How to unlock the The Dark Soul achievement in Dark Souls - Definitive Guide

*This guide contains spoilers, so turn away now if you don't want anything ruined!*

Ah..... I am sure a lot of you are thinking upon seeing a guide for a very straight forward achievement as kind of whoring it up for making solutions... and I suppose you're right. That doesn't mean I cannot make it helpful however.

The purpose of this guide is to tell you to pace yourself. I will list which achievements come through story and which are missable. I will also be helping you find materials for the weapon forging as well. Think of this as a very general overview with bits of helpful fluff, including some information you may not find in any of the other solutions folks have written.

I am NOT trying to undermine any of the hard work that went into the other guides. As such, I encourage you to read their solutions for extra information on some things. Please give these authors a "thumbs up" if it helped you!

This guide WILL contain spoilers ... if you need extra help with an achievement, I encourage you to click (or push for our mobile users) the achievements themselves, which should forward you to guides that other helpful people have written.

All in all, you will be looking at a total of 2 1/2 playthroughs. I believe it has to be on the same character, too. With that said, BE AWARE THAT ONCE YOU KILL THE FINAL BOSS, YOU ARE AT THE POINT OF NO RETURN. YOU WILL HAVE TO START A NEW GAME+

Rules of New Game+

-All souls, levels, and most of your inventory carry over. You lose embers, keys (except Master Key if you chose this item), a couple of items that act as keys.

-You receive up to 3x the amount of souls per enemy kill.

-All bonfires you have lit (and kindled) will retain their status.

-All enemies have a large increase to their health, damage output. Defenses are slightly boosted as well.

-All NPCs are reset. If you saved someone (or killed someone) they will act as if nothing has happened. You will have to locate them again.

-New Game++ (and subsequent jumps) are not as dramatic as your first New Game+ difficulty wise

ENJOY THIS GAME!

Since you do need to go through the game 2 1/2 times, I very strongly recommend not bothering trying to get every achievement possible your first playthrough. There are a couple of reasons for this.

1 - Titanite Slabs are rare. Some are nearly impossible to farm off of enemies, and as such it would be easier just to pick them up again on a New Game+

2 - Some items are rather hard to acquire enough of in one playthrough. Things like Souveneirs of Reprisals, Eyes of Death, and Sunlight Medals are in a very finite quantity unless you want to participate in covenant objectives.

3 - You WILL be going back and forth between covenants to gather all the needed miracles / pyromancies / weapons / etc. It is best to work on a couple per game. More info to follow on that.

4 - This game is a hell of a ride. It would be a shame to spoil everything for yourself the first time through if you are looking at guides. Regardless, for those that don't care about that I will be putting up a few recommendations throughout this guide for what should be gotten when.

WARNING!!
Do NOT consume yourself or feed any Fire Keeper / Boss souls to Kingseeker Frampt.

PROGRESSION ACHIEVEMENTS
This section shows the achievements that cannot be missed, and as such if you don't have them, you shouldn't feel the need to see what the requirements are. If you see the credits roll, all of these will be on your card)

The boss right before this achievement is one of the hardest in the game. While a strategy will not be posted here, I thought you would like to know that you only get one boss soul at the end of the fight, even though there are two enemies. Keep track of which boss you kill first and on your next playthrough, alternate the order you kill them. You need both souls for unique weapons.

OPTIONAL BOSS ACHIEVEMENTS
This section is short and sweet. While there are only two, you must defeat these foes not only for their respective achievements, but also for a miracle and a weapon.

FINAL BOSS ACHIEVEMENTS
There are two possible outcomes after killing the final boss. Coincidentally, there are two achievements related to these choices!

COVENANT ACHIEVEMENTS
This section is simply listing out the 9 covenants there are total throughout the game. Some are rather difficult to find. I would only recommend looking through this list on a New Game+ to avoid any potential spoilers. Note that you do not have to join these covenants to earn the achievement. Simply being asked to join will suffice. If you want to leave a covenant without completely tarnishing your reputation within it (and committing a sin in the process), speak to Oswald in the Belfry, right past the 2 Gargoyle bosses.

If you want to see Solaire of Astora's ultimate ending, I cannot stress this enough: Take this covenant and get your rating to +2 in it ON YOUR FIRST PLAYTHROUGH. While it is not needed for any achievement, this could make your life a lot easier later on down the road.
You need a total of 30 humanity to get to a +2 ranking. In the process of leveling this covenant up, you will receive a Pyromancy. If you want to know more about Solaire and how to help him, get to the very bottom of this guide. I will explain more there.

