How to unlock the Ghosts of the Past achievement in Dead Space 3 - Definitive Guide

There are 3 missions that you need your coop partner for.
The first is in Chapter 4 and is called CSM Brusilov.
The second is in Chapter 11 and is called Archaeology
The third is in Chapter 14 and is called Marker Containment
TIP: In Marker Containment, it may seem like the enemies are endless and you will be fighting forever, bit in the room where Carver gets sent, there will be a marker. You need to shoot and destroy that marker, and you will be sent back to normal land. In the final room, the marker will be on both Carver's and Isaac's side. Destroy them both.

At any point you may go to Chapter Select and boot up the level right at the start of the coop mission. Simply invite your partner in and get killing! Get to the end of the mission, and as soon as it says it is complete, save and quit, then boot up the next coop mission, re-invite your partner, and rinse and repeat.

ALSO! Do not forget to get those collectibles in the coop missions. It would be best to not have to go back through just because you missed one collectible.

No you do not, as long as you do those 3 missions, you get the achievement, no matter who you play as

Also don't forget to pick up any collectible since they are COOP EXCLUSIVE if you are going for the 100% achievement!

Haha, yeah we got pretty screwed on that one too, pretty frustrating. Only tip I can offer is when Carver gets sent into those sequences, destroy the marker asap.

Good lord, did the final room on Marker Containment take roughly twenty minutes during that hallucination? That was utterly ridiculous.

Yes, if you start a new playthrough everything will carry over, but it has to be on the same save file. So if you go to Classic, Pure Survival, or Hardcore, nothing will carry over

Yes, if you start any of those, your stats will reset completely, starting you back at 0.0%

The 3rd marker world thingy was stupid, I have not died so many times before I hate the ghosty screaming pack crap. Will try again tomorrow and try for killing the marker. Thanks for the tips I will tell you how I get on.

Don't see what people are moaning so much about it for, knocked it out of the park on my pure survival run (two attempts on the destroying marker, but it went quick)
ironically, on my normal run I had no fricking idea what to do for that last part (me being carver then, was Issac when I got the achievement)

It's not that it's hard, it's just something you wouldn't expect to have to do.

Demon I do not think you can get all collectibles on classic. The weapon parts do not show up on classic and circuits do not show up on pure survival. I am pretty sure you can only get all the collectibles on standard or hardcore. Great guide.

i do all the stuff ond act 4 coop and it still doesnt add to my completion. save and quit and stuff, and still when i check my progress its not marked as done. could i be doing something wrong ( i guess not, chapter 4 coop is pretty straight forward) or is it bugged?

When were you saving and quitting? For the mission in Chapter 4, it doesn't count as completed once you open the storage box. You need to actually leave the entire CSM Brusilov in order for the mission to count as completed

Excellent guide. The Marker Containment mission is bullshit, though. I have no problem with the "endless enemies" (Enervator with a few modifications does wonders), but how the hell am I supposed to know to destroy the marker? I thought the whole point was that it was Carver's problem, and he was doing the "fighting".

I need some clarification about collectibles in co-op missions. For example, if my partner picks up something, I won't be able to get anymore? Or collectibles are shared between both players?

I'd like to add that if you forget to do the coop only mission in chapter 4 called ''Brusilov'' , it is possible to go back to it if you've allready arrived in chapter 5. It will still count towards the completion of chapter 4.

Thanks for the hint man, although it is also possible to go to the menu, and select the co-op mission right from the Chapter Select, making backtracking not even necessary =]

Just completed this solo with two consoles/accounts. Its a little tough at times even on casual doing it solo but managable. Just level up your Carver characters suit to withstand attacks as you go along, and on the final mission when you split off into your own sections focus on getting through carvers parts as fast as possible with Isaac hiding and you should be fine.

So collectables you get in ur first run and coop carry over to any other runs of the game? After doin normal and coop run i was guna do a collectable run just checking i dont have to re get anything.

If i already found a collectable do they stay collected or appear but wont count toward total found just checking before i get into it and miss the coop ones. Also do you personally have to collect them or will ur coop partner geting all of them be ok.

This might seem similar to Sargeant Renkor's "guide" but I've got some things to clarify and other things to say.

