How to unlock the Unlocked All Costumes achievement in DEAD OR ALIVE 4 - Definitive Guide

You can get costumes for any character by beating Story mode or time attack mode with them. For characters like Ein or the Spartan that aren't in story mode, you're going to have to do time attack mode for them. There's no real easy way to win except learn moves for all the characters and learn how and when to counter, and how the game flows. Beginners more than likely won't have an easy time, but as you get more experienced it will become easier. You can also buy costumes online in the shop, but they cost so much it isn't worth it to do so.

NOTE: To unlock costumes using Time Attack mode you need to be playing on default settings. You can use adjusted settings for getting the other Time attack achievements however.

slik would like to note the amount of costumes for each character:

Ya, that Default setting is pretty damn dumb for a requirement. Especially with little miss 2-shot end boss. Nothing like pulling out her "I Win" moves every time you turn around.

I don't know if it can be done in tag. I don't really how that would work so if you want to check to be sure, then by all means go ahead.

Do you simply have to FINISH the time attack (with normal settings) or medal it to unlock the costumes?

You simply need to finish, so you can take as long as you need to beat Alpha.

This stupid Alpha-152 really sucks. Beating it twice can be rather a question of luck. And is has this one attack after which your as good as done...
With some characters (like Ein) it works better, but the last 2 I'm missing are Leon and Gen Fu...

I found out if you change your time zone back and forth between 2 different days, you can buy all the costumes instead of waiting 24 Hours...

For some reason Spartan is the easiest to use character in this game... Why is that. Maybe because she was designed for noobs? Haha.

thanks for the costume-count list, that's pretty much all that is required from a guide for this cheev.
as he's not on the list, i take it Tengu only has his 2 default costumes?

For the Story Mode costumes, you can also use a Turbo controller to unlock them whenever you feel too tired to play manually. In Story Mode, you only need to win 1 round per fight so having your turbo play fights for you can actually yield results over time. The unforgiving AI can really take a toll after a while and automating some of the fights can make unlocking costumes more bearable. Be informed, that you'll need to be monitoring the game on standby in order for this to work (to press cn_start). It's still better than having to win all those fights manually as it can be a frustratingly tedious process. You can watch your smartphone, laptop, do work, etc. while the turbo plays for you.

I simply set my Hori to hit various combinations of the Punch (cn_Y), Kick (cn_B), and directional buttons then let the Turbo controller play the fights. Usually an attack button + cn_left or cn_right were set to rapid fire. Whenever I lost, I would quickly press the start button to continue and then repeat (before the timer got to zero). Listen out for when the announcer says "You Lose" and be ready to mash that start button to try again. Sometimes, I'd play a fight manually depending on how much I was losing. After 15-20 losses normally I'd adjust the buttons being pressed or I'd step in and win it myself. It definitely cut down on the monotony of it all since I was putting less brain energy into anxiously trying to outsmart the AI.

There are 105 costumes in the game and having to play through the game with various characters you may not like against a ruthless AI is not my idea of fun. Using a turbo controller can help mitigate some of the stress.

Note: I wouldn't bother trying to use turbo to unlock the Time Attack costumes for Ein, Gen Fu, Leon, and Spartan. Settings must be set to default in order to earn costumes from that mode and you have to win 2 rounds instead of 1 which requires much more luck. You're probably better off just playing manually to unlock those costumes.

The "easy way": If you are aiming to get S or SS rank achievement anyway, you don't have to fight boring fights over and over again. By the time you getting S or SS ranks you have such amounts of Zack-Dollars, you can buy almost all costumes.
And now a little Math:
There is a total of 103 costumes for 21 characters.
42 costumes you have because every character had 2 at the start.
17 costumes you get by completing all the stroy-modes for every
character. therefore.

So you already have 59 costumes and 44 missing. Each costume costs 5.000. 5.000x44 = 220.000

When you are fighting for rank the amount of Zack-Dollars you getting from a fight is almost a same as the amount of points (if not even the same), so you need 195.000 pts for SS it means you'll have 195.000 Zack-Dollars by than.

And now: 220.000 (sum you need to by all the missing costumes) - 195.000 (sum you got by getting SS) = 25.000 its a difference of 5 costumes you have to get on your own.

Even if you are good and Story- or Time-Mode takes 5-7 minutes to complete to get alle the costumes the usual way will take 44x6 = 264 minutes its over four hours you can spare...

The only thing you need to remember: if you bought the last costume you have to complete story or time mode once to unlock the achievement. So just spare the last costume and get it the usual way...

It makes sense to do it this way if you're boosting SS Rank. Yours was the only solution which mentioned you need to replay Story or Time Attack if you bought the last costume. I just bought the last costume and after such a long time waiting I was disturbed when the achievement didn't pop. I now know what I have to do. Thanks.

I bought the last costume and I checked the checklist and then I started time mode and read that I had to play with standard settings or I wont get costumes so I quit out before even the first battle started and I got the achievement right away. (So it's like the 100 hours played achievement, they pop when your at the main menu when it says "Saving Game")

I hate this game! This has got to be the most cheap and frustrating fighting game I've played. Love the graphics and the interactive backgrounds but as far as game play is concerned this game lacks badly. Punch, Punch, kick..or punch, punch, punch, kick or if ur getting hit too much just hit back and block and hopefully you'll parry a move. Sucks!

This achievement is annoyingly tedious. Playing through the regular story mode as you unlock characters should net you a few costumes right away. Keep in mind most characters have similar button combinations. Learn a few basic moves and you should be able to have some success with any character - which makes playing through as each one substantially easier. No less frustrating when dealing with the ridiculously cheap AI but winning with everyone does get easier if you simply focus on basics. Especially since you'll be playing as each character several times to unlock all their costumes.

Buying costumes might be a little pricey but really, what else are you going to spend your Zack cash on. A hat for you avatar? If you're playing online for those achievements you're going to earn some cash. Not enough to buy all the costumes but easily enough to buy those for the characters that are no good (cough Spartan cough). You can also only buy one costume per character per day. Checking the store is also a handy way of seeing who has costumes that you haven't unlocked yet since only the ones you're missing are purchasable.

One thing to consider is that I bought the last two costumes I needed - one for Hitomi and one for Spartan. I also bought several other costumes previously. But once I had them all the achievement didn't unlock. I had to go back and play through a Time Attack series. I chose to use Hitomi (since it was one of the costumes I just bought) and played all the way through on default settings beating the boss. Then it unlocked.

Every time you complete story mode you´ll unlock a costume, for the unlockable characters you need to complete Time Attack (on Default Settings). In Zack´s shop you can buy 1 costume per character every day. Number of costumes: Ayane: 6 Bass: 4 Bayman: 3 Brad Wong: 3 Christie: 4 Ein: 4 Elliot: 4 Gen Fu: 4 Hayabusa: 4 Hayate: 4 Helena: 5 Hitomi: 8 Jann Lee: 4 Kasumi: 7 Kokoro: 7 La Mariposa : 5 Leifang : 7 Leon: 4 Spartan-458 (Nicole): 7 Tina: 5 Zack: 4
