How to unlock the The tavern my Ancestor once saw... achievement in Darkest Dungeon - Definitive Guide
To fully upgrade the bar, gambling hall, and brothel will require a grand total of 123 portraits and 249 crests(41/83 each).
The hardest part is simply getting all the portraits back home as they can only be stacked to a maximum of 3. Another issue is the fact that the portrait requirement is shared by the guild, and will be a much bigger priority to upgrade than the tavern.
Be aware that although the tavern is cheaper than the abbey for stress removal, the tavern carries higher risks of negative consequences of hero activities(eg. syphilis from the brothel, losing very rare trinkets gambling).

As with most buildings in town, you can upgrade the Tavern using your Heirlooms.
You’ll need 123 portraits and 240 Crests to fully upgrade the tavern.
There are 3 different perks to upgrade, each with 6 upgrades (so 18 in total), see table below for details
To upgrade the building:
- Go to the tavern (building with the beer sign next to the wagon on the left, see picture below this list for location)
- Once in the tavern press (and hold) to see the upgrade menu
- Select the upgrade you wish to purchase and confirm by pressing (you’ll pay and so lose Heirlooms for upgrades).
- Purchase all possible Upgrades for the trophy to pop.
if the tavern is still closed you need to play more quests to unlock it.
You'll need (to progress) this trophy before you can finish
