A "wave" is a fight in which you need to defeat two or more rounds of enemies in one area.
Waves occur for two reasons:
1.) You encounter a random survivor who will fight with you for one area. Keeping this survivor alive for the round will give you a bonus award. This happens at random.
2.) Quests will often end with a multi-wave fight. Many quests will occur every playthrough so this can be controlled.
Even without a single "Random Survivor" wave, if you're completing quests (like you should) you should have this unlocked by Day 34, though you'll likely unlock this much sooner.
If you're doing quests, you'll unlock this achievement naturally, as many quests along the way of getting a Successful ending have multiple wave fights in them.
