How to unlock the Seanchaidh achievement in Dear Esther: Landmark Edition - Definitive Guide

DEAR ESTHER SEANCHAIDH GUIDE

Hi everyone. Welcome to my Seanchaidh/Walkthrough achievement guide for Dear Esther. This has been verified on two separate accounts by myself on 30th June 2019 and is 100% relevant.

There has been confusion in the comments, so I will walk you through each Voice Over Point (VOP), rather than just list the missable ones.

I will list each VOP with the following:

VOP number
(M) = Missable or (U) = Unmissable
A description of each VOP
A percentage of where you should be after each VOP

I recommend the player goes for the Directors commentary achievement and has a fair idea of where to go. That being said, the game is pretty linear for the most part.

This achievement can only be worked on whilst the Director commentary option has been disabled in the main menu after you press start

*** Very Important ***
After each VOP do not move an inch. This reason for this is, if you walk to the next VOP whilst the previous one is still ongoing, you will not trigger the next. Yes, it will take you a little longer, but it's easier to keep track if you hold back.

VOICE OVER POINTS

To begin press start and disable the director's commentary so there is no tick in the square

Chapter 1: The Lighthouse - 10 Voice Over Points

1) (U) At the very beginning as you spawn in, do not move - 2%

2) (M) From your starting position, turn left to see two paths. Take the right path upwards and follow it up to the very end, passing a steep drop on your left as you go, to trigger the VOP - 5%

3) (U) Drop down at the point you have just passed and follow the path until you trigger the VOP near a set of stairs to your right - 8%

4) (M) Do not go up the stairs yet. Turn around and keep going straight to the end of the beach where you will trigger a VOP near a crevice at the end - 11%

5) (U) Back to the stairs from #3, follow the path up to trigger an easy VOP - 14%

6) (U) From #5 just keep walking forwards and this VOP will trigger- 17%

7) (U) From #6 just follow your path and this VOP will trigger - 20%

8) (U) From #7 follow your path, this VOP will trigger once the path starts heading downwards. - 23%

9) (M) From #8 you will see a cave entrance straight ahead but slightly off to the left. Before you do a U-turn and continue, head to the cave entrance to trigger a VOP - 26%

10) (U) Turn around from the cave entrance and follow the path upwards to trigger the next VOP - 29%

You should be at 29% progress by the end of this level. - 100% verified by myself

Chapter 2: The Buoy - 11 Voice Over Points

1) (U) At the very beginning, do not move VOP will trigger 32%

2) (M) From your starting point , with the tanker on the beach to your right. Follow a steep path to the left to trigger a VOP near the very end of the path - 35%

3) (M) After passing through a container on the beach. Take a sharp left out of the container and follow the path to trigger the VOP at a dead end - 38%

4) (U/M) Turn back , walk by the container and stick to the right to trigger this VOP. Sticking to the left as you turn back from #3 may not trigger this VOP so be very careful - 41%

5) (M) This is a strange one. Make your way forward from #4 and you should eventually end up next to a huge pit on your right. If you're on the path above, it wont trigger the VOP. You will need to be really close to the pit to activate the VOP trigger point. This is easily missed - 44%

6) (U) Follow the path upwards from #5, you will see a house in the distance, the VOP is on your way up - 47%

7) (U) Moving closer the house, this is on your path upwards. The VOP should trigger halfway up the hill - 50%

The next one is 100% missable. Thank you to all that commented on this in the comment section

8) (M) Follow the path from the above to notice a house on top of a hill. Go through the doorway of the house to trigger a VOP near a dining table. If you take the entrance at the side of the house, you will miss this VOP - 52%

9) (U) Leave the house, make your way down the path for this easy VOP - 55%

10 (U) Same path as #9 right at the bottom, VOP will trigger as you're about to make a right turn - 58%

11) (U) Walk straight ahead from #10 - VOP will trigger near the cave entrance 61%

You should be at 61% by the end of this level. - 100% verified by myself

Chapter 3: The Caves - 4 Voice Over Points

1) (U) At the very start of the level, do no move, let the VOP finish before you move an inch. A cutscene will take place where you look to the water, you are free to move from here - 64%

2) (M) After leaving the starting area, you will come to an island with a ton of rocks and a circular path going around it. Off to the left will trigger a VOP but it didn't count on my tracker. Going right won't trigger the VOP, please note that this could be a hidden VOP. Note that this may affect the unlocking of your achievement if you don't pick this up. although your tracker doesn't move

