How to unlock the The Usurpation of Fire achievement in DARK SOULS III - Definitive Guide

External image

This ending requires some specific interaction with a few NPCs. These are the steps that I followed. Be sure to exhaust all dialogue whenever talking with an NPC.

1) Talk to Yoel of Londor when you first reach the Undead Settlement and say "yes" so he will relocate to Firelink Shrine.

2) "Draw out your true power" (level up) five times with Yoel. The first level up is available as soon as he gets to Firelink Shrine. After that, you must die twice before he offers to give you another free level. I suggest suiciding off the nearest cliff and getting your five free levels immediately. Leveling up with Yoel gives you Dark Sigils, which cause you to turn hollow when you die (causing a change in physical appearance- nothing else). The Firekeeper can cure the Dark Sigil if you return a Firekeeper Soul to her, but this breaks the questline and voids this achievement, so don't do it. After leveling up five times through Yoel, he will die and Yuria of Londor will appear.

NOTE: Yoel will die when you enter the Catacombs of Carthus after killing the Abyss Watchers so be sure to get your five levels before that.

3) Talk to Yuria in Firelink Shrine.

4) Talk to Anri and Horus at the Halfway Keep bonfire in the Road of Sacrifices.

5) Defeat the Deacons of the Deep in the Cathedral of the Deep (I summoned Anri and Horace, not sure if it matters).

6) Talk to Anri and Horus in Firelink Shrine.

7) Talk to Anri in the Catacombs of Carthus. From the Abyss Watchers bonfire, enter the catacombs, head across a long bridge and enter the next room, turn right and drop down to a lower level, then head to the back/left area and go through a passage and you'll find her.

8) Talk to Anri at his/her next location in the Catacombs of Carthus. From the Catacombs of Carthus bonfire, head left and then through a hallway just off to the right (you had to lower a gate from the other side to be able to get through) and you'll see a large wooden bridge. Take a path on the right just before the bridge and you'll see Anri at the end.

9) Drop down from where Anri is to a platform that leads to the far side of the bridge. Attack the supports so the bridge collapses, then use the broken bridge as a ladder and climb down. Work your way to the Smouldering Lake area below. Follow along the right side wall in the open lake area where you get pelted with large projectiles and you'll enter a cave with a room at the end where you'll find Horace, who is aggressive to you. Kill him.

10) Talk to Anri again next to the bridge. Choose "Tell about the Smouldering Lake."

11) Talk to Anri at the Church of Yorshka bonfire in Ithiryll of the Boreal Valley.

NOTE: There are some human statues in the corner of this area and one of them is a pilgrim enemy in disguise. If you attack the statues, you can kill it (and receive the Chameleon sorcery). DO NOT DO THIS or it will end the questline and void the achievement. This pilgrim kidnaps Anri to advance the questline.

12) Defeat Pontiff Sulyvhan in Ithiryll of the Boreal Valley.

13) Return to Firelink shrine and talk to Yuria. She will tell you that your spouse is ready.

14) Go to the Darkmoon Tomb (located behind a illusory wall in a room right before you reach the twisting/rising platform that you use to reach Anor Londo) and talk to the pilgrim there. You'll receive a quest-related item.

15) Interact with Anri on the altar.

16) Talk to Yuria in Firelink Shrine.

17) Proceed through the rest of the game. Upon defeating the final boss, simply interact with the bonfire to trigger this ending.

Remember that if you return the Firekeeper Soul from the top of the locked tower in Firelink shrine to the Firekeeper, she will offer to cure the Dark Sigil. DO NOT DO HAVE HER DO THIS or Yuria will become angry and leave and you won't be able to get the achievement. After completing the game and getting the achievement, feel free to have the Firekeeper cure you (which will happen automatically when you start the next playthrough).

On which playthrough would you advise getting this done?

I would try to get this ending first, this way if you make a mistake, you can do it in your second playthrough. And if you somehow mess up again, you could try again in your third.

