Mindless Prey

Mindless Prey

Kill the Hive Mind.

How to unlock the Mindless Prey achievement in Dead Space - Definitive Guide

This achievement cannot be missed, as it is earned from killing the final boss of the game.

At the end of Chapter 12 you will be pitted against the Hive Mind. Its fight consists of 5 phases, with phase 1, 3, and 4 being the longer phases.

Phase 1: Shoot each of the 5 glowing bulbs surrounding the mouth of the Hive Mind while avoiding any projectiles it throws at you, as well as avoiding the tentacle slams it will do. The tentacle slams are telegraphed and can easily be avoided by moving to the left or right before the Hive Mind slams it down. As for the projectiles it spews from its mouth, they deal damage to you on direct hits, but otherwise act as temporary walls on the arena to hinder your movement and in turn making it harder for you to avoid the tentacle slams. They can largely be ignored as they will eventually despawn (you can destroy them with damage, but they have a sizeable health pool that just ends up wasting your ammo). Once all the bulbs surrounding the mouth of the Hive Mind are destroyed, phase 2 begins.

Phase 2: The Hive Mind is invulnerable during this phase, and necromorphs will begin flooding the field. This is a simple case of murdering everything in sight until the Hive Mind becomes active again and phase 3 begins.

Phase 3: The Hive Mind will start by exposing its stomach to you, revealing 5 hearts that must be destroyed. Throughout this phase the Hive Mind will stop its attacks and reveal its stomach to you, use this time to destroy another heart until all 5 are destroyed. The Hive Mind will start with dividing the arena in half with a line of acid, then repeatedly target you with tentacle slams (alternating which arm it slams with). The acid damages you when walked through and applies some damage over time but it can healed through. For this phase simply stand where you have room to move and sidestep the tentacle slams as they come (you can be standing still up to the point the Hive Mind starts bringing its tentacle down and still sidestep out of the way in time).

Phase 4: Once the Hive Mind is down to 2 or less hearts, it will slightly change its attack pattern. This time it will spew a line of acid at your current location three times. The first two lines of acid dissolve after a couple seconds (safe to walk through once the Hive Mind begins spewing the next acid attack) but the third line of acid stays while the Hive Mind begins another round of alternating tentacle slams. Essentially its phase 3 again, but you get to choose where the line of acid goes. Once the last two hearts are destroyed the Hive Mind will go into its final phase.

Phase 5: This final phase begins with the Hive Mind grabbing you by the foot and raising you into the air, while exposing one last bulb in the center of its mouth to you. Simply destroy this bulb while being dangled around and you have killed the Hive Mind.

The video was captured during an Impossible difficulty playthrough.

The final boss fight is broken up into 4 phases. In the first phase, shoot the weak points around its mouth while avoiding its tentacles and the pods it spits out. In the second phase, clear out all the necromorphs and collect ammo/items as needed.

During the third phase, shoot the weak points inside its belly when they are exposed. Between exposures, the hive mind will spit trails of acid down the area (only 1 active at a time). Bait it into spitting on one of the sides to give yourself more room. During the 3rd and 4th wave of acid trails, the Hive Mind will spit acid 3x each. It will also slam down its tentacles 4x where you are standing, so plan to run from one side of the safe area to the other (back corner to middle-side works best).

In the final phase, shoot the weak point in the Hive Mind's mouth as you are hanging from its tentacle. It will be difficult to hit while it moves, but it will slow down and move in near the end.

Story related and cannot be missed

The final boss in the game, the Hive Mind has unfortunately not been significantly improved from its original outing back in 2008. As such, this proves a fairly easy, if monotonous boss fight, split into three main phases.

The first phase will have you shooting at the five weak spots around the Hive Mind’s mouth, while avoiding its tentacle attacks. This is a simple case of strafing right when it lifts its tentacle to attack to your left, and then vice versa, until you’ll hit all the weak spots. After this, a wave of Necromorphs will be summoned, but you’ve been dealing with them all game, so you know what to do.

The next phase sees the Hive Mind firing acid that stays on the field, making strafing to avoid the tentacles just a tad harder. Try to bait the hive mind into firing its acid on either the far left or far right, which gives you more room to work with, and shoot at one of the five weak points when it opens up. Do this five times and the boss will be nearly down.

