How to unlock the Guardian Angel achievement in Dead Rising 3 - Definitive Guide

Here are the locations of the survivors. There are 8 groups of 3 people about to be executed. As far as I know the guard needs to be shot or they will die, though I have not tried to use melee, I would suggest a regular Assault rifle, Machine pistols or a regular pistol. Nothing with splash as the survivors are very weak. Another thing you will have to watch out for are zombies as they will attack the tied up survivors. Some are more prone to attack than others, which I will note from my experiences. Also if they die, you can not (as far as I know) complete the achievement and will have to do it on another play through, it took me 4 to get it.

The survivors pop up after talking to Winnie and Doug calls you back to the school for the impending attack. If you have already beaten the DLC you can just go around gathering collectibles or saving survivors without progressing the story.

Here is the order I did them in:
MAP:
External image

1) Following the Yellow marker towards the school will take you into the sewer/water run off area. There should be little to no zombies so just shoot the guard and untie the people.

2) In South Almuda (same place Winnie is) by the Garage where you spawn vehicles. This one can technically be done before the first. There are quite a few zombies around, try to clear some out before untying them.

3) In Ingleton right next to the Garage where you spawn vehicles. I never had many zombies here but it's always good to be cautious and clear them away.

4) In Ingleton, up north by the Motel that serves as a hideout. In the walled in area, no real zombie threat unless you have a horde following you.

5) Take the CENTRAL highway to Sunset Hills, I will explain why. You will find the survivors right when you get into Sunset Hills from the highway to the right in the plaza.

6) This one was bugged pretty bad for me. They are located on the northern highway. For some reason when coming from the west (Ingleton) they would die instantly when I got near them, even after killing the guard. Make sure you come from Sunset Hills. I would still recommend saving before going to them.

7) On the southernmost bridge connecting Central City and South Almuda. Can be a few zombies so clear them out.

8) In Central City right by the crashed yacht. I list this one last because quite frankly, it was a pain in the ass. I failed 3 or 4 times before even making it to them (they spawned with zombies attacking). Save before doing this one and be ready to reload.

A few quick tips based on the comments below:

1) Survivors can die after getting the Success notification for untying all of them. (Thanks you wes coasn, TheStayonTarget and spxyu02 for confirming). It seems that if one or two die before untying, and you are able to untie the last one you should get the success notification, though I do not know if it will count.

2) During the mission to check out the S. Almuda safehouse, you will see people dying. This is part of the game and are not part of the survivors for the achievement. After this mission is when the survivors start popping up.

3) Once the survivors show up (After talking to Winnie) make sure you do #1 before crossing the central bridge (Thank you spxyu02)

4) Bring flare guns to distract zombies (Thank you litepink) and drink Repulse (thank you spxyu02 and litepink) Ration + Ration.

Hope this helps, I will be making a map to hopefully make this easier, should be up later today. Any questions or comments feel free to leave them.

I had 2 survivors die on me. I ran one over and the other died when he crossed my gunfire. All 8 times I got the Mission successful pop up.

I was heading to the safe house in South Almuda and getting collectibles when it popped up saying that x survivor had died followed by another and another...

I reloaded my save and traveled all the way back thinking to go straight for the safe house but it came up again that x survivors had died. SO, I saw your map and solution here but now I'm at #2 on the map in South Almuda and cannot find anyone...

Is it just part of the story or am I missing something here? =S

Searched by the garage vehicle spawn, construction site etc. Nothing =S

*Vernon, Katarina and Nora.

Aha I believe it's a part of the game, they are meant to. Heads up for those who see it and do the same as me XD

Make sure to do #1 before crossing the central bridge to do #5. I had started with 3 & 4, then heeded the solution's advice to cross the central bridge, but in doing so I triggered #1, and failed it almost immediately, even trying in vain to jump out of the vehicle and down to #1 from the bridge (impossible I'm pretty sure).

Thank goodness I saved after #3, and even though a pop-up said "side mission failed" after I loaded, #1 was still intact when I reached there again.

I can confirm that as long as you get the Mission Accomplished screen, it counts towards the achievement. I had survivors die after I untied them and before but completed every mission.

And to confirm, I just popped it with the help of this guide. My ultimate order was: 3,4,1,2,5,6,7,8. I used a ZAR to one-shot the guards, and I always had Repulse active (no stress collectible gathering ftw), and only at #8 were zombies remotely close, so I shot the guard, then 3-4 zombies just to be safe.

Also, I'm fairly sure some survivors probably ran into some zombies after I untied them, but as long as you get the side-quest complete check-mark on all survivor groups, I think you're okay.

Thanks for the great solution!

@kHz RazgriZ -- As you approach the survivors, a piece of text will pop up just above the middle of your screen requesting that you stop the execution (it will have an empty square shape below it). Upon successfully saving the survivors, the text will return, and a check mark will pop into the box, confirming that you have completed this mission/side-quest. I don't think it's listed on the Maps & Missions screen (unless you check while shooting the guard or untying the survivors).

*What's this side quest check? =S The only thing I have in side missions is destroy surveillance cameras...

I hope this hasn't glitched =O

/* OK, it just popped.

Thanks spxyu02, yeah that's what was popping up about preventing the execution and it coming up afterwards. The survivors run away and just fade away when distant.

Was a bit confused when people said about the check in the box for side quests/missions.

And obviously thanks to Insane Monkey too =)

Awesome map, thank you. I brought along some flare guns as to distract the zombies without accidentally shooting anyone. Also recommend the Repulsor combo drink (ration+ration).