3) (U) After passing by a huge pit with water flowing, pass through a glowing orange cave with a candle. Follow the linear path until you reach a new area. VOP triggered exactly where you entered - 67%

4) (U) Walk across the bridge from the above and follow the path upwards. When you enter an area with glowing mushrooms, VOP will trigger - 70%

You will be at 70% by the end of this level. - 100% verified by myself

Chapter 4: The Beacon - 10 Voice Over Points

1) (M) Take the left path from the beginning to trigger VOP, if you go right, this will not trigger - 73%

2) (U) Follow the path from the above VOP until you come to a beach area with candles and wooden structures in the sand - 76%

3) (U) Keep walking forward until you see 2 caves. The second cave has candles and tires. Just past this is the next VOP - 79%

4) (U) Same path as above keep moving forward, you will see a concrete garage structure not far away - 82%

5) (U) Do a u-turn at the garage above - On the path upwards VOP will trigger, very easy - 85%

6) (U) After dropping down from the above path, VOP triggered on the way - 88%

7) (U) On your path, there is writing on walls nearby. VOP triggered in this path - 91%

8) (M) As you begin your final ascent, there will be a small bunker off to your right, slightly off of your path. A VOP will trigger around here. If you go through the metal gate, you've gone too far - 94%

9) (U) Through the metal gate VOP triggered on your path to the beacon - 97%

10) (U) Follow the path, VOP and achievement will unlock before you reach the beacon - 100%

Thank you for taking time to read this updated guide. Massive thank you to everyone who advised about the missable VOP in the house in Chapter 2.

If there is anything in the guide that you don't understand, shoot me a message or leave a comment

Great Guide, it helps me a lot to find my last voice over in chapter 1;)
The Idea to write down the percentage for each chapter is really good.

Thank you

In the third chapter, the narration didn't start until I entered the circular caves part where the singing starts and so you could miss that one.

Alright, Im confused. I have 88% and I can't figure out which one I am missing. I have been to all the chapters except chapter 3 trying to figure this out. But, what i am confused about is the guy above says back tracking won't trigger them. Does this mean passing them in a level and going back to it? Or does this mean reloading chapters does not reset them either and I need a new game? Because I have not had any of the old ones trigger while replaying chapters...

This was an odd one, it popped for me in chapter 2 of my second play through on what should have been a main path one I shouldn't and couldn't have missed the 1st time. It was directly in front of the cave at the end of the chapter were he speaks of his broken leg.

I triggered 97% on my first round through...sigh, time for a replay. I stopped when he talked, but I only thought that might be a good idea in the second chapter. Quick question, do I only have to replay until I find the one I missed or do you have to find 100% in a single play-through?

I finally got this on my third play/walkthrough. The 3rd-to-last voice trigger is just long enough that if you go straight to the second-to-last one (where the path turns right, into stairs which go onto the beach) it will not trigger because the 3rd-to-last one is still playing. The second-to-last one not triggering caused the last trigger outside of the cave to not happen.

The tracking is definitely broken and this guide only makes it worse. I was stuck at around 60% and at the end of the game it jumped up to 88%. I was keeping track of what percent I was at the end of each chapter, but what does it matter if the tracking if broken?

Stuck at 94%, pretty certain I'm having issues with the final chapter, but can't determine what isn't counting.
Did a pretty good job at keeping up with the tracker to know it probably isn't from the 1st 3 chapters causing issues.

If anyone's having trouble triggering these. When you trigger one, stand still until it's completely finished until you continue moving. I've done this on 5 different accounts with 0 problems that way.

Stuck at 97%. Really frustrating. I definitely had 29% at the end of level 1 and 61% at the end of level 2. Just redid level 3 and 4 with a guide and no joy.

EDIT: I was missing the first missable one on level 1.. thanks.

There's one in Chapter 3 that never triggers me for. I've been following the walkthrough to a T.

Same for the urns. They don't "blow away" when they should.

What a frustrating game.

The last I was missing is incorrectly labeled as (U) Unmissable. Last one (#11) in chapter 2 I missed my first playthrough by going to the right past the cave and then back around to it from the ravine instead of straight towards the cave.

4) (U/M) Turn back , walk by the container and stick to the right to trigger this VOP. Sticking to the left as you turn back from #3 may not trigger this VOP so be very careful - 41%: Might be worth adding you go back past the container you went through, turn back around to go past it again and stick to the right, basically up the slope as far as you can go right.

