How to unlock the Like a Noss achievement in Darksiders II - Definitive Guide

This achievement is for a side quest that is given to you by Thane, one of the makers located at Tri-Forge. You will spot him as you first arrive, either drinking or striking large pieces of wood with his weapon.

Speaking to him at first will yield only a challenge from the gruff maker. If you are lower than Level 5 (roughly) then I suggest you level up a bit. Your first goal will be to defeat him in combat.

Assuming you are strong enough to face him, he will end the fight after 3/4 of his life bar is gone and speak to you. This will now allow you to take the quests for finding the four bosses Thane wants "taken care of".

These bosses can be quite challenging and I recommend you level up before taking them on. I'll detail each boss below. Please note that I fought all of these creatures on Apocalyptic difficulty.

Gorewood - A large treeish creature that has several mid range attacks and a few devastating up close attacks.
Level Recommendation - Any level above 8 on normal, 10 or higher on Apocalyptic.
Gorewood can be found underneath the Weeping Crag area and is a little tricky to find. In this area you will need to climb the outside walls and proceed inside the dungeon. Once inside you will find a skeleton key to open the door out front. Return there and unlock the door. Proceed onwards and to the bottom of this mini-dungeon and you will come to a lake. Swim down the lake and under the land masses to emerge in a little cove on the opposite side. Once you approach the large area the battle will begin. Dodging is key to surviving this encounter and you want to stay close enough to Gorewood to attack after it does, but you need to watch out for its ranged attacks as you can get snared and Gorewood will inflict some big damage. I summoned fire ghouls to help me fight and the added fire damage was a real helper. Once Gorewood finally falls, you will be rewarded with a unique Maul, the Gorewood Maul (Level 10).

Bheithir - A large, fire covered bird that deals some decent damage but only has a few attacks.
Level Recommendation - Level 13 or higher on any difficulty.
I actually found Bleithir to be the easiest of the 4 creatures. This large bird is located in the Nook dungeon; however the battle is ONLY accessible after you receive Deathgrip (the hookshot). If you have already cleared the dungeon you can take the first right door and follow it. Once you hit the stream of lava in the corner and another door you have arrived. You will actually see Bleithir flying slowly round this large room however the fight won't begin until you Deathgrip across the chasm to the narrow platform out in the lava. Engaging Bleithir isn't too hard, you can mostly rely on Redemption although the fight does tend to drag on following that method. Bleithir will make a grand entrance on one end of the platform, then will spew fire breath out across it. He will then charge at you. To avoid this, you can either time a roll to get behind him (and suffer some fire damage) or you can hang off one of the ledges, and then shimmy behind him and attack. Falling into the lava is a sure way to avoid his attacks, however every time you do you have to wait roughly 30 seconds for the boss to fly around and land again (rather annoying). Once you finally defeat him you will be rewarded with a unique pair of Scythe's, Bleithir's Talons (Level 15).

Achidna - The spider companion of Basileus with some strong lightning and short range attacks.
Level Recommendation - Level 15 or higher on normal, 16 or higher on Apocalyptic.
You will actually encounter Achidna during the main questline so no need to actively seek her out. You encounter her along with Basileus (the third Death Lord the King of Bones wants you to recover). She is located at the end of the Psychameron. Please check out the achievement guide for "The Court of Bones" for more information.

Argul (The Deposed King) - The strongest of the 4, the former King of the Dead, covered in ice and chock full of devastatingly powerful attacks.
Level Recommendation - Level 16 or higher on normal, 17 or higher on Apocalyptic.
This guy is a royal pain but well get into that shortly. He is located in the Lair of the Deposed King in the Kingdom of the Dead. Finding his room is fairly easy as the dungeon is pretty small, when you hit a large elevator that takes you down into an icy lower room, you're right at his front door. As you approach the frozen king he will break out of his ice prison. Be ready as he immediately attacks with a strong stroke of his mace. When he does these heavy attacks his mace gets stuck in the ground for a few seconds, this is your one chance to move in for the attack. Once he gets unstuck however, move to a safe distance and be ready to dodge like mad. If he does hit you with that heavy attack and you survive, you will be frozen and will rapidly need to press B to break free and stop taking cold damage. His attacks are fast and strong so be on the lookout and wait for him to get his weapon stuck. After his life bar drops to half he will add another attack to his repertoire, he will do a fast spin attack which is very hard to dodge. I recommend when he preps this attack to get to the other side of the room and wait for his usual opening. After a tough battle you will eventually kill him and gain a legendary Scepter, The Scepter of the Deposed King (Level 20).

Finally after having bested these 4 creatures, return to Thane and after you individually report that each creature has been disposed of, the achievement will unlock.

Thanks for the tips ImaginaryRuins. I had a buddy that stated that Gorewood was easy to handle as well at that Level on normal difficulty, thanks for confirming it and other suggestions. I didn't get the instant kill option with Bleithir, good to know somebody did :)

Hmm I just stumbled into The Lair of the Deposed King at level 12, I am guessing that I should just turn around and come back later. Thanks for the tips!

munchmagic86 - Actually I just spoke to someone who beat the King at Level 10. He said it was a VERY long fight (like 20 or more minutes) but with timing and persistence he pulled it off. I guess if you really want this achievement as early as possible you could do the same with all the bosses outside of Achidna (story related) and Bleithir (need the Deathgrip to reach).

I beat the Deposed King at level 12. It required a ton of dodging and I had some amped up Possessed Gauntlets. I made sure I had enough health potions and wrath potions. It took me about 3-4 tries, but I eventually got it.

