How to unlock the Survivalist achievement in Dead Space 3 - Definitive Guide

Overview of pure survival:

Pure survival is a game mode where you cannot find ANY weapon parts, upgrade circuits, med packs (other than a few medium size packs) or ammo. In this mode you have to craft everything you use. The exceptions to this rule are medium med packs, the original plasmas cutter & sub machine gun from level one and any DLC items you may have.

I actually found this difficulty quite easy. The reason is because of a few factors:

1. Good quality circuit upgrades are available to build right from the start.
NOTE: This may be because of previous game completions etc.

2. Even though you have to create all of your own ammo, med packs etc you can upgrade your RIG much quicker than usual. This is because you get lots of resources, and more than you would by selling actual items.

NOTE: Going for armour and health are obviously the most important ones to start upgrading. Air in this game isn't needed much so you could leave it, and the same really for TK. Therefore I'd suggest then moving onto stasis upgrades.

3. As the only items you can pick up are components and medium med packs you can easily sell the med packs for somatic gel and make large ones. Also if you have the max inventory you can have say 10 Large med packs and 10 ammo boxes and you'll be sorted for most encounters with 5 slots spare for any medium med packs you find.

NOTE: An easy way to unlock all inventory spaces is to equip the 'legendary engineer suit' from DS1. You unlock this after completing the game once, so if you're doing this mode you should have it. Once the spaces are unlocked you can switch back to whatever suit you prefer.

4. If you only use the plasma cutter or as I used the Evangeliser (Pre order DLC weapon) you can quickly upgrade it right from the start. My evangeliser had 8x 2+ 2+ cuircuits by chapter 7, and I had a fully upgraded RIG by Chapter 9.

5. Also save up your ration seals till you get 60; always sending your bots out to get resources from resource spots (you'll hear a noise chime). You can then go to a bench, select downloadable content (Y button) and buy an Epic weapon & resource pack with the seals (X button). This will give you more resources than you'll ever really need on top of what you find in the game.

1x Epic pack contains:
240 tungsten
800 semiconductors
2000 scrap metal
400 somatic gel
200 transducers

Keep your health and ammo stocked up and this is no-where near a hard achievement.

Using Cheakpoint restart helped me to retain health and resources. If you feel that you could have done better in a certain area, maybe coz you lost to much health or used to much ammo...checkpoint restart because you will do better

The DLC stuff and the previous completion awards did not unlock for me at the first bench but at a later one, for some weird reason. Can't really remember when exactly but as I am currently in chapter 4 it must have been in chapter 2 or 3 latest.

A great place to rack up resources in this mode (and any others) is the drill room on chapter 10. Just survive all three rounds of the drill killing all enemies. Once all enemies are dead and the drill has stopped, collect all of the items the enemies dropped. Save and quite. Rinse and repeat. When you load your save you will start in the area just before you have to start the generator.

Triple G Andy is absolutely correct. This difficulty setting is much easier than you would think. I would not stress over it, and I certainly wouldn't buy any additional content. By the final few hours of the game, you will practically be swimming in crafting materials.

Ok question. Maybe someone will know why this is. I cannot build good quality circuits from the start but I got a 100% completion before I started this mode. Thoughts?

Ration seals: When you get 30, save & quit and go to the weapon crafting arena. Get a 30 pack at the bench there and if it doesn't have the items you want, do a restart checkpoint - you'll get your 30 seals back and you can try again as many times as you want. Then save & quit and reload last save - you'll resume at roughly the last story checkpoint though, not the exact point you save & quit.

Scavenger bots: If you're a while off a full on scavenge point (a guide will show most locations https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/xbox360/672893-dead-space-3/fa...), just deploy the bots anyway - they'll still bring in a decent amount of resources.

Resource farming: This is a great guide for farming resources, it works in Survival no problems. I once got 6 blocks on tungsten on 1 run! https://youtu.be/Xixw9z_-91Q In Survival, EVERYTHING except ammo will spawn here.

I would suggest on saving your ration seals for the Ultra pack, not the Epic. Here's why. Ultra comes with half as many resources at half the price of Epic, pretty much equal value by half. Epic gives you two Mark-V parts with the chance of a third. Ultra gives you one with the chance of two. You have double the chances of getting a third Mark-V part by buying two Ultra instead of one Epic. And if you're really lucky, you could end up getting two parts in a row from two Ultra, a total of four Mark-V parts for 60 Ration Seals, as oppose to only the possible three for one Epic.

Alrighty, well I figured it out. You progressivly unlock better and better circuits as you go on, but it is worth mentioning that if you got the materials, build the tre pound seven ( I think that's what it's called.) Has several +2 +2 circuits. After you build it, you cannot just take the circuits off, you have to disassemble the weapon or you wont get the circuits for some reason. Was nice to have those really early on.

Follow the above guide as it pretty much has everything you need to know but 1 thing I can offer is a trick that you can do if you choose to, it will make the play through a lot easier.

You can actually get the Devils Horn (Hand cannon) in this play through.

Firstly you must have finished Classic Mode, then you need to go to the dashboard and clear your memory cache, after this is done disconnect from Xbox live so the game can't offer you updates.

When you get back onto dead space pick your classic mode save and choose new game +. From here pick Pure Survival. Now play through the game offline until you hit chapter 3s bench, BAM you'll have the devils horn, after getting it you can re connect to Xbox live if you so please.

You can also get the horns if you have started the game. When you jump into your game, it will give you the message that they have been deposited into your bench.

