How to unlock the Nightmare Master achievement in Dead Rising 3 - Definitive Guide

** Possible Small Spoilers Below **

Nightmare Mode is the same as the Story mode except the Game no longer Auto-saves (meaning if you die you start back at the last time you saved the game which can be a huge headache!) and also you have less time to complete the game before the bomb goes off (2 in-game days less).

I do NOT recommend this mode for your first play through unless you are a veteran of the series and know what you are in for.

My tips for completing this without any trouble:

1) SAVE OFTEN! I cannot stress this enough, because if you die you can lose a whole lot of progress and may cause you to throw your controller at the wall.
The Easiest way to do this is to look at the map and go to the closest safe house you can find as they always have a save point in them, this is far easier than trying to locate one elsewhere.

2) Be level 50 with all attributes upgraded fully and also have unlocked the combo weapon abilities where you can combine almost anything (Note: You will have to have a fair amount of blueprints).
This isn't required but is strongly recommended as this gives you perks like regenerating health, indestructible vehicles and so forth.

3) Always have a range Weapon (I always used the Z.A.R which is just two guns combined), A Good Melee Weapon (any will do, just combine any combination of knives/blunt weapons) and an Energizer Drink (this drink makes you invincible for around 4 minutes, just combine 2 soft drinks to make it however you must have unlocked the ability to combine drinks/food in your attributes panel).
Keep this drink until you really need it or use it when facing bosses to make them a breeze, very easy to remake as well, just go to any fast food joint/restaurant and restock.

4) Ignore all side missions and Optional Bosses, just focus on the main storyline and you should have no problem getting to the end with plenty of time to spare.

5) Right at the end of the game you will have the option of killing Gary or going to find Rhonda and bringing her back to him. Kill Gary, its far faster, less chance of dieing and is just generally easier. This Method means that you will NOT trigger overtime mode after completing Chapter 7 (you don't need to do overtime mode to obtain the achievement).
Killing Gary gives you an ending where you will not unlock everything, both achievement wise (Completing overtime mode) and in-game wise (New Gun). So if you want these things find Rhonda instead.

Hope these tips help anyone looking to obtain this achievement.
It really isn't too hard, following my tips above I completed the whole thing in under 4 hours and didn't die once.

Enjoy.

I’ll fess up and say that it was me who down voted, and I coincidentally came back here to see if the solution had changed, and it had. Therefore I changed my vote back to positive again (went from Positive>Negative>back to Positive). From what I’ve seen I was the only downvoter in the first place (???)

I felt the the way the solutuion was worded, along with one of the replies above, made it appear that striving for Overtime was not a viable notion on Nightmare. In reality, it is very very easy, and to many gamers obtaining the Mega Blasters is very important to them. Being leveled up you can do the small extra part neccesary in Chapter 7 to unlock Overtime without getting hurt even if you use an Energizer drink. Then you get your achievement, at which time you can do Overtime at your leisure. Maybe I overreacted with the initial downvote but I had every intention to change the vote, which I did. Thanks for adding more clarity in regards to your final choice in the game!

Everything from a previous game carries over when you start a new game, even flicking between nightmare mode and normal doesn't matter, you can even be chapter specific when starting i.e choose to start from chapter 4 instead of starting again if you wanted and it would still carry over your stats.
The only thing you cant do is start a new game on say normal then start a new game on nightmare and play on each of them separately, you can only have one campaign going at a time.
I would recommend playing through Normal mode again (as I'm assuming you are new to the dead rising series) to complete all the achievements you want/level up your guy more, then do a speed run on nightmare mode (tips shown above in solution).
In regards to the PP trials however, the final one requires you to kill a total of around 320k zombies (ALOT more than the 100k for the achievement) so I wouldn't bother completing this one until after you have gotten every other pp trial done and completed your speed run, just to maximize your time.

Hope this helps, any other queries, feel free to ask.

worth pointing out that if u kill gary u get ending c but it's well worth finding rhonda and going for the s class ending as it unlocks the mega buster, there is plenty of time to do this and it's the best weapon in the game.

I would still point out that you are getting what us generally regarded as the sub-par ending, and you miss out on the mega blasters. Finding Rhonda takes very little effort and you can save right beforehand if you're worried.

Its fine honestly guys, I don't really care about the votes as long as my 'solution' helps someone in any way.
I'm always conscious of updating my solutions in regards to feedback so that its the best it can possibly be, so thanks for that.

