How to unlock the School of hard knocks achievement in Dead Island Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide

Solution update 21/3/17: Added a second leveling up method as people have mentioned that the first method doesn't work with 'Sam B' Second method works with all characters. Also added a warning to players with maxed out RAGE duration.

Warning! (depending on your character strength) if you max out the duration meter in the RAGE skill tree, you mite end up killing Ryder too quickly, causing you to earn the Xp after the cut scene and not before. Which means for anyone passing from level 49-50 will not earn thier achievement as the game won't register that you hit level 50. From what Iv seen , it's only more common with players using Xian.
If you haven't maxed out the rage meter then only level it up twice and no further then that.
If you have already maxed it out it's still possible to earn the achievement. You'll want to firstly make a back up save when you hit level 49. Then progress through lvl 49 using the method below until your Xp bar is near enough full. Then either proceed to kill Ryder using any other method except RAGE or load up your characters save in a different chapter and just earn the last of the Xp you need doing quest.

Method 1
Similar or somewhat the same as the old method on the 360 version where you just beat Rider White at the end of the game with your Rage ability to give you a massive stack of xp.
First BEAT THE GAME!
After beating it, select new game and choose the character you finished the game with, then select Chapter 18.
Then it will ask you to choose a save. Use your main character save (should be the save closest to the top)
Now this will load you up on the final fight with Rider White.
Simply fight off the army guys and the zombies until your Rage meter is full, after that head to the heli-pad to fight Ryder and kill him with your Rage ability.
This will give you tons of xp and is a very effective way to Rank up fast!

Here is a video I made for example. After killing him I earned 60,000xp Although I was level 51 so depending on what level you are, xp my be different, for example if your level 40 Youll probably earn about 30-40k for killing him. I also hit a 4x multiplier while I kill him in RAGE, if your finding it difficult to get a 4x multi then you need to upgrade your duration and damage in the skill tree.

The making a new game method works also with money
I found that if you are running low on cash, load up chapter 14 where it will load you up in the Laboratory.
There will be missions finished that you can collect money from.
Simply collect the money, quit the game and repeat. This way you can constantly earn money for things like medkits, ammo, repairs etc.

I have also made a clip for this for example.

Method 2

This leveling up method can be done using a Continuous quest 'time for booze' where you have to give this drunken Russian lady 'Brand Champagne'. In exchange she will give you 1000xp and diamonds for each bottle you give her. This quest can be found as early as Chapter 3. You'll also need to use a duplication glitch to get yourself 100s of bottles.

First things first you'll need to be on:

Chapter 3: Wheels of Steel
Quest: Born to be Wild (Talk to Sinamoi)

If you have just started then keep playing the game until you reach this point, for people that have past this Chapter or beat the game, you can go to Character select 'New game' select the character you've been playing with, then go on 'Chapter 3' it will then ask you to select a save, click on the main character save you have been using (the save closest to the top) Then when you spawn in you should be outside Sinamois room.

Step 1: Getting Brand Champagne

Your going to need 'Brand Champagne', you can only get this item in Chapter 3 and The super market chapter later on in the game.

If you already have Champagne:
Talk to Sinamoi and accepts his quest, then it will save so that everytime you reload the Chapter you'll spawn outside the room Sinamoi is in. we need that so that the glitch will work, read further down to find step 2.

If you don't have Champagne:
You'll need to accept Sinamois quest where he will ask you to go into the hotel to get the truck. In the kitchen area of the hotel, in the fridges you'll find your Champagne, try loot as many as you can.

Here is a clip that shows where to find the Brand champagne in the Hotel. Once you have the bottle/s, you can save and quit to main menu and reload chapter 3.

Once you have reloaded Chapter 3, talk to Sinamoi again and accept his quest, this way it will save the game so every time you reload the Chapter you'll always spawn outside the room where Sinamoi is. If you already had Champagne then all you had to do is talk to him and accept his quest so it saves.

Step 2: Duplicating the bottles

Now comes the duplication Glitch. What your going to be doing now is duplicating bottles over and over again until you feel like you have enough to rank to 50. Note that the duplication glitch works with all items including weapons and crafting materials.

I will explain how it works in text and in a clip.

Once you have accepted the quest and it saves, you can drop the items you want to duplicate.
Then after you have done that you must run to the back of the building where the railing is and jump of the edge, the fall should kill you but as soon as you die you must instantly hit start and reload checkpoint!

Then as soon as you spawn you'll notice the items you dropped on the floor will still be where you left them but if you also check your inventory, all the items will be back in your inventory as if you never dropped them so you should be left with double the items!! This is where the Champagne trick come in! Say if you dropped 2 bottles then killed yourself and reloaded checkpoint, you should be left with 4 bottles, then do it again and it doubles and keeps going and going.

Here is a clip that will teach you how to use the duplication glitch.

Step 3: Continuous Quest (Time for Booze) Getting the XP

When you feel you have enough champagne, the next thing is finding the Quest to get the XP.
The Quest can be found on the top right of the Island, The quest giver will be in a hut with some other pissed up people, you'll know its her as she demands that she must get drunk!