Patched with DLC

By II Kazz II on 13 Mar 2013 22:12
i can confirm this works if you do not download the DLC. Apparently if you download the DLC, and play, however, it puts something in your saves to mark it. So if you download the DLC, do a newgame+, it'll put a flag or something in all new saves where this won't work. Therefore, you have to have a game save that doesn't have this DLC flag in it. It doesn't matter if you delete the DLC, if you ever played a game with the DLC on your hard drive, it'll flag the saves.

Hopefully this message gets to new players so they don't download the DLC until after they have completed all their games.

If you are like me and downloaded the DLC before reading this, you can delete your save and DLC, play classic mode to unlock devil horns, and then complete both difficulties before re-downloading the DLC. As long as you have a save on both Hardcore and Pure Survival with the horns, you can download the DLC any time after that.

If you are running low on med packs something I did was load up ch 8 because in the very beggining the game offers you the only medium med pack that you dont have to create. Just pick it up save and quit then reload. It should only take ten minutes to fill up your inventory by doing a little farming, this really helps if you are hurting for resources at the end of the game.

Ok doing this is a work around to the recent patch brought on by the Awakened DLC. If you have already beaten classic mode and unlocked the devil horns, then you're going to want to delete the DLC off the hard drive. This is where it becomes a slight pain in the ass. You will have to start a new game under a new save slot. Thankfully enough, because classic mode has been cleared already, all the endgame bonuses will transfer over. Set it to casual and blaze through the main game again to unlock new game+ (theres no need to play through classic mode again). After doing that, you can continue on like before with clearing the system cache and playing until chapter 3 to get the devil horns in pure survival mode and hardcore mode. Hope this helps

Just in case this helps anyone...

I'd completed the game on Normal in June 2012 WITHOUT the DLC being downloaded (it wasn't available at that time).

I started a New Game+ from the above save WITH the DLC installed on my Hard Drive and completed the game again in November 2013 on Classic to unlock the Devil's Horns.

I cleared the cache (as per the other guides) and started Pure Survival offline, got to the bench on Chapter 3 and no Devil's Horns.

I deleted the DLC, cleared the cache again (just in case) but then couldn't access the Pure Survival save or the Classic save because the DLC was missing. I could however access the Normal save from 2012 and start a New Game+ on Pure Survival, again offline. The Devil's Horns were waiting from me when I got to Chapter 3.

I've yet to try this for Hardcore mode but will update when I do.

Pure Survival mode is unlocked after completing the game once on any difficulty. The difficulty is set to Hard, and enemies do not drop ammo or healing items, only resources. Ammo and Healing Items can only be acquired by crafting at a workbench. Apart from bonus rewards, DLCs, and the Dead Space Legends suit, nothing else carries over and you'll start the game from scratch.

Completing Pure Survival will unlock MK II Overclocked Weapon Parts, and a Resource Bonus that carries over to other game modes.

If you ever find yourself short of resources, know that resources will always respawn when you save and quit, then reload your last save again. Scavenger Bots can be repeatedly sent out to gather resources as long as you like, and you can purchase more using the acquired Ration Seals or real-life currency. Utilize the Devil's Horn exploit and the Invisible Door/Elevator Barrier trick and you will find the game a walk in the park. Details of these exploits and other survival tips can be found in the Hardcore Guide.

In this mode, you will have to create everything yourself: cartridges, first aid kits, stasis, chains, and all the modules necessary to create weapons. This mode is not as difficult as it seems; the resources available are 2 times greater (at face value) than in the classic and hardcore modes. Throughout the game, sometimes you still come across pharmacies, but there are very few such places. Always keep scrap metal in reserve, otherwise you risk being left without ammo. Do not forget about the bugs of the game (that after recordings/artifacts, resources/first aid kits/stasis appear, there are still places where you have to run through the same places several times). If you have unlocked the “Devil Horns” (red gloves) for the classic mode, do not rejoice, they will not be given to you for this mode or hardcore.

The game in this mode is not difficult, in my opinion it is even more interesting. I can recommend going in a co-op, because... Each player is given their own resources and everyone can help each other in any way they can. Bonus missions: everything here is 50/50 - if you can cope with crowds of necromorphs, then you can go without fear. The only small catch is that in the end you can either get a real treasure, or you can get a piece of butter, it all depends on luck. Same thing with the tungsten torsion shaft. In general, everything is done at your own peril and risk.

The red glove will appear on the CMS Roanoke machine. That is, we’re getting the unitologists off the Moon honestly, the first two lunar machines won’t open the gauntlet.

also, if you discard all the patches, you can collect endless resources in chapter 11 after the battle with the spider, when you enter the room with a video projector which shows, the principle of operation is the same as in chapter 8 described in the (video) tips above, i.e. go out wait for the door to close and come in again! but this place is more convenient because the resources here are respawned in TWO places in the room!!!! and you will quickly get the resources you need!!! For example, I dialed at 8 and at 11 PS DO NOT REMOVE THE PATCH if you purchased the Awekened DLC, the patch is stuck to it (if the game is on disk) and when you remove the patch from the DLC, the game will not read your save! and you will have to go through it again offline (it’s easier without a patch)!! or go with the pack to be honest, but then you won’t have the most powerful weapon in this mode - gloves (devil horns), everything described also applies to the Hardcore mode.

IMPORTANT!!!

If you completed the classic mode with ANY ADDITIONS (bot accelerator, sniper kit and others), then when the patch is removed (currently 1.02) you will not be able to load saves.

But there is a cure: we just copy the add-on files without the patch installed and that’s it, you can continue playing.
