How to unlock the The abbey my Ancestor once knew... achievement in Darkest Dungeon - Definitive Guide
In order to fully upgrade the Abbey's 3 tiers(cloister, transept, and penance chamber) you will need a grand total of 240 busts and 282 crests. Busts are most commonly found in the Ruins relative to the other heirlooms.
As you'll never need 9 available stress relief slots at once this will be one of the last buildings you upgrade, solely for the achievement. You may actually want to just reload your save after popping this(and fully upgraded town) to use the heirlooms for something more useful.

Bugged for me. I think there's been some issues since the Colour of Madness DLC came out with the associated patch. This didn't pop for me, but ridiculously, the fully upgrade the village one did. Will file a bug report.

As with most buildings in town, you can upgrade the abbey using your Heirlooms.
You’ll need 240 Busts and 282 Crests to fully upgrade the Abbey.
There are 3 different perk to upgrade, with 6 upgrades each (so 18 in total) see table below for details
To upgrade the building;
- Go to the abbey (church like building in the top middle of the Town, see picture below this list for location)
- once in the Abbey press (and hold) to see the upgrade menu
- Select the upgrade you which to purchase and confirm by pressing (you’ll pay and so lose Heirlooms for upgrades).
- Purchase all possible Upgrades for the trophy to pop.
if the abbey is still closed you need to play more quests to unlock it.
You'll need (to progress) this trophy before you can finish
Restored to its former glory...

To improve you will need busts and coats of arms.
