How to unlock the Restored to its former glory... achievement in Darkest Dungeon - Definitive Guide

In order to fully upgrade the entire town you need to purchase every single upgrade for every building. This consists of the Abbey, Sanitarium, Stage Coach, Blacksmith, Guild, Tavern, Nomad Wagon, and Survivalist's Camp.

Abbey: 240 busts 282 crests
Sanitarium: 240 busts 154 crests
Stage Coach: 144 deeds 54 busts 222 crests
Blacksmith: 273 deeds 301 crests
Guild: 118 portraits 302 crests
Tavern: 123 portraits 249 crests
Nomad Wagon: 273 crests
Survivalist's Camp: 268 crests

The heirloom grand total is: 534 busts, 417 deeds, 241 portraits, and 2051 crests. If you have Crimson Court DLC enabled you'll also need 750 crests for the Red Hook achievement. If you want to complete the game and hit the 104 week achievement at around the same time that means you'll need to average hauling in 5.1 busts, 4 deeds, 2.3 portraits, and 19.7 crests(27 with Hook) each week.

If you're playing with the Crimson Court DLC a good way to make this easier on yourself is by building the Bank district(55 portraits) with one of your first two blueprints from the Ruins. Use Antiquarians to help build up a cash reserve of ~200k and with 5% interest this results in 10k free gold each week, which is enough to cover all of your expeditions and heals. Once you no longer have to worry about gold this will allow you to prioritize heirlooms.

Using the crimson court, you can go into the courtyard on any expedition (blood run, boss run whatever) and use shovels to break potted plants, these always guarantee almost 2 full stacks of random heirlooms that can be taken to the hamlet. On boss runs in the courtyard, you can even leave the dungeon and come back if your inventory is full with no cost to your characters stress (although you lose an invitation). NOTE: the game requires you to upgrade ALL of the districts if you have them on in that playthrough to pop the achievement, I redid a vanilla run to get mine to pop.

You can upgrade most buildings in town.
Upgrading any building works the same:

  • Go to the building you want to upgrade; see picture below this list for locations
  • Once in the building press (and hold) to see the upgrade menu
  • Select the upgrade you wish to purchase and confirm by pressing (you’ll pay and so lose Heirlooms for upgrades).

Purchase all possible Upgrades for each building and the trophy to pop.

To improve and develop the city, “family heirlooms” taken from the dungeons are needed. Valuables are also given out for completing tasks. Excess unnecessary valuables can be exchanged for needed ones.
To completely improve the city, you need to improve the following buildings:
blacksmith, guild, tavern, monastery, stagecoach, gypsy tent, hospital, forester's tent

Values needed to improve buildings:
The forge is improved with the help of bills of sale and coats of arms.
The guild is improved with portraits and coats of arms.
The inn is upgraded with portraits and coats of arms.
The monastery is improved with busts and coats of arms.
The stagecoach is upgraded with bills of sale and coats of arms.
The wagon is improved with a large number of coats of arms.
The hospital is improved with the help of busts and coats of arms.
The forester improves with the help of coats of arms.

Sometimes the event "One free building upgrade" appears, and it appears more than 2-3 times per game. So leave especially expensive improvements for last, perhaps improve them for free.
