take a couple of hits and move away. Irithyl sword is the best option.
At the second stage I suffered, and then decided to take a bow, I killed it the first time! We constantly go back and shoot, the boss will follow you on foot. When it releases waves, we quickly take out the shield, the damage is blocked. And so on until victory.

At the first stage, when this GHOUL flies on a bird, stand under it and throw fireballs, this is me to the gentlemen magicians from my caste, when he takes off sharply, there will be a waterfall of fire get away as soon as possible keeping at a medium distance is not an option, it always ends lethally, at least in most cases, at the second stage, on the contrary, keep the distance further than the average, otherwise he will start slashing with a spear so that you do not have enough stamina to dodge and any blow can become a one-shot, this Ghoul crits quite often, when releasing thunder attacks, it is important to keep the correct timing; when charging a spear, do not jump immediately, dodge only after a swing or lunge, it helped me in 100% of cases! This tactic is exclusive to magicians!

The most difficult boss in the game, but you just have to get used to it and you can kill him calmly while drinking estus. The problem is only in a specific motion set - the attacks are not too fast so that you are forced to rape only when you see the start of the animation and not slow enough that you can make mistakes with charging regularity. The first phase will not cause problems for any normal (read: DS lover) creature except for the first attempts when this is all new. I described the problems of the second phase above. I beat the boss twice, the first attempt caused a lot of pain and suffering, but on a new character I beat him solo on the first try without any problems. The second time I killed him with a light weapon, maybe that’s why it was easier. If you've killed Amygdala in cursed dungeons (or at least know what I mean), then this boss joke won't dare take up much of your time.