When you accept the quest you can keep giving her the bottles and she will give you 1000xp and diamonds everytime! These diamonds can also be sold for $1000 dollars each. So not only are you going to be level 50, you'll also be million dollars richer!

This clip will show you the location and me giving her the bottles that I duplicated.

If you feel the solutions don't make much sense or needs alterations, feel free to leave your opinions in the comments.

I have found that it will only save my inventory after a checkpoint. If I keep dropping my items and jump off the lifeguard tower when I reload I'll have the same amount I had that I originally dropped and when I pick up what I dropped it will be duplicated but if I start again before a checkpoint it wont save them to my inventoryand I actually lose some. I have to get a checkpoint to save the updated inventory numbers. So what I been doing is accept a quest at the guard tower, duplicate champagne, do the quest and get a checkpoint, duplicate champagne, turn in quest for a checkpoint, duplicate champagne. That's the only way I can get the champagne to duplicate. I'm on chapter 3 born to be wild and have accepted the quest and got the checkpoint. Problem is it does not save when you reload it. The posted video doesnt work anymore (atleast on my phone it doesn't) so I'm not sure if it use to save after reloading and has been patched or not.

Used this method to hit 50, but the achievement didn't unlock. Anyone else have this problem? I don't know whether to keep levelling and hope it unlocks, or reload my pre-boosting save and try something else...

AJBowie ,thats the issue I had with the level up not coming up so I killed him with a grenade instead to get less xp so that next time I loaded up the final chapter I could level up off the army guys and infected to get the level up to come up on the screen.

I decided to see if would pop at 51 and after a couple more run throughs it just randomly popped (at about 75% of the progress bar to level 51). I did try reloading level 49 as suggested by Mike, but that didn't work for me.

+1 It's the quickest way. But it's still such a grind.

It's also majorly worth noting that if you kill him too quickly before you finish your Rage, then you won't be awarded any XP as the cutscene plays. So depending on your character and their strengths. Don't go to/past the second upgrade for Rage duration

i never tried this method, but i used the old grenade yourself duplication glitch from 360, still works on definitive, kept duplicating brand champagne, and doing the drunk girl side quest easy level up and tons of diamonds as bonus

I've tried this method twice and never got any XP. Using a level 43 Sam B. Guess I'll just mix it up with a campaign play through and Arena.

You should add that Xian shouldn't be upgraded past her second duration increase because my rage never runs out in time. You could let it run down lower before slashing up Ryder but that's extra time he can beat on you...She's a glass cannon.

Il look into and add it to the solution!
Are you saying that you kill Ryder to quick with you're badass character that the rage duration keeps going until the cut scene! Ending with you not gaining any Xp?
Strange because my logans duration skill is maxed and I didn't have any problems. Mite be because it takes longer for me to kill him then you , not to sure.

Same issue as me - my Cian character kills him with only x3 and most of my rage bar left.

The XP is awarded after the credits but you get no notification. I just levelled up from 42 to 43, but assume I will it the above if I go to 50, where the game won't register it and give me the achievement - need to add a warning to this method if someone doesn't keep a second save file on 49 they'll have to do it all again........

Did some duplication of champagne bottles to mix it up ( I need 1,300+ to get to 50 :( ) and I tried to duplicate a gun but it didn't work. When I picked it up it 'disappeared' and wasn't added to my inventory

Just a heads up primarily to people playing xian who are killing Ryder too fast and not getting xp. On top of the roof to the back right of the helicopter is an (L) shaped stretch of concrete, if you jump over it and stand at the pointy middle section Ryder will have a tough time hitting you, he cant get past the wall. So you can get the timing right to make sure you do not kill him with too much rage bar left.

Haven’t seen this anywhere so commenting in case you’re one of the unlucky ones like me!

If you hit level 50 using Ryder and it doesn’t pop, I started a NG+ and it popped immediately upon killing my first enemy. I’d imagine it also works reloading the Ryder fight though too.

I was having the damndest time getting this to pop as I originally hit 50 while in rage which seems to bug it out, I tried reloading to a level 49 save several times and hitting 50 by normal kills both on Ryder and on soldiers/zombies but nothing, I continued playing my 50 save even up to level 51 but still nothing, finally force closed the whole game and on rebooting it, viola! +1 for the strat!

Do I keep doing the samething over and over again after I defeat Rider?

By CYBORG TANKv18 on 03 Jul 2016 11:18
Yeah you defeat rider with your characters rage ability to get the max amount of xp out of it everytime you do it. So I would recommend before you actually face him on the heli-pad, you kill the infected to build up your rage meter, once it's full , run up the top and kill rider with your rage. Then just keep repeating the process until your level 50.

A third alternative I've found seems to be quite effective.

Load up a new game at chapter 3, born to be wild. Stockpile as many grenades and/or deo-bombs as you can and proceed to the hotel waypoint for the quest. Avoid the two thugs and grab the keycard and use it on the keypad, DO NOT ENTER THE HOTEL! Using the keycard activates a checkpoint right here, kill the thugs with you grenades/deo-bombs and reload checkpoint. Repeat ad nauseum until you hit lvl 50. At level 46 I'm getting over 10k experience every 30 seconds.

