Complete Level 6 in Zero-G Basketball

How to unlock the Z-Baller achievement in Dead Space - Definitive Guide

Zero-G Basketball, or ‘Z-Ball’, is located at the start of Chapter 10: End of Days. As you enter the crew Common Room, your RIG will direct you into the Zero-G Gym, then into the Locker Room and Showers and then into the next room. Your RIG will want you to take the elevator off to your left, but cannot use it because you need a power source. Instead use the circular door directly ahead of you where you find the power source.

This is the Basketball area and in the distance there are 4 (circular) hoops in a square orientation; coloured blue, yellow red and green. There will be a console asking you whether you would like to start a game, yes please!

But before you start the game, make sure you do two things:

1) move further into the game area because 3 Lurkers show up to play - they need dismembering because you can’t have them shooting at you whilst you’re shooting hoops!

2) remove the power source so it doesn’t get in your way.

Once the area is cleared, enemies will not respawn, so you’re free to keep playing until you complete the challenge.

The idea of the game is to use your Kinesis to pick up a Basketball which will be deposited from from one of three holes at random, (upper left, upper right or directly above), and shoot into the hoops.

Gameplay: don’t be too close to the hoops, stay back nearer to the console. There are two ways to play and it’s your choice - in the air or on the ground.

If you choose to go in the air, use your gravity boots to become more centralised with the hoops. Stay central and do not try to move about, instead rely on your aiming skills. The other choice is to keep your boots on the ground but it is best to use the platform forward of the activation panel.

You need to complete Level 6 of Zero-G Basketball for the achievement which will unlock 6 reward lockers. The points are (I don’t believe it varies between difficulties but I know medium to impossible are the same):

5 points for a hoop, 10 points if you score in a hoop that is lit (or goal as the game calls them). Be sure to aim for the lit hoops over a random one - they are what nets the points and makes this achievement easier.

- Round 1: 15 Points - just throw some hoops.
- Round 2: 40 Points - hoops start to light.
- Round 3: 70 Points - grates start to close.
- Round 4: 110 Points - cont’d.
- Round 5: 160 Points - cont’d.
- Round 6: 220 Points - sometimes grates can close 3 at a time.

So Zero-G Basketball does have timed rounds and will become progressively more difficult, but it is a fun sideline that was kept and improved on from the original game.

Don’t forget to claim the 6 reward cabinets, they are worth it, even I’m sure on Impossible difficulty. Below is a visual guide if you’re struggling.
Good luck!

It isn't REACH Level 6, it is BEAT Level 6. This achievement really just irritated me for the rest of the game.

Thanks for your feedback, I have amended that wording to ensure clarity.

Look for the hoops which are glowing brighter than the rest. The bright one will be worth 10 points rather than the standard 5.

Apologies, but it has always said that in the guide.

I beat level 6 and scored 285 on Medium yet the achievement has not popped? Does anyone have an idea why?

Thank's a lot! This was far easier than I remember! I got it first try, even with failing some shots!

Got it today.
The easiest way for me was after the start to go to the middle platform and stay on the back side. Then just aim for the ball and directly aim for a hole even if the ball is not yet at your position. This way you will save half a second or so per ball. Shoot the ball at the hole even if it is still on the way to you. Prioritize the lit ones.
The launch for most of the balls will get faster when you reach higher rounds. So you can remain in the middle what makes the aiming for the holes even faster.
If you are fast enough you will build up your timer and it should be @1Min. or even over 1 Min. at round 5. Latest at round 6.
You will have ~1Min. (which is more then enough time) to reach the 220 pts. needed. I even got 275 pts.

Good luck :)

You’ll find the Zero-G basketball court near the beginning of Chapter 10, in the Crew Quarters. You’ll need to enter the court regardless, in order to grab a battery, but you’ll want to stick around to get this achievement.

The first time you start Zero-G Basketball, you’ll get attacked by necromorphs, so don’t worry about properly playing this time. Once the necromorphs are defeated, restart the Zero-G basketball session, and attempt to complete Level 6.

The best way to do this is to float in Zero-G yourself near the middle of the room, making sure you have a good visual of all three pipes where the basketball can be ejected from, even when aiming your weapon. When the basketball is ejected, quickly grab it with Kinesis, and fire it into one of the four coloured rings.

Speed is of the essence here, as you’ll want to get points as quickly as possible. But you’ll also want to keep an eye on the four different coloured rings. After Level 1, you should notice that certain rings sometimes light up, normally after every other shot. Aim for these lit rings to get ten points, rather than five. Also, as you go up the levels, some of the rings will be covered up, so aim at the open rings instead.

The reason we recommend floating in Zero-G, rather than standing on the court, is that it’s easier to aim more precisely using both the right stick for your camera, and the left stick to strafe left, right, up, and down. You might not get this on your first go, but it’s easy enough once you get the hang of it. Get a total of 220 points to complete Level 6 and get the achievement.

On level 10 you will come to a mini-game on a Zero G Basketball court. You must beat the high score or tie it to move on to the next level. All I did was start the game, jump to the very front wooden platform, shoot 20 goals at level 1, wait, at level 2 shoot 21 and wait, level 3 shoot 22, wait, level 4 shoot 23, and so on until level 6. Complete that level and you will unlock this achievement. Don't bother getting multipliers.

Missable! This minigame can be found in Chapter 10. The idea of the game is to use Kinesis on the basketball and shoot it through one of the 3 holes. It takes a few tries to figure it out.

Z-Baller Tips & Notes:
  • You can end a level early by exiting through the door
  • Only 16 points are required to beat a level, the equivalent of landing on 3 lit-up pads and scoring 2 goals
(Thanks to Athantos for the tips)

Below is a video showing how to do it:

In Chapter 10 you will find a court for playing Zero-G Basketball. You will need to pick up a story item there, so you don't miss it. The point of the game is to score the maximum number of points and move to the next level. The easiest way to win this trophy is to jump onto the closest platform, roll 20 goals for level 1, then wait, roll 21 at level 2, then roll 22 for level 3, and so on until you reach level 6. If you have any difficulties, watch the video .
Note: For each completed level, a new box will open, not far from the court upon completion, do not forget to pick up items from them, among the useful ones there will be a node and a Ruby Semiconductor.

To move to the second level, it is enough to throw 15 balls for the first time, not 20. On the second, 16, etc.. it’s easier.

I received a trophy by simply playing all 6 levels, that is, I didn’t break my record at level 6, but they gave me the trophy.

I’ll add to the previous one - to move to the next level you just need to score 20 points at both the first and other levels.

At the end of the sixth level I only had 18 points. They gave me the trophy without any problems, taking into account the fact that I scored unevenly. Level 1 - 20, 2-23, 3-26, 4-28, 5-23, 6-18
