How to unlock the Covenant: Forest Hunter achievement in Dark Souls - Definitive Guide

The forest covenant is located inside the Darkroot Garden. There are two ways to reach the covenant. There is a back entrance, that you can find by following the shore harboring the Hydra (Near the giants, and the Havel tower). Alternatively, you can buy a seal from the blacksmith in the Undead Parish area to unlock the large sealed door, which blocks off the covenant area; the seal costs 20,000 souls.

You should know you are close to the covenant, when you enter an area with human enemies. After they are dispatched (or avoided), you need to enter the crumbling stone building that they gather around. It should be easy to spot with a little exploration around the area. Inside the building, you should see a strange rat/cat monster sitting in the windowsill. Talk to it, and respond with yes. You should then be asked if you want to join the covenant. Achievement unlocked!

You can enter the Darkroot Garden area, through the large doorway adjacent to the Undead Parish blacksmith. The area is guarded by a Titanium Demon.

If you read my more detailed explanation in the second paragraph, you will notice how I put "achievement unlocked!", right after "You should then be asked if you want to join the covenant.".

I think it just sounds more direct and better for a first paragraph, if I put you need to join, rather than you need to be asked to join. The fact that it is still shown as a secret achievement probably means a lot of people just want to know what the basic requirement is.

Although I think I will change it to discover, rather than join, by your advise.

I would also suggest that you go there offline. Peolpe that join this convenant receive a ring that allows the leader of the covenant to summon anyone that is wearing the ring to the convenant ground whenever a human player is nearing the location. In short, other people that are part of this convenant already will invade your world and try to kill you. When you are offline you only deal with ghost. As a perk for those that join, killing player when summoned nets you about 1000 souls and a green titanite shard for magic upgrade of weapons.

I can confirm d3ath's comment - there's an alternate way to Alvina (the talking cat). Near the hydra there's a waterfall with a ladder next to it. Climb up, cross a rope bridge, up another ladder and across a stone bridge. There are three large cat enemies to beat (non-respawning); once you've passed them, there's a small ruined building in this area with yet another bridge that will take you directly to Alvina.

You might try to absolve your sins, but seeing as how the cat disappeared that might not work. (copy-pasted from my reply in the second comment.)

If you say "No" the cat doesn't disappear. It does if you try to kill it. So, maybe, there's hope in the absolvation: pay the guy at the fist bell you rang, just remember that could be expensive (2000 souls X your level)!!!

CONFIRMED! If you said "no" to the cat, but then pay to be absolved at the first bell tower, then you can talk again to the cat and choose "yes", unlocking the achievement... :-D

If you get to Alvina from the ladder near the Hydra DON'T join the covenent without killing all the humans in the forest 1st. There is an issue where one of the members somehow falls of a cliff and dies. The game awards you 2000 souls and registers this as you betraying the covenant.

This happened to me and then I went online to look for information and sure enough it was noted on a wiki.

SkyPawel - I freaked out over this too. You actually have to say yes twice before the discover achievement pops. So the THIRD yes or no question is when you actually get the join. I thought it was the 2nd time too..

So, I think I mistook the cheshire cat for a enemy and watched it disappear. Is it impossible to get it?

no. you have to pay off your sins in the bell tower after the gargoyles. There is a guy there. It's 500 X your soul level. Then you can go back to him and join.

^Thank god, I really appreciate the help. He just ran off and I was like... uh oh.

I suppose it doesn't resurrect killed NPC's? Again, let's pretend that I mistook them for enemies and killed one or two. I got so fed up of being killed I don't give anyone the time to attack me lol

I've been told there is a second entrance way into this section of the Darkroot Garden.
After defeating the Hydra in the Darkroot Basic, there is a secret entrance behind the waterfall near the Hydra's original location. Saves you 20,000 souls.

While talking to the cat I said no, and the cat wouldn't talk to me anymore. Thought it was a glitch so started pressing random buttons and accidentally hit him with a fire spell. He threatened me then disappeared. Any way I can still join his covenant?

Just a comment on your solution: You don't HAVE to join the covenant to get the achievement, since all the covenant achievements are just to "discover" them, not joining them. I'm a member of the Way of White covenant, and when the prompt came up "Do you wish to leave your current covenant to join this one?" the achievement popped for me, and I could answer "No". I could even talk to the cat again, being asked the same thing, so answering "No" to that perticular question doesn't piss her off.