It's possible to miss some of the ones on the main path if you walk too fast. New dialogue won't trigger if the current dialogue has not finished and back tracking will not trigger the missed ones. I missed 3 on chapter 2 due to this. I recommend to just stop moving whenever he starts talking until he's finished.

You can also miss the one for the house on the top of the cliff in chapter 2 before descending down the path to the beach and cave at the end.

this achievement is 100% glitched for some of us. Replayed the whole game 3 times already with all VOP's did everything this guide says but to no avail. Trash snail simulator, don't really want to subject myself to another 2 hours of boredom. Rather castrate myself at this point.

Not a guide as such, but given the linear path for the most part of the game, you will encounter the majority of the voice over points through natural progression.

A few places I found off the beaten track.

Lighthouse: Chapter 1

Near the start, you will have a path that goes up the hill, with the sea to the left. As you venture past what seems like a sudden drop that you can easily pass, the voice over point about a hermit in a cave will register as you approach a dark cave. Head through here to the very end, and you will see on the shoreline opposite, another cave with a flashing light. This is the 2 that I missed after game completion.

To get to the second cave, follow the path that the game allows you to take, and eventually you will arrive at what looks like a miniature Stonehenge. As you arrive facing it, turn to the right slightly, and head in that direction and you will easily spot the cave entrance.

Buoy: Chapter 2

As you start this chapter, you will be at a small beach with a rusted and decaying tanker. Head down the path to the left and at the end you should get another. This is out of the way from the beaten path. At least this is where I had one register.

If anyone finds another, please let me know so this (sort of) guide can help people out until a proper video guide is created.

So, it's better if you follow first the commentary version of the game, cause it somehow highlight the route you will follow during the normal gameplay,

Anyways, if you still find missing some voice-overs, please see the video below,

Here is the list of %age after end of each episode:

Chapter 1, ‘The Lighthouse’: 10 voice overs, 29% at the end of the chapter
Chapter 2, ‘The Buoy’: 11 voice overs, 61% at the end of the chapter
Chapter 3, ‘The Caves’: 4 voice overs, 70% at the end of the chapter
Chapter 4, ‘The Beacon’: 10 voice overs, 100% at the end of the chapter

NOTE: At the end, the last voice over does not count for the achievement.

To unlock this achievement, you need to trigger all 35 voice over points in the game. Start a new game and on the chapter select screen, uncheck the box next to ‘Directors’ Commentary.’ Then select the first chapter, ‘The Lighthouse.’

Unlike the directors’ commentaries, there is no on-screen icon or image telling you where the voice overs are. They are triggered by walking past a preset location in the game. Most of these you will get through your natural playthrough, but like the commentaries, you must deviate from your path to trigger them all.

While your progress is tracked with the achievement tracker, individual voice overs are not tracked, so if you happen to miss one (or more), there will really be no way to know which one it is. That is why it is recommended that before you complete each chapter to check your achievement tracker to make sure you have a certain percentage before continuing. It’s really the only way to ensure you have triggered them all in a chapter.

  1. Chapter 1, ‘The Lighthouse’: 10 voice overs, 29% at the end of the chapter
  2. Chapter 2, ‘The Buoy’: 11 voice overs, 61% at the end of the chapter
  3. Chapter 3, ‘The Caves’: 4 voice overs, 70% at the end of the chapter
  4. Chapter 4, ‘The Beacon’: 10 voice overs, 100% at the end of the chapter

NOTE: At the end of the game when you reach the top of the mountain and walk through the gate, this will trigger one last voice over that does not count for the achievement.

Once you have triggered all 35 voice overs, the achievement will unlock. If you are having any trouble finding any of them, refer to the video below.

Thanks to rus199410 for the video:

While triggering these voice over points doesn't seem to be quite as fickle as the directors commentary, I would still advise that you stop and wait for the voice over to finish before continuing. As some have reported that it doesn't count them if it doesn't finish. Here is a video guide done by rus199410:

There are a total of 36 narrator comments in the game.
They need to be activated by approaching certain invisible points.
The main thing at the beginning of the game is not to check the developer comments box! Just start playing.

Here's a good video guide.

Be careful. The trophy is given not for all the monologues of the main character, which change during repeated playthroughs of the game, but for the activation of all triggers (points on the map) where they turn on.