You must have a special ring and 10 Souvenir of reprisals for this covenant. You can find Souvenir of Reprisals in various places in the game. For more information, see the solution for "Prayer of a Maiden" (Miracle 09). If you kill one of the optional bosses (from above) you will lose access to this covenant. Leveling up the covenant to +1 awards you a miracle.

Dark SoulsCovenant: Gravelord ServantThe Covenant: Gravelord Servant achievement in Dark Souls worth 57 pointsDiscover Gravelord Servant covenant.

*If you have killed Gravelord Nito this covenant is impossible to join on your current game!*

You need 11 Eyes of Death for this one. You can farm them from the frogs in the Depths, or find them in various places throughout the game. I recommend this covenant on your second playthrough to help minimize farming. You will receive 2 miracles for leveling this covenant to +1

Dark SoulsSecret AchievementThe Secret Achievement achievement in Dark Souls worth 63 pointsContinue playing to unlock this secret achievement

Make sure you read the guide for this one! In addition, you need 10 sunlight medals and the soul of Gwyn the Firelord to get the 3 miracles offered here. More information can be found under the "Prayer of a Maiden" solution (Miracle 10,11,12). I recommend you wait for this covenant until your second playthrough.

Okay, this one is probably the most well hidden. As such, I really recommend you wait until Newgame+ on this one. If you want some really cool gear, bring a total of 30 humanity with you!

*requires Dark Ember -OR-
After you find the second bonfire in Anor Londo (past those hellish archers...), leave the room and go past the winding staircase. Kill the Silver Sword guard and open the door on the left hand side. There is a secret hidden in the fireplace. Once you go downstairs, you will see some chests. One of these is a mimic. Kill it and you will get an Occult Mace. If you don't care for your fully upgraded weapon, you can take it to a smith and have him downgrade it to a +5 Divine, making that craft that much easier.

Dark SoulsLightning WeaponThe Lightning Weapon achievement in Dark Souls worth 39 pointsAcquire best weapon through lightning reinforcement.

*requires Large Ember -OR-
After you successfully dodge the first boulder in Sen's Fortress, you will end up in a room that has another boulder following a rather zig zag pattern down it. Make your way to the very bottom of this room, and you will see a pit in the floor. There's a door to the left of this, and a mimcry is inside this room. Kill him to receive your lightning spear.

Dark SoulsEnchanted WeaponThe Enchanted Weapon achievement in Dark Souls worth 45 pointsAcquire best weapon through enchanted reinforcement.

*requires Enchanted Ember -OR-
There is a mimcry somewhere in the Duke's Archives that drops an Enchanted Falchion. I am terribly sorry I cannot pinpoint the exact one, but I will list off all the mimicrys in the area.
There is one mimcry in the first large library room. Take the stairs to the right, and work your way past the balcony outside. It is guarded by 2 or 3 of the crystallized hollows.
There is a couple of mimicrys in the area right before you go outside to the gardens. Kill all of them just to be on the safe side.
If you don't care for your fully upgraded weapon, you can take it to a smith and have him downgrade it to a +5 Magic, making that craft that much easier.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Titanite... all over the place.

Titanite Shards

Buy from Blacksmith Andre in Undead Parish for 800 souls each.
Buy from Crestfallen Merchant in Sen's Fortress for 800 souls. In Sen's Fortress, proceed til you get outside. You will have to cross a narrow bridge after avoiding a few very, very large firebombs. If you look, the left side of this bridge is busted up. Just run jump over the gap, and this guy is in the tower there, moping about. Various enemies also drop this.

Large Titanite Shards

Buy from Crestfallen Merchant for 4,000 souls.
Put on your best poison resist gear and kill slugs out in the Swamps of Blight Town. The drop rate is pretty good, but I recommend using Rusted Iron ring and the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring.

Green Titanite Shards

Kill Slugs out in the swamps still :)
You can get these off of the slimes in the depths too. A great farm spot is right outside the bonfire door.

Titanite Chunks and their color variants:

I recommend getting Regular chunks off of the black knights right outside of the last boss' room. You are guaranteed at least 2 per run.

Red - You can also get these off of the black knights outside the last boss' room. Chaos Eaters in Lost Izalith also drop them, but it's rare.

