The guild offers ability unlocks and upgrades for heroes. In order to fully upgrade it you need to level instructor mastery to level 4 and training regimen to level 5.
To accomplish both of these will require a total of 118 portraits and 302 crests. While the heirloom requirement is lower than most buildings this is offset by the fact that you can only stack portraits to a max of 3. After the blacksmith, the guild should be your biggest priority in fully upgrading. While portraits can be found in any dungeon, they are most plentiful in the Warrens.
The random town event "Labour Force", which offers a free upgrade to any building can be an effective way to complete instructor mastery level 4's high cost of 33 portraits and 84 crests if you feel like waiting for it as the upgrade from level 4 to 5 skills for most heroes is marginal. You can change the frequency of random events in the game's menu but just keep in mind this may impact you if you're going for the default setting achievement.