So, it appears that i need to stay hollow for the entire play through to get the achievement. One question though....being hollow affects my ability to invade others or summon other players to help me out in boss fights? Are there any "side-effects" of being hollow?

As far as I know, the only negative consequence is your appearance. And that can be fixed with a purging stone or by the Velka statue (until you die some more).

ok, so fixing my appearance with purging stone or by velka statue is it going to break the "The Usurpation of Fire" progress? Many thanks :)

how can you stay hollow the entire playthrough though because when you beat a boss you automatically become "ember-ed" or whatever right?

By BIG L RETURNS on 12 Apr 2016 23:10
Two different things. Hollow results from dying when you have dark sigils. Dying when embered just loses your ember.

shit ok so i've already gotten to step 3 cause Yuria has appeared. I don't really remember the game ever telling me i'm hollow now though? I assume i am now? Wiki says you need a fire keeper soul to cleanse yourself through the fire keeper.

If you have dark sigils, when you die you'll start becoming hollow. It can be cured with a consumable that Yuria sells or at the Velka statue.

Firekeeper soul lets her heal your dark sigils. It's expensive and doing so makes Yuria hate you and voids the usurpation ending.

I've never seen a dark sigil ever. If I go to my character stat screen it says I have a hollowing under my actual level. So I think I'm still good right. Sorry I'm just confused by what exactly constitutes hollowing in this game.

A question. Does it mean I can get 5 free level-ups per playthrough? I can simply advance the quest up to Step 2, and can still get the other endings right?

Big L: if you level up with Yoel, you get a dark sigil each time. I believe they are at the end of your "tools" inventory tab.

Imaginary: Yes and yes.

Being hollow is a consequence of dying when you have dark sigils. The only thing that happens when you are hollow is that your appearance looks different. You start to look like a zombie.

By vSully on 15 Apr 2016 00:29
I understand that Hollow is a bit different this go around. I heard you can summon while Hollow, is that correct? While going for this particular ending are you fully able to co-op or does leveling your "Hollowness" eventually disable co-op? Edit: sorry, this is a redundant question. I only ask because the Wiki makes mention of being able to lose the ability to co-op. Just curious if that's accurate.

You should include that Yoel will die if you open the door to catacomb of carthus after abyss watcher fight. So if you dont have 5 dark sigils before yoel die then yuria wont show up.

Giving the firekeeper the soul is fine. Just don't heal the dark sigils.

No idea how Yuria could die but I'm sure it's ruined.

I think you need Yuria alive when you trigger the ending after the final boss but I'm not sure.

That's a pretty silly thing to post in all of my solutions when you haven't even tested it. I could understand if you had gotten it to work and you knew for sure that it was possible.

You have to play through the game three times, anyway, to get all the rings.

First off fantastice guide. No way i wouldve got this solo as i finished up catacombs wayyy before killing the deacons.

My problem though is Step 9 is done and horace is dead.

However returning to anri's previous spot for step 10 all that is there is a prism stone in her place.

@that595guy: you carry your character over to the next play through. Level, weapons, armor. You just have to find quest related items all over again as you start from the beginning.

If that's the case, you can probably get both endings on one save. Beat the final boss, take your game offline, finish one ending, delete your local save, go online, load your cloud save, and get the other ending.

You're not supposed to do anything with the statue in the church. I point out that you can attack it to get it the Chamaeleon sorcery, but that would screw everything up.

You get Chameleon anyway if you follow the quest through to the wedding. The NPC from before dies afterwards just outside the Darkmoon tomb and you can pick it up off the corpse.

10) Talk to Anri again next to the bridge. Choose "Tell about the Smouldering Lake."
Just small clarification for players because this confused me during my playthrough - if you kill the area boss before killing Horace or moving back to Anri after Horace is defeated, she'll move to Church of Yorshka. You know it happened once the prism stones are found on her spot. It doesn't break this ending.