As for Bhethir, I had a glitch occur during that fight. I had Bhethir down to half health and hit it near the edge of the walkway and it went straight to the defeated. Cutscene. Craziest thing ever.

I think my achievement glitched on me. I've defeated all 4 of the enemies and spoken to Thane after each battle, but it didn't pop for me. I tried quitting to the dash board also but that didn't work either. Has anyone else had this problem? +1 on the solution though

I haven't (luckily) had that glitch, but I have had a bevy of others. The game has frozen on me 8 times, boss health bars don't read correctly, quest markers not showing up, etc.

Ando0420 - We've actually been finding that a lot of the games achievements can randomly be glitched. I've had 2 people comment that they didn't get the Mad Queen achievement after speaking to Lillith near the end of the game. Hopefully Vigil is aware of these issues and working on a fix for them.

After I defeated Gorewood the quest marker and indeed quest disappeared. I was confused since Thane had no more dialogue so I just went to the Nook to found the next boss. May be worth noting that you don't necessarily need this quest active to continue it.

For Gorewood, if a player had Chaos Fang by completing Darksiders 1, he can be challenged right away as his attack pattern is quite easy to read.

For Bheithir I also used Redemption and I wad allowed to do an instant kill when its HP bar is still half full.

I challenged the Deposed King at only level 16 so he could kill me in just 2 hits, but this fight actually is more about reading attack pattern than using brute force, so just attack carefully and do not rush, and victory will come.

Achidna is by comparison like a joke

Once you reach Tri-Stone you can find Thane located at the training dummies to the right of the entrance. Speak with him and you will be able to challenge him to a fight. Once you defeat him he will offer you a quest to slay four different creatures, in order to prove yourself as the “true reaper”. The creatures, their levels and their locations can be seen below. They are also in the order which you will be able to first attempt them in the game progression:

  • Gorewood (Level 10) - Located in the Weeping Crag
Go to the door with a purple Skeleton on it then turn to your right. Climb across and make your way through the section until you locate the Skeleton key in a chest. Return to the Skeleton Key door and unlock it. You will then come to a section with a long hallway with no ground, only water. Dive into the water and find the tunnel hidden within it. You will eventually come out into a grove where Gorewood is.
  • Bheithir (Level 15)- Located in the Nook
A giant dragon/balrog looking creature that circles the lower lava area in the Nook. You will not be able to engage him until you have collected Deathgrip from The Foundry. Once you do you can come back and cross to the bridge, then shoot him with Redemption to make him land.
  • Deposed King/Argul (Level 20) - Located in the Lair of the Deposed King
The third and highest level creature you can fight is the Deposed King. You will come across his lair just after you enter the Kingdom of the Dead. However, he is very powerful and should be killed closer to level 20. There is no real incentive for killing it much earlier than that, unless you like to challenge yourself. I would advise you to come back once he is the last remaining Noss creature.
  • Achidna - (Level 15) - Located in Psychomera
Giant spider boss that is assisting Basileus, one of the Dead Lords. You will have to kill her to complete the main story quest “Court of Bones”, making it impossible to miss if you complete the game. You will also unlock the Court of Bones trophy after she dies.

I completed these quests when I was at level 17, the problems were only with the last Deposed King, the rest were weaker.

1.Gorewood - located in the location with Vulgrim in Weeping Crag, you need to climb the ledge to the door, go inside and find a flooded corridor there, after passing it we find ourselves in a beautiful hall with an ugly Gorewood. He constantly puts down roots, which it is better not to get caught in, so try to jump around him and hit him.

2.Baetir - a bat bursting with flame. Lives in Nook, you can find her by going through the corridor with lava, and you can only get there with the Death Grip. It breathes fire and hits hard, but being pumped up I didn’t feel it at all.

3. The spider Akrida is the plot boss, killed at the same time as Basileus. Jumping and area attack.

4. The most difficult, Deposed King, this guy is strong and problematic. You can’t miss him, he has his own dungeon in the Lands of the Dead. He has some very bad attacks that can take out a huge amount of HP. Remember, never stand under the blow of his hammer, a powerful blow will encase you in ice, which will also take away your HP, keep your distance, beware of the turntable, it covers such a huge distance. Hit him only when his hammer is stuck in the ground, otherwise he can reflect your blow and counterattack; here it is important to dodge to the side in time. For those who use ghouls, they are useless here, the king will kill them with one blow. I went through with ghouls and crows, but I advise you to change your skills to combat ones.

It is very easy to defeat the king if you know the following: when he swings to strike with a hammer (no matter for a single strong blow or a series of regular strikes), you must dodge not to the side, but towards his feet, because there his hammer is not enough. And then everything is as in the tips above, the hammer is stuck - hit it in the face, repeat until ready.

I'll correct the hint slightly. The king who has not been laid down is not so frightened. All you need to defeat him in 2 minutes is: level 21-22, Scythes with crit +300% (given for finding all the stones), a fast second weapon with life restoration skills, pumped up ghouls (we upgrade all skills except the diversion yourself (level 1 is enough)), a filled Reaper scale (useful at the very end).

The tactics are simple. We spam the ghouls, when the mana runs out, we beat the “king” while his weapon is stuck in the ice (thus restoring mana/health - whichever is more necessary at the moment), spam the ghouls again, and so on until victory. If suddenly the bottles run out and the BOSS is still alive, we turn into a reaper and finish him off.

In Trikamna there will be one of the creators named Thane, he will have a task to fight him and defeat him, after you defeat him, he will give a new sidequest in which he will name the creatures that need to be found and defeated
