How to unlock the The True Horseman achievement in Darksiders - Definitive Guide

Fairly straightforward, this requires you to beat the game on Apocalyptic difficulty.

The main difference between this and Normal difficulty is that hits inflict a lot more damage. Enemies (including bosses) still seem to have roughly the same amount of health from what I observed. However, if you've already played the game a bit and are used to the combat (particularly dashing, knowing what weapon to use when, and knowing when to block/counter), this helps a lot.

You will also find this easier if you acquire wrath cores and lifestones as early as possible in the game.

Note that if you have won the Abyssal Armour on a previous playthrough, you will be given the option of carrying this over when starting a new game (this is the only item that you have the opportunity to carry over). If you choose to do this, Apocalyptic difficulty is actually not much tougher than Normal - the Abyssal Armour substantially reduces damage taken and also leeches health from enemies when you damage them.

I'm currently doing this and I found the Flipsaw and Piercing Strike are two moves you will want to buy from Vulgrim as early as possible. The Flipsaw deals good damage to most enemies and the Piercing Strike allows you to dash strike towards an enemy.

Are the difficulty achievements stackable?

Yes the difficulty achievements do stack (if you beat the game on apocalyptic in your first play you will get the achievements for normal and easy as well, similarly beating the game on normal will also get you the achievement for easy).

This game can be found very difficult in the beginning, especially the first bosses. But as you advance through the game, you get alot more experience, and I myself nailed the last bosses on my first attempts after struggling with the first ones.

This really wasn't that difficult. Really enjoyed playing it.

I jumped from norm to apoc and roared through with the Armour. Enjoyed the hell out of this game. The 180 arc move and the upgrades for Crossblade and Misery help but the 2 mentioned by Medigo ^ are must-haves. Join the True Horsemen.

I've not done this yet myself, but the suggestions from MedigoFlare and question from Lodoss Inderos should probably be explained or added into your solution, other than that, nice guide.

Great guide, and let me just add: I am finding my APOCALYPTIC run-through much easier than even the easy run I did - and all because of the Abyssal Armor.

And, seriously, I am getting no life-stone pieces or any collectables here: doing nothing but a speed run and no one can touch me. It's actually quite comical.

Yeah, the Abyssal Armor makes the Apocalyptic playthrough no more difficult than normal, perhaps even a bit easier considering any landed hits with any weapon regenerates health while wearing it.

It took me about 9 hours to roll through Apocalyptic and that was doing nothing more than beelining from objective to objective and picking up nothing that wasn't directly in my way. I ended up facing The Destroyer with 9 life runes and 6 wrath cores.

It's been a while, but if I recall correctly you start a new game. The armor carries over.

If you're thinking about doing Apocalyptic in your first playthrough, be advised that this is going to be tough. You can make life much easier on yourself by completing the game on easy or normal first and collecting the Abyssal Armour which you will be able to use from the beginning of your second playthrough.

I'm currently 3/4 of the way through Apocalyptic and I'm finding these are the rules to live by.

Tips for success:

- Use the Abyssal Armour! -
This armour gives you you huge damage protection and life steal as you attack enemies. Granted, you'll need to be on a second playthrough to use this, but it's worth it. Ensure you select the correct option when starting the second playthrough and don't worry if the armour disappears during cut scenes.

- Collect life and wrath shards as early as possible! -
I know a lot of people like to save collectibles until they've completed a game, but it's best at least to use a guide to ensure you've always got the highest possible health. This is especially important early in the game.

- Use Stoneskin! -
Stoneskin is perhaps the most useful of the four wrath abilities. Levelled up, it gives very good damage protection and a boost to the damage you deal. It's not flashy, but it's great for boss fights and prolonged battles as it lasts for a long time with low wrath consumption. If pure offence is more your thing, check out Affliction, but its value is often limited against bosses and it doesn't appear until later in the game.

- Know your weapons! -
Most people will want to stick to the Scythe and Tremor Gauntlet for levelling purposes. That's fine, but realise your scythe is best used when facing a large amount of weak enemies and your gauntlet is great against tougher enemies and when close to cliffs (knock the enemies over the edge). The RB+Y upgrade is essential for both weapons, so buy those early. It's quite alright to only use Chaoseater when you need to build up your chaos meter - there's little benefit to levelling it up, as you'll get a new sword later in the game.

- Equip the right bonuses! -
Slotted enhancements that improve defence, damage and weapon experience are the most useful. Remember that some enhancements will provide a passive bonus by simply having them in your inventory. War's Glory and Weapon Master are good examples. Know that some enhancements are better paired with certain weapons. Further reading, but risk of spoilers, here: http://darksiders.wikia.com/wiki/Legendary_Enhancement and here: http://darksiders.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Enhancements.

- Learn to evade! -
Blocking is useful, but many times you'll find that enemies are still able to damage you. Getting a few hits in and then dashing away (direction + RB) is a much more effective way of avoiding damage. Most enemies have a pattern to their attacks, so if you're taking a lot of damage, change your timing. This is especially true for the bosses.

- Don't use green and yellow chests until you need them! -
Regular green and yellow glowing chests contain health and wrath. If you're already almost full, the contents of those chests will be wasted. You will be required to revisit or backtrack to many areas of the game and these chests are usually positioned near the site of a big fight - if you're good for health and see these chests, be prepared for a fight when you return to his area. Of course, don't confuse these with green and yellow chests with black magic swirling around them - these are life and wrath shards and should be collected as soon as possible, along with blue chests and bone chests.

- Save your Chaos Form for when you *really* need it! -
Often I find I'll go into a big fight and trigger Chaos Form, only to have it run out too early or have it cancelled by a cut scene. Attempt all battles with your regular weapons first and use the chaos as a last resort. Chaos Form is useless against most bosses, so don't even bother.

On Apoc, I've found a lot of enemies that knock off multiple bars for one hit, when in challenge rooms, walking/dashing away and charging the boomerang secondary weapon, you know it's working for the yellow souls, saving the Chaos form for the big beasts (too often 2 hit KO'd by those things.. I don't have the armour yet, nor do I have stone skin)

Beat the game on Apocalyptic. Unlocking this trophy will also unlock Balance Restored, and You Call This Easy?, as well.

After beating the game on this difficulty, you will automatically receive all the achievements for the EASY and NORMAL difficulty. And if it’s difficult for you, then go through the EASY, collect the entire Abyssal Armor set and with it you can easily beat it on this difficulty.