White - Black Knights again! You can also get these off of the skeleton towers in the Tomb of the Giants

Blue - Black knights win the day again! You can also farm these off of the golems in the gardens, right before the Crystal Cave.

Titanite Slabs

These are rather elusive. Here is a couple of places you can get them.

Regular Slabs - One can be gotten by killing the Stray Demon in the Undead Asylum. Go to the room where you killed your first boss, and the floor will crumble, leading to another fight. You can also get one by following Seigmeyer's quest line. I will go more into detail about that later. Wraiths in New Londo ruins also drop these, but it is stupid rare.

Red Slab - In Lost Izalith, there's a room with a few Chaos Eaters in a pit. If you jump down the pit with them, there's a chest down there with the slab in it. You will have to orient yourself to where you are facing the direction you came in. Walk around a pit in the floor and look for a narrow corridor. The chest is at the end of this.

White Slab - In the room right before Nito, there are a few Pinwheel servants and a lot of undead babies. If you look around, you will see a ledge that you can roll onto. The slab is down this part. It is on the side that the fog wall is on, near the top of the room.

Blue Slab - In the Crystal Cave, there is a part where you have to hop down onto an invisible ledge. If you look behind you, you should see several geckos scurry away. In any case, face away from where you need to go and you will see a corpse with an item.... pay close attention to the crystals hitting the floor, since the path does twist on you. Once you make it over, claim your Blue Slab as your prize.

But What about Seigmeyer?!

(The beginning of this was pulled from a different solution I wrote)

-Find Seigmeyer of Catalina outside of Sen's Fortress before the doors open. Speak with him until all dialogue is exhausted.
-When you go through Sen's Fortress later, Seigmeyer is outside near where you see your first boulder. Jump down to him, and listen to him lament about the boulders. Afterwards, change the boulder trap's direction to elsewhere (it's a large mechanism. Cannot miss it).
-In Anor Londo, you will find Seigmeyer again. To reach him, go through the castle until you climb a small set of winding steps. You will be on a rooftop, and there will be a silver knight immediately in front of you. Kill him and go down the flight of steps he guards. Talk to Seigmeyer and listen to him cry about the silver knights in the next room. Clear the room out and talk to him again for a reward.
-Head back to Firelink Shrine and talk to Seigmeyer by the bonfire. Answer "Yes" to his question. You will be given a miracle. Exhaust all other speech.
-Go to the gardens in the Duke's Archives... you will see a large amber golem wandering about. Kill it to release Seigmeyer's daughter, Seiglinde. She will thank you. Kill all the other golems in the gardens, or else she won't leave. Once you have done this, you can find her at Firelink Shrine.
-Return to Firelink and Seiglinde will ask of her father. Answer "Yes" to her question and exhaust all dialogue.
-Head down to Blight Town, near where all the leeches are. You will find Seigmeyer..... sleeping. Wake him up and give him 3x Purple Moss clumps. He will thank you and give you an item. Exhaust all dialogue.
-In lost Izalith, in the same place you found the red titanite slab, Seigmeyer will be there, looking out over the Chaos Eaters. Do NOT kill all the Eaters, but instead pick them off til there is one left. Using a bow works well for this.
-Talk to Seigmeyer, and he will jump down into the pit. Help him kill the last one, and quickly. If the fight ends and Seigmeyer has less than 50% health, he gives you a ring and his arc concludes.

If he has over 50% health, he will fall asleep.... again. Continue with the steps.
-Return to Firelink and speak to his Daughter. Answer "Yes" again to her question.
-Head to the first bonfire in Ash Lake. You will find Father and Daughter reunited. You will be awarded a very rare Titanite Slab for all your troubles.

But what about Solaire?!

Unfortunately, he is bugged. You can only complete his quest line on a brand new game. On other playthroughs, he cannot give you the White Soapstone, and as such you cannot progress his story.