That505Guy is correct. Also can play off-line with a save after beating the last boss. Choose desired ending, dash board out, then delete manual save and then go back on-line and reload from cloud and start from the original save after beating boss, and select next ending without using two boxes. Trickier if you have saved on a larger piggyback drive as you must remember which hard drive has your stuff and must be sure it is not on both. So, better in that case to use two boxes.

Very frustrating to have worked for a specific ending and unwittingly choose one of the two without an achievement. GRRR...not that it happened to me....or anything.

So I didn't know about Anri appearing at various locations at first, but was still able to get the achievement. I think I was at the Dragonslayer Armor boss fight, so I dunno if there is a certain point that makes Anri just disappear or not. They weren't at the first location in the Catacombs, but I found them at the second and everything proceeded as normal after that.

Maybe. Maybe not. I don't think it's as bad as you make it out for somebody who explores the game in great detail and attempts to leave no stone unturned as they play through.

To be fair, some of the steps may be unnecessary. There may be a more streamlined solution but I can't go back and test without playing through the game multiple times. I just know that all of the steps on this order will work.

In response to the suggestion above from That505Guy, be very careful if trying to use two Xboxes to get two or more endings in quick succession. I tested it early game on a second character and whilst the original Xbox retained the console data, when you try to re-load it does not synch up with the cloud. The game options only allow you to start a new game.

Just to gather information and make sure I understand everything correctly, being Hollowed affects nothing but your appearance. You can use the Yuria consumable to fix your appearance or a statue, but don't heal Dark Sigils at all.

Is there any other reason to give the Firekeeper soul to the Firekeeper? Or should I just avoid that all together?

This is just an idea on how to get all three ending achievements in one run.

Ok so this is only just an idea because I'm not 100% familiar with how the Xbox loads in.

This would require two xbox ones.

Dark souls requires 3 playthroughs. If before you get to the end game you logged out of your main xbox which would put your save in the cloud. You then get onto your second xbox load up your cloud save get a checkpoint so the game saves locally on xbox 2. Relog back into xbox one get the ending you want then go to game management through the Xbox dashboard and delete your save from everywhere. Get back on xbox number 2 start from local save (because there is no online save to sync to). Then get a checkpoint so it saves to the cloud and get back on your xbox one and sync with cloud. Repeat for all three endings.

I'm standing before the Pontiff and I can summon Anri to fight with him, but how can this be? Waasn't he kidnapped by this enemy in the church? I'm confused now if I should summon Anri or not. In DS2 the was a few NPCs you HAVE TO fight with against bosses to get the armor of them.. so I don't know what I should do xD

Some clarification on my play through: I did everything correctly up until "tell Anri what happened at smouldering lake" because I didn't tell her prior to killing the boss across the breakable bridge in that area. I also didn't interact with the statue in the corner at the yorshka bonfire after talking with Anri there, realizing this after I had travelled away, so I travellwd back again and the statue was still in the corner so I could interact with it, BUT this was before I killed the boss in this area. As such, I was still able to get this ending. Hope this helps.

It's possible to get all 3 endings on one playthrough if you can get a friend to drop all the rings for the "Master of Rings" achievement and then do the cloud trick at the end of the game to get all 3 ending achievements. You also have to have enough souls to heal your dark sigils for the 3rd ending or this won't work. Yes, you can get the proper bow gesture on the Usurpation of Fire run as I just did it. Sirris questline has nothing to do with the Usurpation of Fire ending.