You do NOT need to rescue all three survivors per location. I had them being shot and eaten but I had at least one saved per location and it still popped.

I definitely recommend doing the one marked 2 first as it's hard to get back into that section of the city again. I'd do 2,1,5,6,4,3,7. Since location 7 is a dead end, doing it in this order will allow you to do all 8 without turning around at any point. I'd also recommend doing this ASAP, as the DLC is much shorter than you might expect. You'll have to restart the whole thing if you finish before you get all 8.

My order is 1,5,2,3,4,8,7,6. I did loss one survivor in Central but after I saved the last group the cheevo pop up for me. So you does not necessarily need to save all three.

Don't do what I did and complete the Episode thinking you will have free roam at the end. Left one group at the end and I had do it all over again. Luckily this is a short DLC. Excellent solution. One of the better ones I've seen put together.

I recommend to play in Nightmare Mode, as that way you strictly decide by yourself whether it is save to update your saved game progress.

Great guide!!! Everything worked flawlessly except for #8. 1 Survivor died before I could throw a couple Queen Bees. I also went in with a Roller Hawg to thin things out nearby first, then eliminated the guard. Thanx!

I thought about this after posting my comment above. Why not just use the Hawg to do this??? They're "friendlies" in the game, and, as such, will not take damage! I restarted the DLC and did about half of them. CAREFULLY maneuver the Hawg into position and thin out, then take out the guard. The survivors do not get roasted! I walked up to one and fired a shotgun point blank and they took no damage! I also accidentally ran over one, but, still got the check mark.

Pay attention to number 6! So frustrating as I overlooked it's details and kept killing them by showing up from the west side. The flares are immensely helpful just shoot at the feet of the survivors and you should have no problems with zombies killing them

good guide and map. +1 and as a tip make sure you carry a flare gun to distract the zombies so you can untie the survivors. also you can manually save after you have the notification that you have completed the side quest. if the survivor(s) die when you are trying to save them just reload last checkpoint instead of having to restart the episode again.

Before you do the same mistake as me, ONLY ONE flare gun is way more than enough. Which can be found at the very beginning of the episode

I got the achievement, and I'm positive one was killed by a zombie before I untied them. I killed the Spec Ops agent before the execution and I got 10,000 PP in stead of the max 20,000 PP. So the Side mission was successful - just not completely successful.

I'm assuming all that matters is that you prevent the Spec Ops agent from executing them.

Group 6 on the bridge kept glitching for me and Cara/everyone would die just by walking towards it. So I saved them for last and it worked without any of them instantly dying from nothing. I also came from the right side of the bridge the last time, the glitched times was from the left, but I doubt that matters.

I almost had a heart attack, one of the survivors of group 8 died right after I untied everyone, I got the exp for a side mission complete and reloaded the save, still got the achievement when I saved last group on the bridge.

I had a survivor die after I saved him but before the mission success notification and it didn’t pop. I had to redo it, second time round I just stocked out on queen bees. They’re super useful, just throw one near the survivors before you untie them and you should be good. The achievement took like 30 seconds to pop so don’t panic if you don’t get it right away.

This probably goes without saying, but it appears that this has to be done on a single play-through. Also, it seems you can't continue once you complete the episode, so you're just stuck starting over.. angry

@ClaytThaGreat – I don’t think that has been confirmed yet. What is confirmed is that after you receive the “success” notificaition, any or all of them can die then. I had one die though a split second after I untied them and got less PP for the mission. This might be why I didn’t get the achievement on my first playthrough (or I might have missed a group. I wasn’t paying full attention to this achievement in my first run).

So I’d make sure all 3 are alive until you get the 20,000 PP and the success prompt. As mentioned in the guide though if you shoot a flare gun the zombies won’t bother them and you can easily untie them all.

No.8 on your map.. i untie 1 of them, the other 2 died from zombie. It still gave me the check mark to say prevent execution. Then i saved my last group No.7 on your map, untied them all (so in total 2 people died) It popped the achievement for me.
Im guessing as long as it says prevent execution then you are good :)

To anyone who might have this issue. If you cross the central bridge before handling the first group, it may APPEAR glitched, but what you can do is this. Kill the guard, untie the two girls that are there. Now, to the left of these survivors will be an invisible survivor that you can untie. This will absolve the mission, and you will get credit.

This is part of the Fallen Angel DLC.

This seems to be the third most daunting achievement in Dead Rising 3, with a whopping 1.1% attainment rate. Now, there are eight total survivor groups and in order for a rescue to count, you must see the Mission Accomplished indication for it to count. If someone dies while they are untied or dies before they are untied, it doesn't matter so long as one of the three in a group survives. Below is a map showing all of the locations. The survivors only begin to spawn once you get close to the first group, so stock up before you head out.

Refer to the below image for specific locations:

There are eight groups of survivors. You must get Mission Accomplished in order for it to count. This means that of the three, only one must be untied and survive. If someone dies when they are untied or dies before they are untied, it doesn’t matter. So long as you get the Mission Accomplished pop up.

Here is a map of all survivor locations. They will only start to spawn after you find the first group in the river bed (it can't be missed). Thanks to Insane Monkey for the map!

The first task appears according to the plot, and then we look at the map below with the location of the survivors. ATTENTION! Be careful, because... The survivors have few lives; zombies can kill them. Personally, I had one killed, but the task was completed and in the end they gave me an achievement, but still.

PS To get to point 2 you must return the way you left in the story via the metro