Keep in mind that the first time you talk to her you have to answer "Yes" to her questions however, otherwise you'll piss her off. But to the final question, wether you want to join or not, you can safely answer "No".

Sorry if I'm confusing you, english is not my main language.

Not realizing that the cat was the way to the covenant I answered "no" to the first question posed by the cat and it won't bring up the dialogue option to join the covenant now. Any way to get this up now or am I going ot have to wait till my next play through?

and mine is glitched.... :( I got to the cat using alternative route (ladder near hydra), I did not pay 20k for the seal. I answered first question "yes". Now, the stupid cat keeps asking me if I want to join the covenant and achievement does not pop! (I keep answering no, I do not want to join). Is the 20k, that I did not pay, the problem?

When talking to Andre of Astora (the blacksmith) buy the item in his "buy" option called the "Crest of Artorias" for 20,000. If you are past Anor Londo Souls will come easy if you want to do this early in the game however I suggest not spending the souls from the Twin Gargoyles or the Moonlight Butterfly and using those.
After obtaining the crest head into the Darkroot Garden (through the room Andre is in) and continue down the linear path, slaying the ents if it pleases you, until you hit a giant door with a glowing circle in the middle. There is a fake wall to the left containing a bonfire if you desire to use it. Open the door with the crest and in the next area are NPC phantoms that will attack and if you are human Forest Hunters will invade you.
To avoid both simply stay undead and once you are past the door follow, run by, the cliff to the left until you enter a small ruined structure. As soon as you are inside talk to the cat on the windowsill and the NPC phantoms will all De-Agro.
She will tell you Artorias was a fairy tell reply "yes" she will then ask if you want to join also reply "yes" a screen will tell you hit yes one more time to join but it will abandon your current covenant, if your in any, note the trophy will unlock if you simply wait on that screen for a few seconds at which point you can click "no" if you don't actually want to leave your current covenant.

Heres a video detailing the covenants perks and your roll in it I don't talk any credit for this video please leave a like on his you-tuboo page if you wish to support the creator.

The Forest Hunters are the overseers of the forbidden area of the Darkroot Garden forest, right behind the sealed door.

How to Join:
Right past the sealed door in the forest you'll find two semi-destroyed buildings and in the first one (coming from the door) you'll find Alvina, a big grey cat in one of the windows. Simply talk to her and she'll offer you to join the covenant. To reach this place you can either buy the seal to unlock the big door from the Undead Parish Blacksmith for 20,000 souls or you can go the long way around, through the Hydra lake and up the stairs. Check the Art of Abysswalking trophy description for more information on how to get there.

Rewards for Joining/Ranking Up:
Upon joining you'll be rewarded with the Cat Covenant Ring which, when equipped, will automatically summon you to invade another player world when that person breaks into the forbidden forest area. Upon invading you must find the player and kill him, doing so will reward you with a random Titanite stone and will also give progress to ranking up inside the covenant. Whenever you kill an intruder go back to Alvina and talk to her to get your reward.

Covenant Ranks:

  • Killing 1 intruder will grant you a Divine Blessing consumable item.
  • Killing 3 intruders will grant you the Ring of Fog.
  • Killing 5 intruders makes Alvina tell you about the NPC Shiva.
  • Killing 10 intruders upgrade you to rank+1 but gives no reward.
  • Killing 30 intruders upgrade you to rank+2 but gives no reward.
  • Killing 80 intruders upgrade you to rank+3 but gives no reward.

Other Notes:
When you join this covenant all the humanoid enemies in the forest area will stop attacking you and if at any time you attack Alvina or any of them the covenant bond will be broken immediately. If any of the enemies accidentally fall off a cliff and die the bond will be broken as well.

Killing any invader through Alvina's summoning counts as a sin and allows the invaded person to indict your name to the Book of the Guilty if you kill them.

The NPC merchant Shiva Of The East only appears when you are a member of the Forest Hunter covenant. He can appear either right outside the building where Alvina is or below the water wheel in the swamp of Blightown. You do not need to have Alvina tell you about Shiva for him to appear, just being part of the covenant is enough.

Possible Bug Warning: There is a known bug in this area that may cause one of the humanoid enemies to get themselves killed or hurt right after you join the covenant, making you break the pledge. This can happen if you go talk to Alvina while any of them are chasing you so to be safe as soon as you join the covenant press start and go back to the main menu to reload your game so the enemies reset.