After killing the Soul of Cinder, I quit the game from the Dark Souls menu and then also quit the game from the Xbox Dashboard. This will obviously save your game before you make your final decision. I reloaded the game and then interacted with the First Flame to get the "Usurpation of Fire" ending. As soon as that achievement pops hit the Xbox Button then scroll to Dark Souls III and hit the menu button and go to Manage game & add-ons > Saved data > Delete all. This will delete your save from the console only (THIS IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN THE "DELETE EVERYWHERE" OPTION, WHICH YOU DO NOT WANT TO SELECT). Reload game again and let it sync with Xbox Live and then warp back to Firelink Shrine and give "Eyes of a Firekeeper" to Firekeeper and Return to First flame and Summon Firekeeper using summon sign on ground (DO NOT interact with First Flame) to get the "End of Fire" Achievement. As soon as that achievement pops hit the Xbox Button then scroll to Dark Souls III and hit the menu button and go to Manage game & add-ons > Saved data > Delete all. Load game back up again and warp back to Firelink Shrine and give Soul of a Firekeeper to Firekeeper and Pay Firekeeper in souls to heal your dark sigils then warp back to First Flame, Interact with First Flame to get the "To Link the First Flame" ending achievement, which is the 3rd ending achievement on one playthrough.

I just did this, so I know this works, but you have to be quick with the "dashboarding" after each achievement pops.

Two things:

1.) If you do not see Anri at the shrine after you defeat the deacons, it just means you did not exhaust her dialogue. Go back to the halfway keep, and she should still be there. Exhaust her dialogue, and then return to firelink and both Anri and Horace should be there.

2.) You do not have to do anything with Horace in Smouldering Lake. You do not even need to go to Smouldering Lake. If you do not tell Anri where Horace is, then he/she will leave a prism stone where you meet her at the bridge, and meet you in the Church of Yorshka admitting that he/she could not find Horace, but will carry on anyway. So if you are trying to speedrun this game for just this achievement, then you can essentially skip over Smouldering Lake, and any other optional area.

Just adding a bit to the previous solution; when you defeat the Soul of Cinder and approach the First Flame the option will appear to "Link the First Flame". Don't let that drive you into a panic. As long as you did everything on the list correctly when you choose to Link the First Flame you'll instead get a different cutscene that ends with the Darksign Eclipse turning white like in the Achievement picture.

The Achievement will unlock at the end of the cutscene.

This ending requires some specific interaction with a few NPCs. These are the steps that I followed. Be sure to exhaust all dialogue whenever talking with an NPC.

1) Talk to Yoel of Londor when you first reach the Undead Settlement and he will relocate to Firelink.

2) "Draw out your true power" (level up) five times with Yoel. The first level up is available as soon as he gets to Firelink. After that, you must die twice before he offers to give you another free level. I suggest suiciding off the nearest cliff and getting your five free levels immediately. Leveling up with Yoel gives you Dark Sigils, which cause you to turn hollow when you die. The Firekeeper can cure the Dark Sigil if you return a Firekeeper Soul to her, but this breaks the questline and voids this achievement, so don't do it. After leveling up five times through Yoel, he will die and Yuria of Londor will appear.

NOTE: Yoel will die when you enter the Catacombs after killing the Abyss Watchers so be sure to get your five levels before that.

3) Talk to Yuria in Firelink.

4) Talk to Anri and Horus at the Halfway Keep bonfire.

5) Defeat the Deacons of the Deep (I summoned Anri and Horace, not sure if it matters).

6) Talk to Anri and Horus in Firelink.

7) Talk to Anri in the Catacombs. From the Abyss Watchers bonfire, enter the catacombs, head across a long bridge, turn right and drop down, then head to the back/left area and go through a passage and you'll find her.

8) Talk to Anri at his/her next location in the Catacombs.

Follow along the right side wall and you'll enter a cave with a large room at the end where you'll find Horace, who is aggressive to you.

13) Return to Firelink and talk to Yuria.

16) Talk to Yuria in Firelink.

17) Proceed through the rest of the game. Upon defeating the final boss, simply interact with the bonfire to trigger this ending.

Remember that if you return the Firekeeper Soul from the top of the locked tower in Firelink shrine to the Firekeeper, she can cure the Dark Sigil. DO NOT DO THIS or Yuria will become angry and leave and you won't be able to get the achievement. After completing the game and getting the achievement, feel free to have the Firekeeper cure you.

