How to unlock the Survivor James achievement in Dead Age - Definitive Guide
After the radio tower quest, providing you succeeded you will get a choice whether to rescue a lone female (nurse) or a group, if you choose the group and succeed then you will get this achievement.
During the course of a playthrough of Dead Age, you'll be able to get everyone in game to join your camp minus three people (so you can get max nine of twelve characters in one run). Of the missing three, two will be from the "random pool" (listed below) and one will either be James or Mary (when you do the mission to save one, the mission to save the other disappears.
The list of random characters is as follows: Bill, Hank, Lydia, Jamal, Jennifer, Larissa, Liz
Fortunately, James is not one of these random characters, and so long as you choose her mission over Mary's, he will be obtainable in every playthrough.
James
On Day 17, you'll get a choice of missions that can only be done on this exact day (aka they have a one day time limit). As such, you can only do one of the two. One asks you to rescue a lone survivor in the Woods, the other asks you to rescue a group of survivors on the Highway. The former will allow you to add Mary to your camp, the other will allow you to add James to your camp. Since obviously you cannot get both characters, you'll only be able to get each of their related achievements in two different playthroughs
Also, you'll need some sort of healing item in your medical gear menu for both quests, so be sure either to save one, buy one at the store, or find one and hold it for this quest.
Choose to head to the Highway Day. You'll reach the survivors at Area 10, but discover they have already been massacred. You can now "follow the trail" of the killers to Area 14, where you'll have to fight some armed men to release James, who will then return to camp with you.
The next day, Trish will ask you to talk to James in the Cantina. Before you do that though, head into your Medical Gear menu, highlight James on the left-side of the notebook, and use a medkit or other healing item on James. This will change his status from Injured to OK and allow you to properly talk to him. At this point you should unlock this achievement.
NOTE: Not required for the quest, but the following day, James will give you a quest to kill the corrupt soldiers in Area 20 of Highway, Day. Do so with James in your party, and you'll ensure James as a full-fledged member of your camp (aka he won't abandon you).