Finally, the Hive Mind will pick you up, and you’ll need to shoot the final weak point. One shot will do it, but it’s surprisingly tough, given the weird camera angle that you’re given. The contact beam is a good choice here, with its consistent damage and big laser beam making it easier to track the weak spot.

Take it down, and the achievement is yours. Congratulations!

This boss is the size of one of Resistance 2's bosses. It's pretty epic. Good thing it's easy though. When you start the battle start strafing left and right dodging the tentacles that come at you. First, aim for the 5 yellow blobs on top and shoot all those, once those are gone shoot the ones in his rib cage. After they're all gone it's dead, simple as that.

The Hive Mind is the final boss in the game. The Hive Mind with try to smash you with its tentacles. When it slams its left arm run to the right, and when it drops its right arm run to the left. After destroying the 3 of the 5 glowing blobs on The Hive Mind's head it will grab Isaac and hold him in mid-air. Destroy 1 of the glowing yellow blobs to cause it to drop you, take note however that you will be upside down and so your aim will be reversed. Once it drops you you must destroy 5 more glowing yellow blobs on The Hive Mind's chest. Once they've been destroyed The Hive Mind will be defeated.

See Bosses for tips.

To get the trophy you need to kill the final boss, which, by the way, is very easy if you know his behavior. When I played on difficult, the boss seemed a little difficult to me and, having collected a bunch of first aid kits and cartridges, I (at that time I played the game only with a plasma cutter ) defeated the boss with my last breath. When I went through it at maximum, I killed the boss the first time, very quickly, did not spend a single first aid kit and practically did not waste any ammo.

To defeat the boss you need to use targeted long-range weapons, so if you are not going to replay the save again after completing the game to get a trophy for pumping up all weapons, then if you have a flamethrower , pipe cutter , laser rifle and power pistol , it is better to sell these weapons, and Use the money to buy first aid kits and upgrade the damage to targeted weapons.

Boss behavior:

First you need to shoot at the weak spots (yellow circles) on his face. There are five of them in total, and after killing each one, the boss seems to scream at you, bringing his face closer and leaving it in a motionless position for a short time - this moment can be used to destroy the next weak point. After you destroy two of them, the boss will grab you, trying to swallow you - during this time you should have time to destroy the other three weak points. If you have a power cutter with full damage, then even on maximum difficulty you will destroy the weak point with one shot, so when you are grabbed, you will have enough time to aim well and shoot three times. If your weapon does not destroy one circle with one blow, then I advise you to first weaken all five circles on the boss’s face, so that later, when he grabs you, it would be enough for you to hit each weak point several times.

After you destroy the weak points on the boss’s face, an area in his chest area will open, covered by peculiar ribs - there are five more weak points there. After you destroy one, the ribs will close the area and you will need to run a bit from the tentacles, after which the ribs will open again. Running from the tentacles is very easy: stand against the left or right wall; when you see the boss swinging, run to the opposite wall, then back. The trick is that he hits the place he planned late. If you fall under the first tentacle, you will not have time to get up before the second one hits you. At the maximum difficulty level, if you do not have 8 health points and a level 5 suit, you will die.

As with the weak points on the face, these die from a single shot of the power cutter at full damage, so if you don't miss, you'll only need ten charges of this weapon to defeat the boss.

If you hesitate, the boss will release two fat men towards you, from which, if you get into the belly, larvae come out very inopportunely. But even if you don’t hit, you’ll kill him by cutting off his limbs; the tentacles of the main boss hitting him can “tear the belly” of such a monster.

In my opinion, the easiest way to operate is with a pulse rifle. Firstly, you don’t need any filigree precision for one shot. Secondly, getting hit with one shot while dangling upside down is still extreme, especially with the slowness of aiming any weapon in principle. I meant about unrealistic difficulty, because it seemed to me that they attract you faster there. And a pumped-up pulse destroys any point with a burst of ten rounds. Given its rate of fire, it seems to me much simpler.

The Hive Brain is a giant monster that you will meet at the end of Chapter 12. Kill him to unlock this trophy.