Here is how to get it right the first time :)
-You will find Solaire right before the bridge that the red drake guards, right after the Taurus Demon fight. Talk to him and accept the White Soapstone. Exhaust all dialogue.
-When you are in Anor Londo, you will find him by the second bonfire. Talk with him again until dialogue is exhausted.
-Return to where you first met him and attempt to cross the bridge. Getting across successfully will let you find him by an altar outside of the room. Speak with him there.
-After the Centipede Boss in the Demon Ruins, you will find him to the left of the bonfire right before that huge lava field. Speak with him again and exhaust all conversation.
-Warp to the Daughter of Chaos covenant BEFORE entering Lost Izalith and if you haven't, join it and level it to +2 using 30 humanity. Leave the room and take the elevator down. Go back to the room where you fought the Demon Firesage and head backwards towards the second bonfire in Demon Ruins. Look for a loooong corridor on your left (it's right outside the boss room) and head to the end. Kill all the bugs you find on the way. Open the way (requires +2 in Daughter of Chaos covenant) and kill all the bugs on the other side. There should be 9 total. Only AFTER doing this, can you enter Lost Izalith safely. Enter the city and use a homeward bone to return to the Daughter of Chaos covenant. Go back to the shortcut and you should find Solaire there.
- If you do all of this correctly, you can summon him to help you in the last boss fight :)

WOW. Longest solution EVER. Comments, questions? I wanna hear them!
Parts of this guide was pulled from the official guide (Seigmeyer), the rest was from personal experience.

Edited a couple of typos, errors, and further clarified a couple of things.

This all seems very overwhelming. Is it? I've just installed the game, and I'm about to play, but I want to keep this guide up as reference. Will I need to keep a constant eye on it to avoid missing anything, or will I have sufficient knowledge in-game to tell when a missable achievement will happen?

It seems like a fantastic guide, too! :D

Enjoying the hell out of this game... at least until the next time I need to fight something or a Boss... Or the Four Kings.... Or Until NG+.....
Well at least I think it is good until I play it...
Or the Tomb of the Giants... Or screwing up Solaire's Story... Which I think I have last night... But I don't know when it counts as going to Lost Izaleth (spelling?)
Anyways... Awesome guide even though it didn't benefit me much. I totally frigged up Seigmeyer's part and walked away when he asked me the Yes or No about the gate....

AWESOME NONETHELESS!

Just a heads up you can buy the master key from patches later in the game. So if you didn't pick that for your starting blessing be sure to grab it and save yourself some time.

I just wanted to add, that you can also farm Titanite Chunks in the hall before Smough and Ornstein.
With max discovery they drop quite often (for a rare item).

As for the walkthrough thing... well if someone DOES submit one, I wonder if they will feel silly upon seeing this achievement solution and finding a 70% complete guide lol. Maybe I will do that in the future.

For the warrior of sunlight covenant spells: Do the 10 sunlight medals and the Soul Of Gwyn have to be offered in the same playthrough/covenant join or doesn't it matter to spend 10 sunlight medals in my NG and spend the Soul Of Gwyn in my NG+ later?
0
0
By MosesChristus on 24 Nov 2011 12:03
While I cannot confirm it, if you spent 10 medals to get a +1 by your covenant rank, you should be able to use the Soul on your next playthrough as long as you dont abandon the covenant. If you havent spent the medals yet and want to play it safe, save em for Play 2. Anyone have a definitive answer on this?

Ugh so I screwed up and honestly answered Seiglinde at Firelink that I hadn't seen her father, since rescuing her not sixty seconds ago. This game can be so obtuse sometimes. In fact I would say that chain is flat out broken, since you have to answer that "yes" you have seen him again before you get a chance to. Whatever, I'll get it on PT2 I guess...

The combination of one autosave and tons of missable stuff is extremely player unfriendly, and not in a fun "difficult" way, just annoying. Great guide though, nice job elucidating some of the most annoying missable elements while minimizing spoilers. Wish I would have done a better job reading.

BTW my favorite is when an NPC asks a question with a double or triple negative and then the game prompts you for a yes or no.

"Wouldst thou not lack objection to [game-altering decision]?"

Ummm.... Yes?

I made my usual checklist for tracking progress ... as long as you don't read ahead it's relatively spoiler free too. Download a copy and mark things off as you go ... covers all the main collectibles and paths to cover during the game.

It does assume you pick up the master key as your starting item, because, well - why wouldn't you? :)

I just completed this game, and it was an incredibly rewarding experience. I wanted to post these video guides (thanks to my buddy Xonevant at squareonegames) which are incredibly detailed and will walk you through every step of the way toward getting 100% completion in the game! This is a full 100% walkthrough with commentary and should help players of pretty much any experience level get through the game and complete all of the achievements.

I didn't make them, my friend did, but I can definitely vouch for them. The videos are very detailed and do all the work of letting you know how many of items like titanite slabs/chunks you need and where/how much to farm in certain places. If you send him a private message through Youtube, he will send you a text version as well if you'd like.