This is the most long winded ending and you need to follow a few steps to get this done.

MOST IMPORTANT: if you return the Fire Keepers Soul from the locked tower behind Firelink Shrine then DO NOT choose to heal the Dark Sign at any time until this is done. Do not miss a step, as if you skip a location the quest will fail if you proceed the game.

1) When you first reach the Undead Settlement go down the stairs and go back on yourself at the bottom. At the end of the bridge will be a number of dead pilgrims and one that is still alive. Talk to Yoel of Londor here and he will relocate to Firelink.

2) At Firelink Yoel is down the long tunnel to the left of Andre. Speak to him and he offers to draw out your true power – which seems like a free level up. You need to do this five times, with the first being free and the rest requiring two deaths (by any means) each time. Feel free to kill yourself repeatedly here until you have done five levels and he will comment on your true power if you select the option again. Leave and come back to Firelink and he will be dead, but Yuria will be standing close by (she sells all the items he offered, so don’t worry about missing them). Talk to her until she repeats herself.

3) As you make your way through the Road of Sacrifices you’ll come to the Halfway Keep bonfire and two Knights nearby. Talk to Anri and Horace until they repeat (and gain a covenant item).

4) DO NOT FIGHT PAST THE ABYSS WATCHERS YET. Make your way to the Cathedral of the Deep (past the Crystal Sage fight) and kill the Deacons of the Deep boss. You can summon Anri and Horace to help. After the fight port back to Firelink and Anri will be there – talk to him/her.

5) Now defeat the Abyss Watchers and enter the Catacombs of Carthus. As you enter, cross the long bridge and then go right, head down here and follow the path to the left to find her again. Speak to her until she repeats.

6) Progress through the Catacombs until you come to a room with a rickety wooden bridge (there is a skeleton swordsman with his back to you on a cliff edge just below it) but DO NOT CROSS IT. Instead take the narrow path to the right just before it and follow it around to Anri. Speak to her again here.

7) Now drop down from where she is standing and head towards the bridge, hit the supports to make it collapse, then interact with it to climb down to the Smouldering Lake. Fight past the demon in the first room (arrows from afar to be safe and the chest here is a mimic), then past the two floors of skeletons to reach the Lake proper. Watch out for the giant ballista here. Hug the right hand wall and follow it around to an opening, inside are two Crystal Lizards to kill and then you’ll find a hostile Horace. Kill him then return to Anri by the bridge and tell her you saw him.

8) Continue to Ithiryll of the Boreal Valley and you’ll come to the Church of Yorska bonfire. Anri is here so speak to them again (and receive a gesture for doing so) but DO NOT attack the statues on the left side of the door as you enter. One is a hidden pilgrim and killing them here voids the quest.

9) Defeat Pontiff Sulyvhan in Ithiryll of the Boreal Valley then return to Firelink and talk to Yuria, she will mention that a pilgrim has been guiding your spouse and will eventually repeat herself.

10) Warp back to the Pontiff bonfire and head outside. Go left and fight through the deacons, giants and NPC enemies here (take out the deacons on the top level first by going under the bridge and up the stairs). Now go past the giants and up the stairs into the building ahead. Up the stairs in here and out the left side to a ledge you can drop down to. Watch out for the greatbow knights and make your way up and across the ledge to a door on the right. Inside here is the path to Anor Londo but, assuming you did everything correctly, the big wall on the right will disappear as you enter. Head down to find the pilgrim again and speak to them to receive an item.

11) Head past him down a corridor and use the item on Anri. Grab the ring from the chest in here and the spell from the fresh corpse of the pilgrim. Then head to Anor Londo. Light the bonfire and warp back to Firelink to speak to Yuria.

12) Go through the rest of the game as normal but DO NOT heal the Darksign with the Fire Keeper. After killing the last boss touch the bonfire to get this alternate ending. Note that you keep your hollowed status on future playthroughs so you might want to cure yourself at some point after getting this ending to ensure you don’t get it again.