Can you tell me how your stats and game progress carry over and what is the best strategy for completing all achievements? I am about to finish the story in normal mode, but there are plenty of achievements I didn't get (collecting all combo blueprints, making all vehicles, doing all the survival challenges, completing all PP missions, etc.), so my plan was to go back and do another run in normal mode to pick those up rather than try to do them in Nightmare mode (I assume there just isn't time to do that, right?). So, can I finish this first run at normal mode and then start a new normal mode that I don't finish, and then start Nightmare mode? What happens? Do all of my stats carry over (i.e. my level, zombies killed, blueprints collected, etc.)? If I level up to 50 and have all blueprints after my first two normal mode runs, will I start Nihgtmare mode with those things or does everything reset?

I killed Gary in chapter 7 and was then told to find the access code, presumably for the karaoke bar, but could not find it anywhere. The bomb went off, game over :( wasted nearly a whole day there. Anyone know where the access code is?

By Aidax89 on 16 Jan 2014 21:30
When you kill Gary he should drop the access code for you or you automatically get it and just try opening the door, can't quite remember which one it was.

Neither, the door was still locked and spent ages searching around Gary's body but no code to be found. Starting again now, gonna go the hole hog and take Rhonda to him this time to be on the safe side

I had a similar problem when going to get Rhonda, the door to the garage showed the yellow square but I could not interact with the door, nor was I able to activate the cut scene.
I saved the game, quit and then reloaded. The game started up with the Rhonda cutscene.

TLDR If you have issues with missing items, not able to interact, try save, quit and reload. Has helped me out on a few occasions.

Great solution! I recommend skipping the Rhonda/Gary mission as well and just kill Gary. Screw doing overtime, chances are good you already got the X-buster during the normal story mode.

So easy once all your attributes are maxed out. I didn't die once and I took down the crane in the final segment with just ONE shot from my ZAR.

I just wanted to point out that DillionDay's comment above is incorrect. You can only get the Megaman suit on normal after overtime (ending s) but you still, if you want the best weapon in the game, need to finish nightmare and not kill Gary to get the Megaman blaster.

I currently have 104 out of 105 Blueprints. I've yet to attempt Nightmare Mode but I intend to do it soon. Is the Mega Blasters the bluepring I'm missing or is that weapon not a blueprint weapon? I'm just trying to figure out what the missing blueprint is.

I have completed this game twice on nightmare mode and still no achievement. First time I got the S rating and went into overtime completed that and the credits rolled, no achievement. Then I immediately played the whole campaign again this time killing Gary and getting the C Ending and still no achievement. I even have the Mega Man gun. Is anyone else having this issue or does anyone have any advice on what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advanced.

I just wanted to update in case anyone else has this problem. I completed Nightmare Mode maybe three times, twice on August 1 before I posted. The achievement popped when I was watching Netflix a week later. Both Xbox and TrueAchievement registered it as won on August 1. No idea why it did this.

Really isn't that hard, if you've played the other DR Ganges, it's essentially the same. The only thing I hated was the saving system. My game froze twice, and nearly froze in OT mode.

So yes, save whenever you can. I suggest doing OT, it doesn't take that long to go get Rhonda, the Mega Buster is so worth it if you're not level 50 or need to work on 100,001 kills.

This may be a dumb question, but does Nightmare Mode have its own "save"? Or does it overwrite your "Normal" save, and also, does your kills carry over? I have about 80k, and I really don't want to start over, lol

I'm going to attempt this later today.......I heard it only takes about 4 hours........the only part that I know is going to be a MAJOR pain in the rear, is that dang fiery lab part........that was the worst part for me in the normal game, lol...........and make sure to save before Gary, so I can go back and try for the overtime mode and the weapon if I feel froggy later, lol

There’s a porta potty next to the plane garage. It’s in front of the entrance past the blue tarp gate.

Also, down the street from the nightclub where you meet Gary, there's another save point.

I just completed chapter 7 (saved before the crane sequence) and the achievement didn’t pop. Tried reloading and nothing. Quit the game and reloaded after trying multiplayer and that got the achievement to pop. Just some tips to try out if the achievement doesn’t pop when it should do for anyone else.

I want to add some info about another ending as not mentioning it leaves a gap in the solution I reckon.
There actually is another ending that is even faster to complete. Instead of going to see Gary, you can go to the plane directly and interact with the cockpit. It is called ending D and completes chapter 7 way faster so it should work, HOWEVER it does not unlock the achievement (unless it glitched, which I wouldn't put passed this game after all). Likely because it is a 'bad' ending.
So don't try it if you want the achievement fast, because once you get to any ending, the whole nightmare playthrough gets wiped and you'd have to replay from scratch.
I tested it myself and wanted to let others know for completeness.
(if you just want to see that ending now, do it with chapter replay on your normal save)

I would Buda however I have angled this solution towards the Easiest/Fastest/Least chance of Dieing directly related to this singular achievement.
I have stated the option for each ending in the solution and said what happens either way (minus the weapon input), purely to not confuse people who may be new to the game and don't know what Nightmare mode entails I have given the easier of the two options.
Thanks for the Input though.smile

The lockers do work. But: There is a catch to it. Where in the normal mode you could get about 4 to 8 items, in Nightmare Mode you only get 2. That sounds like a nightmare, but it's not. As long as you use the Jazz Hands or ZAR, get two Ultimate Reapers, get all of the books (on a complete filled in Smarts perk all books are available at the same time!) and use mixed drinks like untouchable (vegetable and vegetable), which allows you to not get touched by zombies, mix bread and alcohol to become undetectable, and easier: Soft drink and softdrink for Energizer so you can become invulnerable for a short time. With some books the time a mixed drink work much longer than they normally would!