Credit for this method goes to the youtube video below;

This one is by far the fastest and least tedious, after trying all of the above as Sam B.

Just a heads up: if you throw a grenade after the thugs have died, then quickly load last checkpoint, the grenade will not despawn and you can spawn kill the thugs that extra bit quicker. I was getting 10k xp around every 15 seconds (not counting duping the grenades).

Method still works March 2024. Excellent solution 👍😸👍

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but if you throw a third grenade and pause it mid animation as you throw it.... Re load it.... The grenade goes off when you respawn and damages the thugs as they reappear... Just speeds things up a bit.

I couldn't add this to my previous solution above as I recorded it on my dummy profile so here it is.

In this solution I will explain:
. A new fast Xp method to get to 50 by killing Ryder White.
. Explaining the fastest way to kill him without using Rage and still earn a good amount of Xp.
. A recorded clip showing you how its done.

This is for those of you who couldn't use the RAGE method with the final boss fight of the end of the game.

Similar to the the last method but with some little differences. What you will need to do is get to the boss on the helipad, before the fight begins make sure you have a Rife (Rifles can be looted from the dead army guys that were protecting Ryder White)

Then what you will do is kill him, then as soon as he is dead and the XP pops up, quickly hit start and 'Load last checkpoint' It should then spawn you on the ground level of the roof near all the ammo, and you should be able to fight him again, just rinse and repeat the fight at the end until you hit level 50. By the time you get to the end of the game you should be around level 36-40 and should only take you around 1-2 hours to get to 50 using this method, depending on how fast you can kill him.

I will show you the fastest way to kill him without RAGE
What you will want to do is everytime you load last save, run into this corner shown in this clip next to all the rifle ammo, only pick up one box of ammo at a time. It should be enough to kill him. Then while in this corner you will notice you are untouchable! Making Infected Ryder stand there for you to gun him down with ease. After a few times of killing him, you will notice that their wont be any ammo left in the corner. What you want to do when that happens is just quit out the game then hit 'Continue on the main menu putting you back into the boss fight with all the ammo boxses back in the corner.

Sometimes he gets glitched on top of the Heli-pad , so you will just want to shoot at him a couple times to get his attention then quickly run into that corner.

I have a Shock Rifle that I modded on the work bench, if you shoot him with a gun that as an elemental effect it should kill him quicker!

I tested out all these methods and this one works out faster and more effective then the other ones I posted in my opinion.
If you are playing with Logan then the first method on my original solution should work best for you. Sam B players this ones for you toast

Question. If my friend and I beat the game, Can we go back and do this later, or is it a one chance only opportunity?

Great solution, I would just add to use a grenade for the killing blow because it doubles (give or take) the xp, by the end I was getting 26,000 for a grenade kill. Depending on your level you might not get as much, I started this in the 30’s and was still getting a good amount but not 26,000.

Last thing, when using a grenade, throw it and then run away. If you’re killed by the blast you don’t get the xp until the timer is done and you start again which immediately starts the cut scene and you’ll have to start the beginning of the fight over shooting guards and zombies.

DropDeadArtemus, I think you should be able to go back and do this. Start a new game, select your character you got there with and it gives you a chapter select screen and pick chapter 18.

You could earn this just through natural gameplay but there are ways that help get it quicker if you choose to do so. The best way I found to raise your XP the quickest was by playing the Prologue over and over, killing all the zombies. You gain a lot more XP for kills in the Prologue than you do in the main story. If choose to replay it, DO NOT finish the level by running to the storage room bc once you do you'll start the main game and can no longer replay the Prologue. However you can join another person's game in a co op and start the main story, as soon as you leave the game you'll be brought back to the Prologue. This is a good chance for you to grab some better weapons and upgrade and modify them to help get you through your Prologue replays quicker, since the only weapons you'll find are the occasional knives, clevers, and pipes. If your lucky maybe a bat. Once you get the call that the infected are after you and to run to storage room, run down the hall enter the third door on the left. There will be a zombie right at the entrance to the room so do a jump kick to quickly knock it down since three infected will be chasing you. Jump onto the bed in the room where you'll be safe and the infected can't get to you. Now just do jump kicks to knock them to the floor and just stomp them to death. For each kill you'll notice you gain a good amount of XP. Kill the rest of the zombies in the game. One will spawn at the entrance of the room, take a right, back the way you came and you'll find 5 in the area going out to the balcony. Once killed, turn around and take a right, where the initial infected chased you from and you'll find 2-3 more will have spawned. Once they all have been killed, press and quit the game. Now just play over and over and you can have level 50 reached within several hours. It does get a little tedious so I would recommend acquiring any skills that increase the amount of XP you can gain as well as any skills that decrease the amount of rage to activate Fury since using it will gain you even more XP, I would recommend using Fury anytime you can. Any skill that increases the duration of Fury will help. I also would definitely unlock the stomping skill when you can, so you don't have to be constantly kicking or slashing a weapon (if found) at them to make the kill.

By the time you reach the end of the lab you should have around level 37-40 go to the Bloodbath arena to Arena A and kill zombies until wave 15 then quit the arena then go back and repeat until level 50