Attention, you can skip the ending! This is the best ending, leave it for the 3rd playthrough.

To gain access to this ending you need to do a number of actions during the passage:

1. Meet “Yoel of Londor” in the “Village of the Undead” (the first bonfire, where there are many people praying) . After talking with her, she goes to the Temple.
2. Continue playing and periodically come back to raise her level. You need to do this 5 times. To raise her level, she needs “Dark Sigil” marks; you can get them by dying 2 times in a row without restoring with ashes.

ATTENTION!
It is impossible to be healed by the Guardian! Otherwise , "Yuria of Londor" will not appear in the Temple.
You cannot heal after she appears until the very end of the game, otherwise she will disappear!

3. After 5 level increases , "Yoel of Londor" dies, and "Yuria of Londor" appears instead. Levels must be raised 5 times BEFORE defeating the boss "Guardians of the Abyss"
4. Near the fire "Halfway to the Fortress" location "Road of Sacrifices" we meet "Anri of Astora". We talk to her. At the same time, we enter into a covenant.
5. After killing the Deacons of the Depths boss, Anri appears in the Temple. We talk to her again.
6. After killing the boss "Guardians of the Abyss" , we go down to the Catacombs and find her and talk to her 2 times (the first time in the right room before going down the large stairs, the second time before the boss "Volnir"). The second time she will give the task to go down and kill “Horace”. Do this before you kill "Volnir".
7. After killing, return to her and talk.
8. Next, she will appear in the location “Yorshki Church” near the fire (location after the fight with the skeleton in bracelets). We talk to her again.
9. After you defeat "Pontiff" go to the "Fire Temple" and talk to "Yuria of Londor".
10. We find the “Darkmoon Tomb” location behind the ghostly wall (round room, after the Pontiff and the knights on the roof). We talk to the maid and take “Sword of a Vow” from her.
11. We go to the tomb and begin the ritual.
12. Finish the game.

ps - ANRI character can be either male or female. The character's gender will be opposite to yours.

Video from the 4th step.

Point 6 can also be done after killing Volnir. Everything is working.

After killing the Deacons of the Deep boss in the temple, he did not speak to Anri, and after killing Horace, he did not return and did not speak to Anri, but they gave him a trophy for this ending.

In the church, Yorshki accidentally killed a pilgrim pretending to be a statue with a sword in the corner, after which Yuria left.

If during the quest you cure hollowing from a firekeeper or a welk, the quest may be reset.

I missed the Pontiff and killed the giant and my NPC swore at me in the Temple and left forever. After the death of the pontiff, she did not appear ((This campaign could ruin this trophy...

In the Ershki Church, if you hit a disguised pilgrim without a weapon, you can talk to him. This will not break the quest.

In Yorshka's church there is a pilgrim in the corner, invisible, where the statues are. If you accidentally kill him, you won't get the ending. The maid who gives "Sword of a Vow" is located in front of the elevator that leads to the blades of the dark moon.

In the Russian version he is Horace. And she asks to find him, although for the desired ending you MUST KILL. You can find him like this: Cut the bridge next to Henri, go down, when you come out to the smoldering lake, move along the right wall, there will be a break in it, and Horace will be there.

It turned out that I first talked with Anri in the catacombs, but skipped the dialogue with her near the bridge and immediately went to Volnir. Having killed Volnir, he returned to the bridge (Henri was still there), went down and killed Horace. When I returned to the bridge, Henri was no longer there, i.e. the dialogue as such did not end with the question “What happened to him” - she kind of decided that he was missing, but nothing was broken - she went through the ritual, received marks, the ending didn’t break

Please, someone add to the main trophy hint that you can’t kill a pilgrim in the church unless you, like me, received the “Chameleon” enchantment, it turned out that at the end of almost the quest I password-protected everything and put it aside in ng++

After the end of the ritual, this pilgrim will lie dead in the same place where he gave you the sword, and you will receive the “Chameleon” from it.