Even better for some of the lazier people: When you enter the Zipp Co. building accross the street from the South Alamuda save point (enter the factory next to the Zipp Co. building, walk the stairs, then the wooden plank, enter the building) most of the drinks are already there.

Some weapons are WAY overpowered and you finish the game super fast.
(It took me about 3 hours or so with a level 50 account, with 3 in-game days to spare. Even with the little mandatory moments I had to go and "explore" the city because someone went for fuel or had to do research)

If I can offer possibly the easiest way to get this achievement? Have a friend save near the end of chapter 7. Then have him invite you in, finish the chapter and *pop*. headspin
20

If you want to get this achievement really quickly without playing the entire game again on Nightmare, and don't have a friend who has a save near the end, its still doable.

Go to Online, Multiplayer, Nightmare then pick speed run.

Now search for a game. I got dropped into a guys game at Chapter 6 on my first try, and took 30mins to complete Chapter 7.

Due to him putting speed run, I knew he was just blasting through it. If you get put into a game at say Chapter 1, just back out and search again.

Da Lukinator has everything down to a tee, just wanted to mention some of the differences between both difficulties.

1) You'll notice in regular mode that as you progress through the chapters, more roads get blocked off (by military, walls, debris etc..). In nightmare, right off the bat most of those roads will already be blocked off and it will progressively get worse as you move along through the story.

2) In regular mode, there's not a crazy amount of cars scattered around the city (if you didn't notice). If you've ever said "why the hell is there no vehicles when I need one?"… In nightmare you'll be saying "why the hell is there no vehicles?"… So again, make sure the attributes for "Mechanic" is maxed, because vehicles are very limited.

3) Like Da Lukinator mentioned.. SAVE EVERYWHERE AND ANYWHERE.. You can't save from the menu, and you also don't save from completing chapters. When ever you see a porta-potty OR you're in a safe house.. spare yourself the frustration and take a nice piss (A.K.A save lol). You can lose a lot of game progress if you die or the host disconnects from the internet randomly.

4) Although you don't have to do all the Psychopath (boss) battles, there are some mandatory ones. They have the same amount of health, but take a lot less damage from your weapons. I recommend using the super-combo weapon called "Elemental Staff". This gun is super savvy and hands down my favourite combo. (You can switch through the elements of the staff simply by pressing (Y)".

5) Also quoting Da Lukinator, ignore every side mission. This is because you'll notice the days are a lot quicker. Side missions have nothing to do with the main storyline (thus the title side mission).

Having a second person is EXTREMELY helpful if you have anybody willing to speed run through the story with you.

(SPOILER FOR THE END OF NIGHTMARE MODE)

Good luck!

Okay, I did this once getting to level 50 and being fully upgraded, because that really help me a lot. I could make combos with almost any 2 items. I also had the X Buster, but because I was recording I avoided using it unless necessary. I found this to be very easy. I didn't die once but I did keep saving just in case, The worst thing is, if you leave your Xbox for a while, it may turn off and if you haven't saved you have to restart from your last save.

I advise you avoid ALL side missions including psychopaths

I hope this and/or my video helps you.

This isn't too hard. If you have the DLC use the mini turret. If not get the ultimate shout. I suggest doing one play through getting all the perks, then you'll be fine. Did this in about 4 hours didn't die once so I didn't need to save at all but if you are worried about it just save after each chapter.

Story related, cannot be missed if playing in Nightmare Mode. It is best to complete the Story Mode and then turn Nightmare Mode into your New Game+. Also, if you want, you can obtain this achievement by joining a friends game if they are in Nightmare Mode Chapter 7. Complete the chapter with them and the achievement will unlock.

It's better to play at normal level. complexity, level up to level 50 (see: to the limit!) and then boldly go into the nightmare and stupidly run through the company, it won’t be too difficult for you to level up. It is better to have a combo weapon A.Z.A. (gunshot + firearm) well, the best thing is Jazz fingers (gunshot + gloves) It knocks down bosses in one go, and it works very effectively against a crowd of zombies interfering with you. It will take about 4 hours, maybe a little more.