Like Sargeant Renkor said:
"There are 3 missions that you need your coop partner for.
The first is in Chapter 4 and is called CSM Brusilov.
The second is in Chapter 11 and is called Archaeology
The third is in Chapter 14 and is called Marker Containment"

In the Marker Containment Side mission there are 3 parts where Carver fights inside of his own mind while Issac is ambushed by black hardened necromorphs (and yes they are endless until Carver completes the event in his mind). You may be having trouble while carver and here is some good advice. At the beginning of each event (as Carver) don't stop running. run around (to the right side) all the shadow minions, heal up if you get hurt (it does use a health pack in your inventory) and towards the couch where the marker and your wife are. The first time you get to the couch. The event will end.
NOTE: The enemies in Carvers mind are also endless. Hence why you should just run around.

The second event will occur and Carver's wife will be sitting on the couch. This particular event seems like it's timed. IMPORTANT: ******Go as close to the couch as u possibly can and the shadow minions will just stand still and wont attack you.******** If you seem to be waiting a long time (as I've not yet verified if this event is timed or not) then there should be a marker basically touching you on the left of the couch, shoot that until the event ends.

Now the third is the most confusing for people because at no point does it ever indicate that you should shoot the marker and the shadow minions do a lot of damage and of course are endless. What you must do is shoot the marker until it explodes. The same spot that was mentioned in event 2 also works for event 3. Stand in between the couch and the marker and you'll be safe from the shadow minions while being able to just point back trigger mash that damn marker.

***THINGS ABOUT THE MISSIONS THAT YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW***: If you play through the entire mission then you get little extras that you wouldn't get if you just jumped straight into the mission from the menu.

1st - and most obvious, you get the extra dialogue exchanged from Issac and Carver.

2nd - There is actually an extra cutscene that introduces the 3rd Co-Op mission to you.

3rd - Some things that carver sees in the missions are different then what Issac sees. (Same thing goes for Issac seeing different things than Carver)

4th - There are audio logs in the Co-Op missions that have different messages depending on what character you're playing. (Ex. As Issac you hear a man laughing over and over and over again. As Carver you hear a message from his wife.) Things like that.

I had a bad witness about the availability of Co-op Mission: Archeology. When accessing the related Co-op door initially in Chapter 10, the game notifies you that you should invite someone in order to play this Co-op Mission. No matter what I tried to get it started, this Co-op Mission was not to be able to be played during Chapter 10. This is a flaw in game design. And, this is inconvenient.

Accessing the co-op optional missions are pretty straight forward with the exception of Chapter 11 & 14 (the final 2) which have specific triggers. Chapter 11 seems to only open right after the room where you previously destroyed the big drill. Chapter 14 the co-op door is unavailable until after you get both "Rosetta" parts from paleontology.

Its best to start and play the entire chapters on co-op from the beginning of them or in the case that you've already passed the sections of the chapter that triggers the co-op missions, just choose chapter select from the main menu and start the entire chapter over in co-op.

Online Trophy. See The Explorer trophy.

The game has only 3 missions for playing together with a partner (co-op mode):

  • in Part 4 - the mission "CMS "Brusilov" ("CMS "Brusilov");
  • in Part 11 - mission "Archaeology";
  • in Part 14 - the mission "Obelisk Storage" ("Marker Containment").
At any time, you can go to the chapter selection and immediately start completing the desired co-op mission.

Just invite a friend to the game. Upon completion of the missions, save and exit. Choose the next co-op mission, call a friend again. Repeat 3 times =)

!!!Do not forget!!! collect items (artifacts, audio recordings, drawings, etc.) in co-op missions - they also count towards collecting trophies =)

in the 3rd co-op mission (chapter 14), the player controlling the carver will catch glitches 2 times. Until the glitches end, the necros will respawn endlessly, which can be a problem on something more complex than hard. In the first batch of glitches this is cured by the carver running to the marker, in the third - by shooting the marker.

In the last mission to get the trophy, when you find yourself inside Carver's mind, surrounded by a paranoid interior and a bunch of necromorph shadows, run and shoot the obelisks. In total, Carver will have three blackouts; in the last one, you will have to shoot at the obelisk for quite a long time, while fighting off enemies attacking from all sides.
